  • As the immigrant population is rapidly growing in South Korea, it is important for the next generation of Korean adolescents to foster unprejudiced attitudes towards immigrants. This paper thus seeks to shed light on adolescent prejudice towards immigrants, by addressing the following three questions: (1) Does a mother's prejudice towards immigrants and parenting style influence their adolescent children's prejudice towards immigrants? (2) Does an adolescent's prejudice towards immigrants influence his/her self-identity? (3) Does an adolescent's prejudice towards immigrants influence his/her coping styles? The sample consisted of 288 pairs of Korean adolescents and their mothers. According to hierarchical regression analyses, a mother's prejudice towards immigrants significantly predicted her adolescent's prejudice towards immigrants, after taking sociodemographic variables into account, whereas her parenting style did not. In addition, having a low level of prejudice towards immigrants among adolescents predicted high levels of self-identity (e.g. independence, proprioceptive, and mission orientation), and a greater use of positive coping skills (e.g. support-seeking and problem-solving). Overall, results showed that mothers played a significant role in shaping their adolescent's prejudice towards immigrants. Results also provided evidence that prejudice towards immigrants may interfere with the healthy development of self-identity and coping style during adolescence. In conclusion, this study suggests that multicultural education for adolescents can be more effective, when it is provided in partnership with a parent education program that is designed to raise parental multicultural awareness.

  • Covering an area of about 39 ha, Qingming Shanghe Park is located in the northwest of Kaifeng, formerly the capital of seven dynasties in China. It is intended to serve as a tourist attraction based on a painting 〃Qingming Festival at Riverside〃 by Zhang Zeduan of the Northern song Dynasty, which vividly illustrates a real life on the both sides of the Bian River as well as in the urban area, Kaifeng, in early Spring. The park is a collection of varied buildings such as shops, restaurants, tea-houses, theaters, and hotels in the North song style, with an introduction of the history of Kaifeng, this paper examines design philosophy and methodology of the park, and discusses the creative design of the first stage development known as known as The South Area of the park. Marked by the Rainbow Bridge and the City Gate, the South Area is divided into three parts, the rural, suburban, and urban parts which are organized according to the spatial order showed in the painting. The South Area proves to be very successful because of its amazing sense of history and interesting folk performance. Furthermore, the preliminary 9planning of the second stage development known as The North Area is presented with references to culture, history and customs. The North Area is proposed to include the Old Sports & Games Garden, the Exhibition Garden, and the Hot Spring Garden with an appearance of the imperial gardens in the Northern Song, integrated with participation of old sports and games, display of old science & technology achievements, and enjoyment of hot spring bath.

  • The 70-story high-rise apartment on Ryomyong Street, Pyongyang was completed in just 75 days, which has raised questions about its structural safety. This study was conducted to find an answer to this question and to contribute to inter-Korean construction cooperation in the future. As a result of analyzing data from Google Earth and North Korean publicity, it could be estimated that there were no problems with the application of shallow foundations, construction speed including concrete strength and curing period, and structural safety until at least May 2022 under several conditions. This means the possibility that the North Korean style high-rise apartment construction method could be understood by South Korean standards, which could help successfully carry out the joint construction project by applying the North Korean style construction and minimizing the transfer of South Korean resources in the future.

  • The royal tombs of Baekje(백제), after the transfer of the capital to the Geumgang(riv)(금강) basin, changed to Songsanri(송산리) style(stone chamber) ${\rightarrow}$ Southern dynastic(남조) style(brick chamber) ${\rightarrow}$ Neungsanri(능산리) style(stone chamber). The most special feature of this process is the change of the ceiling structure. The ceiling had been changed from dome(Songsanri style) ${\rightarrow}$ tunnel ceiling(transition period of brick tombs and Neungsanri style) ${\rightarrow}$ a roof style(is Neungsanri style of three imitate type, trapezoid, triangle, flattened ceiling). The most special feature among this process is Neungsanri style(stone chamber), created especially in Baekje. The royal tombs of Baekje didn't lay stress on the mound, so the mound is not noticeable. It is result that they more stressed on basin of the boundary than showed off individual tomb, and this is count as an element of China Southern dynasty. Boundary of the royal tomb of Baekje, after the transfer of the capital to south, were changed from royal family's boundary to single independent's. Those are Songsanri's and Neungsanri's, these are the pair tombs(쌍릉) of Iksan(익산). That is influence of the Southern dynasty, reflect the theory of divination based on topography completely, this is influence of the China Sui(수) and the early Tang(당) dynasty's system of boundary of the royal tomb. Besides the royal tomb, they also buried a closely related person, in the boundary of the royal tomb. And facilities for memorial ceremony were existed too. An altar was equipped in Songsanri's boundary of the royal tomb, it was seen a kind of character of a sanctuary for progenitor. Neungsanri's boundary of the royal tomb were equipped with an open-aired altar that performed memorial ceremony about communal royal tombs, and also equipped a temple, was needed to pray for the happiness of the dead. This structure and arrangement are very similar to Seoakdong(서악동) of Silla(신라).

  • North Korea's continuous threats and provocative behaviors have aggravated tension on the Korean peninsula particularly with the recent nuclear weapons test. South Korea's best way to cope with this situation is to maintain the balance among three policy directions: dialogue, sanctions, and deterrence. Among the three, I argue that deterrence should be prioritized. There are different sources of deterrence such as military power, economic power, and diplomatic clouts. States can build deterrence capability independently. Alternatively, they may do so through relations with other states including alliances, bilateral relations, or multilateral relations in the international community. What South Korea needs most urgently is to maintain deterrence against North Korea's local provocations through the enhancement of independent military capability particularly by addressing the asymmetric vulnerability between militaries of the South and the North. Most of all, the South Korean government should recognize the seriousness of the negative consequences that North Korea's 'Nuclear shadow strategy' would bring about for the inter-Korea relations and security situations in Northeast Asia. Based on this understanding, it should develop an 'assertive deterrence strategy' that emphasizes 'multi-purpose, multi-stage, and tailored deterrence whose main idea lies in punitive retaliation.' This deterrence strategy requires a flexible targeting policy and a variety of retaliatory measures capable of taking out all targets in North Korea. At the same time, the force structures of the army, the air force, and the navy should be improved in a way that maximizes their deterrence capability. For example, the army should work on expanding the guided missile command and the special forces command and reforming the reserve forces. The navy and the air force should increase striking capabilities including air-to-ground, ship-to-ground, and submarine-to-ground strikes to a great extent. The marine corps can enhance its deterrence capability by changing the force structure from the stationary defense-oriented one that would have to suffer some degree of troop attrition at the early stage of hostilities to the one that focuses on 'counteroffensive landing operations.' The government should continue efforts for defense reform in order to obtain these capabilities while building the 'Korean-style triad system' that consists of advanced air, ground, and surface/ subsurface weapon systems. Besides these measures, South Korea should start to acquire a minimum level of nuclear potential within the legal boundary that the international law defines. For this, South Korea should withdraw from the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. Moreover, it should obtain the right to process and enrich uranium through changing the U.S.-South Korea nuclear cooperation treaty. Whether or not we should be armed with nuclear weapons should not be understood in terms of "all or nothing." We should consider an 'in-between' option as the Japanese case proves. With regard to the wartime OPCON transition, we need to re-consider the timing of the transition as an effort to demonstrate the costliness of North Korea's provocative behaviors. If impossible, South Korea should take measures to make the Strategic Alliance 2015 serve as a persisting deterrence system against North Korea. As the last point, all the following governments of South Korea should keep in mind that continuing reconciliatory efforts should always be pursued along with other security policies toward North Korea.

  • This study is performed to identify attribution styles of the North Korean Defectors more accurately. For this purpose, cartoon-form method designed to measure attributions is used and total 129 subjects including comparison group of South Koreans are participated in this research. Interestingly, the result showed that two groups had similar and different attribution styles at the same time. That is, there is a common aspect in using internal attributions more in general, but there is also a different aspect in that South Koreans used internal attribution much more. These tendencies emerged similarly at the controllable and uncontrollable attribution dimension. However, the results demonstrated that South Koreans mainly used stable attribution and the North Korean Defectors used unstable attribution at the stable and unstable attribution dimension. And, the attributional styles of both koreans appeared consistently in a variety of scenarios. Finally, there was the stronger relationship between North Korean defectors' life satisfaction and attributional styles.
