Background: To obtain useful safflower resources for breeding and research of functional materials, the present study was conducted to determine fatty acid compositions and antioxidant activities of 281 safflower accessions collected from East Asia including South Korea. Methods and Results: Lipid contents and fatty acids compositions were evaluated using soxhlet extraction and gas chromatography, respectively. A antioxidant activities were analyzed using a spectrophotometer. The evaluation range of safflower accessions showed very wide variation. In terms of lipid contents, the China accessions were higher than the collection from other regions, whereas antioxidant activities did not differ among regions. The result of the principal component analysis showed that the first and second principal component cumulatively explained 90.6% of the total variation. In clustering the safflower accessions, the tree showed four major clades. Group II (16 accessions) was high in lipid content, oleic acid and linoleic acid, whereas group III (50 accessions) exhibited higher antioxidant activities than other groups. Conclusions: It was recommended that the China collections be utilized as a useful resource for research on functional oil materials. These results provided valuable information for safflower breeders and researchers of functional food.
Beringraja pulchra, Cham-hong-eo in Korean, is a mottled skate which is belonging to the cartilaginous fish. Although this species is economically valuable in South Korea as an alkaline-fermented food, there are few microbial studies on such fermentation. Here, we analyzed microbial changes and pH before, during, and after fermentation and examined the effect of inoculation by a skin microbiota mixture on the skate fermentation (control vs. treatment). To analyze microbial community, the V4 regions of bacterial 16S rRNA genes from the skates were amplified, sequenced and analyzed. During the skate fermentation, pH and total number of marine bacteria increased in both groups, while microbial diversity decreased after fermentation. Pseudomonas, which was predominant in the initial skate, declined by fermentation (Day 0: 11.39 ± 5.52%; Day 20: 0.61 ± 0.9%), while the abundance of Pseudoalteromonas increased dramatically (Day 0: 1.42 ± 0.41%; Day 20: 64.92 ± 24.15%). From our co-occurrence analysis, the Pseudoalteromonas was positively correlated with Aerococcaceae (r = 0.638) and Moraxella (r = 0.474), which also increased with fermentation, and negatively correlated with Pseudomonas (r = -0.847) during fermentation. There are no critically significant differences between control and treatment. These results revealed that the alkaline fermentation of skates dramatically changed the microbiota, but the initial inoculation by a skin microbiota mixture didn't show critical changes in the final microbial community. Our results extended understanding of microbial interactions and provided the new insights of microbial changes during alkaline fermentation.
Objectives : This study has aimed to monitor microbial detection on pill types of herbal medicine which are circulating in markets including Oriental Medical Clinics(O.M.C.s) and Pharmacy in Korea. Methods : 10 different samples of O.M.Cs and 10 different samples of Pharmacy were investigated by culture method and non-culture method based on the 9th edition of microbial examination released by Korea Food & Drug Administration. Results : The total microbial count among each 10 samples were detected within the limit suggested by WHO. 2 samples of O.M.C.s and 1 samples of Pharmacy exceeded WHO's limit in fungi count. No samples exceeded WHO's limit in bacteria count. Most bacteria founded in samples were the phylum of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria which are common in soil by non-culture method. Conclusion : Further study should be followed to set up proper microbial limit of herbal materials including pill types.

In South Korea, agricultural mechanization has been carried out in paddy field, but not in the upland field during recent decades. Among crops such as root vegetables, leafy vegetables from upland field, corn is used as forage for livestock as well as food for men. The corn harvester needs to be developed to replace men's labor in rural area to follow the recent needs in the farm industry. The corn harvester is comprised of three parts such as cutting part, feeding part and pick-up part. The feeding part is so long for cut corns to be delivered from the cutting part to the pick-up part. Structurally, the load from the long moment arm is likely to be big. Thus, the setup to measure the stress on the duct of the feeding part was configured with the data acquisition system. The strain gages were attached on several points that seem to be loaded a lot comparatively. The stress was measured and the measured stresses were divided by the yield stress to get the safety factor. And then, we made sure the safety factors were above 1 on the all points. In conclusion, the feeding part of the corn harvester which convey the cut corn from the cutting part from the pick-up part can be regarded to be made safe structurally.
The purpose of this research was to investigate and analyse how Community Forest Initiatives as urban fringe management initiatives made alliances with a variety of interest groups, enrol them in the urban fringe management processes using the Actor Network Theory. The Thames Chase Community Forest Initiative was selected and its area of operation included a $97 km^2$ area of green-belt area in East London. It was a instrument far improving and protecting the unique characteristics of the countryside landscape from urban developments as well as evaluating the impact of forestry inclusion in land use planning in the urban fringe. It was operated through a tiered structure comprising the Thames Chase Joint Committee and the management team. They employed a variety of devices to speak with one voice to bring about an effective operation process and to secure the enrolment of a variety of interest groups in its operational processes. Of note, the initiative's actor network impacted on improvement to and management of the countryside landscape despite not owning any land itself. As a result, when urban fringe management initiatives will be launched in South Korea to achieve a more effective and efficient urban fringe management, local councillors and representatives from public and non-government bodies should be more responsive to local communities' views and needs and work more vigorously on their behalf through lobbying, seeking media support, and so on. Moreover, better understanding and communication between local authorities' officers and management initiatives' teams are essential to avoid duplication of work practice.

These days abattoirs' hygiene of Korea is regulated by Hazzard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP). Although 20 years have been left since first HACCP was adjusted in Korea, 12% of abattoirs got inconsistence on evaluations. Food poisoning caused by bacteria feces like pathogenic Escherichia coli and Salmonella has not decreased. These bacteria on meat cross-contaminate at the abattoir. Therefore, field verification of abattoir's critical control point (CCP) and experiments to find alternative ways of the CCP were conducted. The aerobic bacteria were measured before and after high-pressure water based washing process set as CCP in most abattoirs. Four parts of cattle carcasses were selected to apply sponge-swab method. The effects were < 1 log reduction which is not significant. Lactic acid (LC), chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW) were used to measure the effect of reducing bacteria on beef by the different time. LC has 1.24-2.02 log reduction for aerobic bacteria. ClO2 has 1.44-1.96 log reduction for aerobic bacteria. SAEW has 1.1-1.91 log reduction for aerobic bacteria. There was significant difference according to concentrations (p < 0.05). This study presents legitimacy for hygiene improvement of CCP by field verification. In addition, chemical disinfectants that can be mechanically applied have better reduction effects of high-pressure washing.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to check the obesity of middle and high school students in the nation and identify factors influencing their obesity. Methods: The present study is a secondary analysis research that obtained permission to use the primitive data of 10th (2014) Online Survey on Adolescents' Health Behaviors by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and analyzed the primitive data according to the purposes. Results: The findings show that the BMI of middle and high school students in the nation was $20.7kg/m^2$ with the obesity and non-obesity group recording $27.0kg/m^2$ and $19.9kg/m^2$, respectively. Factors influencing the obesity of adolescents include gender, grade, educational background of parent, school grades for the last 12 months, satisfaction with sleep, fast food consumption, ramen consumption, intense and muscle exercise three times a week or more, subjective sense of health, stress, suicidal ideation, and hours of Internet usage per week. Conclusion: For the management of adolescent obesity, there is a need for obesity management programs taking the characteristics of male students into consideration. The possibilities of obesity grow according to the grades, which means that both the teachers and parents should offer more guidance on weight control in upper grades. The adjustment of adolescent obesity requires psychological health management including stress and suicidal ideation as well as diet control and exercise. It is also needed to apply a stepwise obesity management program according to the hours of internet usage and dependence on the internet
Purpose: This study aims to propose a method for fast geographical origin discrimination between domestic and imported rice using a visible/near-infrared (VNIR) hyperspectral imaging technique. Methods: Hyperspectral reflectance images of South Korean and Chinese rice samples were obtained in the range of 400 nm to 1000 nm. Partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) models were developed and applied to the acquired images to determine the geographical origin of the rice samples. Results: The optimal pixel dimensions and spectral pretreatment conditions for the hyperspectral images were identified to improve the discrimination accuracy. The results revealed that the highest accuracy was achieved when the hyperspectral image's pixel dimension was $3.0mm{\times}3.0mm$. Furthermore, the geographical origin discrimination models achieved a discrimination accuracy of over 99.99% upon application of a first-order derivative, second-order derivative, maximum normalization, or baseline pretreatment. Conclusions: The results demonstrated that the VNIR hyperspectral imaging technique can be used to discriminate geographical origins of rice.
To evaluate the detection rate and the density of Vibrio vulnificus by the sample, sampling area and date, 240 sea water samples and marine invertebrates were collected from coastal area of Korea including Pohang, Chungmu, Yeosu, Kunsan, Sihwa and Pusan from March to October, 1986. Eighty two strains oft of 1087 strains isolated from the submitted samples were identified as V. vulnificus. Forty seven of total 240 samples were positive in V. vulnificus which were constituted by 31 out of 138 sea water samples and 16 out of 102 marine invertebrates. Detection rate of V. vulnificus among the invertebrates was high in the crab, Portunus trituberculatus and the ark shell, Anadara broughtonii samples. The samples collected at Kunsan area showed the highest in detection rate of the bacterium as $67\%$ during the study period and the density of V. vulnificus was high in the sea water which was low in salinity.

Marine bacteria inhibiting the growth of the diatom, Chaetoceros calcitrans were screened from seawater samples collected at south coast of Korea in 1996. Six strains were isolated from those samples. Among them, a bacterium SR-14 strain had the strongest inhibition activity against the alga. The selected SR-14 strain was identified as an Alteromonas sp. (supposed to be Alteromonas colwelliana) according to its biochemical results. Alteromonas sp. SR-14 was able to grow in raw seawater, aged seawater, Conwy medium for culture of microalgae and C. calcitrans culture filtrate. The host ranges of Alteromonas sp. SR-14 were C. calcitrans, C. muclleri and C. negracile among 10 species of diatom. All of the Chaetoceros spp. tested were inhibited by the Alteromonas sp. SR-14, However, the growth of the other genera in Bacillariophyceae was not inhibited.
