This study aimed to propose the necessity and system establishment of noise reduction facility via evaluating noise level exposed by the radiographer due to MRI scan. Noise measurements were carried out using at S general hospital in Daejeon using 1.5 Tesla MRI (7 exams) and 3.0 Tesla MRI (16 exams), while using SC-804 noise meter. The measurement distance was from the soundproof door of the MRI room to the radiographer which measured 100cm, and the measurement height, the height to the radiographer's ears when working, 100cm. The noise measured for each exam was an average of three measures per exam which observed the noise occurring in each sequence recorded every 20 seconds. As the results, the maximum of noise exposed by the radiographer is 73.3 dB(A), which is MRCP by the 3.0 Tesla device, and also the maximum of average noise is 66.9(3.1) dB(A), which is Myelogram by the 3.0 Tesla device. Average noise by each device is 61.9(4.1) dB(A) by the 3.0 Tesla device and 52.0(3.1) dB(A) by the 1.5 Tesla device, which comes to the result that the 3.0 Tesla MRI device is about 10 dB(A) degree higher(p <0.001). The noise level exposed by the radiographer does not affect auditory acuity, but the level is able to incur a non auditory effect. The reflect sound can be removed by installing curtains in the rear wall of MRI control room in order to reduce the noises, but, first of all, An institutional system is needed in order to prevent noise.

Because the puretone audiometer is an important medical instrument used to diagnose hearing loss, the IEC and ANSI has been published a specification with which audiometer should comply. This paper describes development of Linux based real-time spectrum analyzer which is dedicated to puretone audiometer. It can measure not only hearing level but also compliance of IEC standard for puretone audiometer such as frequency accuracy, harmonic distortion, pulsed tone, narrow band noise and linearity. We have verified our real-time spectrum analyzer through comparing to commercial product.

Dental professionals are exposed to various occupational risks, among which the problem of hearing damage has been newly revealed. There have been some researches reporting that noise occurring in a dental office exceeds the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) Standards. Especially, the pediatric dentists are repeatedly exposed to an additional noise source called the crying sound of children in addition to all kinds of noises from dental instruments. Accordingly, this study intended to investigate the noise environment likely to affect pediatric dentists and to examine the possibility of resultant hearing damages. The level of noise was measured respectively, when various dental instruments (ultrasonic scaler, high-speed handpiece, low-speed handpiece) are operated, when children are crying, and when both occasions take place simultaneously (from the distance of 30 cm) with a portable noise meter. And the daily duration of pediatric dentists exposed to the noise environment was surveyed. The results were compared with the standard value of noise threshold of NIOSH, OSHA, and that of hearing damage of CRA News letter respectively. Considering the intensity and exposure time, the noise environment of pediatric dentists exceeds the allowable noise threshold values. Even only one exposure to crying child was likely to lead to permanent hearing damage. Comparatively, pediatric dentists have a higher risk for occupational hearing damages, and some active measures are thought highly desirable to minimize it.

A pure tone audiometer should be able to produce both pure tone and masking noise with exact sound pressure level and frequency. For such purpose, it is unavoidable to periodically calibrates pure tone audiometer. However, manual acoustic calibration requires not only attention but also long time. It is possible to execute automatically calibration using software if it is PC-based pure tone audiometer. In this paper, we describe auto-calibration software for PC-based pure tone audiometer and dedicated sound level meter which has been implemented upon PC by us. To verify auto-calibration module, we examine whether output of PC-based audiometer calibrated through auto-calibration of this paper satisfies RETSPL of IEC or not.
The environment in the ICU leads to negative changes in a patient's usual sleep pattern and so contributes negatively to the patient's health condition as compared to patients in general wards. Therefore, it is thought that an important nursing intervention would be to identify the relation between noise and sleep patterns which play an important role in illness recovery. The purpose of the present study was to explore the relationship between noise in the ICU and the sleep pattern of patients admitted to the ICU. A descriptive correlation design was used to examine the relationship. Thirty-four subjects were recruited from a Medical ICU (MICU), Surgical ICU (SICU) and Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at a large university hospital in Suwon. Data were collected from September 28 to October 31 in 1999. In the present study, noise was categorized into noise level and patients' perception of noise. The objective noise level was measured using the A-Weighted Sound Level Meter. The patients' preception of noise was measured using a self-reported questionnaire developed by the researcher. Sleep patterns in this study includes both quantity and quality of sleep. These were measured using open ended questionnaires and the 'Korean Sleep Scale A' developed by Oh, Song, Kim(1998). The data was analyzed using the SPSS-WIN to test the research question, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was run. Ancillary analysis were conducted with demographic variables to determine their relation to the main study variables. For the ancillary analysis, t-test and one-way ANOVAs were performed. The results of the present study are summerized as follows : 1. The total mean of objective noise level (10pm-6am) was 56.2dB. The means for night time noise level in individual ICUs for the SICU, MICU and CCU, were 58.7dB, 58.6dB and 48.3dB, respectively. The total mean for patients' noise perception was 42.8 out of a maximum possible score of 76. For item means of noise perception, the one ranked highest was "conversations between doctors and nurses" (3.2). The one ranked lowest was "noise from the radio" (1.2). Regarding the degree of perception for each type of noise source, the one ranked highest was "equipment noise" (2.6), the second was "conversation between medical staff" (2.4), the third was "conversation between patients, caregivers and visitors" (2.3), and the one ranked lowest was "environment noise" (1.8). 2. Looking at quantity of sleep of ICU patients, the mean nocturnal sleep time was found to be 4.9 hours. The total mean of sleep quality for ICU patients was 21.0 out of a maximum possible score of 40. 3. The relationship between perception of noise and quantity of sleep was statistically significant(r= - .41, p<.05). The relationship between perception of noise and quality of sleep was also statistically significant(r= - .47, p<.01). The results of the study indicate that personal perception of noise is related to sleep patterns. Therefore, it is suggested that nursing interventions be developed to reduce the degree of personal perception of noise and, thus, decrease sleep pattern disturbances in patients in the ICU.

A water balance analysis was performed for a paddy field neighboring the Dongchang stream, downstream of the Unmun reservoir, which is constructed for the urban water supply. Daily rainfall data were collected and irrigation water flow rate, drainage flow rate, evaportranspiration, infiltration, and piezometeric head were measured in the field. The flow rates were continuously observed by water level logger during the growing season. The evaportranspiration and the infiltration were measured by N-type depletion meter and cylindrical infiltrometer, respectively. PVC pipes with 12mm diameter were used for piezometric head measurement. Total Irrigation and drainage flows were 3,608mm and 1,170mm in 1999, and 3,971mm and 1,548mm in 2000, respectively. The mean and range of the daily infiltration rate were 4.4mm/d and 3.4mm/d to 5.5mm/d in 1999 and 5.1mm/d and 4.1mm/d to 6.5mm/d in 2000, respectively. The net ground water flow including the change of soil water storage was 2,855mm in 1999 and 2,540mm in 2000. The evapotranspiration was 458.3mm in 1999 and 553.5mm in 2000. The range of daily evapotranspiration rate was from 1.6 to 8.7mm/d. The return flow ratio was about 32% in 1999 and 39% in 2000 and three year average was 35% including previous study in 1997. The amount of irrigation water was much higher than design standards or references in this study, This was caused by the inadequate water management practice in the area where water was oversupplied on farmers’ request rather than following sound water management principles.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate if the 7-item Berg balance scale (BBS) 3-point, which is a short form of the BBS (SFBBS), has compatible psychometric properties in comparison with the original BBS, and also to study the concurrent validity using a 10-meter walk test (10mWT) and a timed up and go test (TUG), which are widely used with SFBBS in clinical settings. Methods: A total of 255 patients who had experienced stroke participated in this cross-sectional study. We used results obtained from 188 patients who completed both 10mWT and TUG. The three levels in the center of the BBS were collapsed to a single level (i.e.,0-2-4) to form the SFBBS. The concurrent validity was assessed by computing the Spearman coefficients for correlation among outcome measures and in between each outcome measure and the SFBBS. As there were four outcomes, the corrected p-value for significant correlation was 0.013 (0.05/4). Results: Spearman coefficients for correlations and evaluation instruments for concurrent validity revealed significantly high validity for both of SFBBS and BBS (r=0.944). 10mWT and TUG were -0.749 and -0.770 respectively, which are in the high margin and are statistically significant (p>0.000). Conclusion: SFBBS has sound psychometric properties for evaluating patients with stroke. Thus, we recommend the use of SFBBS in both clinical and research settings.

The Dangri Crushed Stone Quarry is located in Dangridong, Busan City, and around the estuary of the Nagdong River. The quarry is considered to be a very promised one in the urban area from the standpoints of the assessment of the aggregate rank, the environmental impacts and the transportation distance. The crushed stones for aggregate of the quarry marks the higher rank in the gravity, the absorption ratio, the abrasion ratio, and the stability in comparison with the JISA 5005. The basement vibrations of the residential section in the vicinity of the quarry, which are arised by the millisecond blasting at the quarry site using the gelatin dynamites less than 39kg in weight, are measured to assess the vibration nuisance. The values of acceleration and the magnitudes are less than eight gals and O on the Richter scale respectively, the vibration nuisance thus can be ignored in such scales of the experiments. The traffic vibrations of the residential section are slightly susceptible. In the experiments, the traffic vibrations appears to be sensibler to the basement than the explosion vibration. The explosion noises in the experiments are not checked not only on the RION Sound Level Meter but also to our ears. The values of traffic noises also are in the safety values of the noise nuisance. The crush dust suspends in the air toward the upper valley in the opposite side of the residential area because of the influences of the sea breeze and the valley wind in the daytime, and the monsoon and the topographic disposition. the dust nuisance thus would not be remained in problem. The quarry is operated in the daytime only. The traffic dust in the residential area will be reduced by the faultless pavement and the careful driving. The elaborate survey on the ridges and peaks surrounded the quarry is recommended to prevent in advance the accidents of the rock slide. Moreover, it is required to make an advisory committee to develop the industry and to save the techniques. The most important matter is the accomodation between the attitude of the enterprising man for the social responsibility to the public nuisance and the cooperative spirit of the inhabitants for the industry.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of action observational training with acoustic stimulation (AOTA) on the balance and gait ability in stroke patients. METHODS: Forty-five chronic stroke patients were divided into three groups. The AOTA group (n = 15) received training via a video that showed a normal gait with the sound of footsteps. The action observation training (AOT) group (n = 15) received AOT without acoustic stimulation. The control group (n = 15) received physical training. Each intervention was applied once per day, three times per week for six weeks. The participants in the AOTA and AOT groups had five minutes of AOT. The participants in the all group had 20 minutes of physical training. All participants were measured using the Berg Balance Scale, the Timed Up and Go Test, the Functional Reaching Test, 10 Meter Walk Test, six Minute Walk Test, and Dynamic Gait Index. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 for Windows. The between- and within-group comparisons were analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test and a paired t-test, respectively. For all statistical analyses, the significance level was set to .05. RESULTS: The one-way ANOVA test identified significant differences among the measurement results of the three groups (p < .05). Post hoc analyses indicated the AOTA group to undergo more significant balance and gait changes than the control group (p < .05). CONCLUSION: The gait and balance abilities could be improved effectively for patients with stroke when action observation training and acoustic stimulation were applied simultaneously.

This paper describes on the distribution of the vibration and the noise produced on a skipjack pole and line training ship M/S Pusan 403 (243GT, 1,000ps) under the cruising or drifting condition. The vibration and the noise level were measured by use of protable vibration analyzer (B and K 3513) and sound level meter (B and K 2205), and so the vibration level was converted into dB unit. The check points were set through every decks and around important places of the ship. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The vibration and the noise level 1) On the main deck, both the vibration and the noise level were highest at the vertically above the main engine, whereas the vibration level was the lowest in the bow store and the noise level beneath the bridge. 2) Under cruising condition, the vibration level around the cylinder head of main engine, port side of the engine room, on the shaft tunnel was 80, 67, 65 dB and the noise level 104, 87, 86 dB, respectively. 3) The vibration level on the vertical line passing through the bridge was the highest at the orlop deck with 60 dB and the lowest on the bridge deck with 55 dB, whereas the noise level the highest at the compass deck with 75 dB and the lowest at the orlop deck with 53 dB. 4) The vibration and the noise level on the open decks were the highest with 65 dB and 84 dB on the boat deck, whereas the vibration level was the lowest at the lecture room with 51 dB and the noise level the lowest at the fore castle deck with 57 dB. 5) On the orlop decks, both the vibration and the noise level were the highest at the engine room with 65 dB and 85 dB, and the lowest at bow store with 54 dB and 52 dB, respectively. Comparing with the vibration level and the noise level, the vibration level was higher than the noise level in the bow part and it was contrary in the stern part of the ship. 2. Vibration analysis 1) The vibration displacement and the vibration velocity were the greatest at the cylinder head of main engine with 100μm and 11mm/sec, and were the smallest at the compass deck with 3μm and 0.07mm/sec. They were also attenuated rapidly around the frequency of 100Hz and over. 2) The vibration acceleration was the greatest at the cylinder head with the main frequency of 1KHz and the acceleration of 1.1mm/sec super(2), and the smallest at the compass deck with 30KHz and 0.05mm/sec super(2).
