An Experimental Study on the Optimistic Recognition Level of Public Address System as a Soundscape Application Facility (사운드스케이프 적용을 위한 옥외 P.A. 시스템의 적정 인지레벨에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • P.A.(public address) system is considered as an useful active soundscape appliance which can gives a place identity and vitality by introducing conventional musics, environmental musics, bird singing sounds etc. In this study, the main aim is to know the optimistic distance from the speaker and sound pressure level range of introducing sound. So, the sound pressure level of P.A. system due to distances were measured and subjects' responses with level variations were checked. The main results are as follows. Level range from 64 dB to 71 dB is comfortable for subjects. And the optimal level of introducing sound is related with sound source characteristics. The results of this study could be used for street furniture location design and P.A. system output level.

  • Floor impact sound level is affected by various factors. This study was examined about impact sources and floor coverings influenced at floor impact sound. So this study wishes to get method to reduce sound pressure level of receiving room. Light-weight impact sound in mid frequency and Heavy-weight impact sound in low frequency was affected by floor coverings. Therefore, method to reduce floor impact sound level is to use proper floor coverings. Some coverings can amplify the heavy-weight impact sound in low frequency. Floor impact sound sources used measurement and analysis were standard heavy-impact source(Tapping, Bang, Ball) and living impact sources(Cleaner, Chair, Toy-car, Soccer ball). And Floor coverings used measurements were various thickness vinyl, laminate(or ply-wood) floor. Especially vinyl floor coverings were very effective method to reduce floor impact.

An Study on the Sound Attenuation of Audible Fire Alarm Device in Apartment Buildings (공동주택에서의 화재 경보음 전달특성에 관한 연구)

  • In many fire emergencies, the auditory fire alarm signals are very important to save the occupant's life. But as the sound insulation of building elements has been improved, it is more difficult for occupant to recognize the fire alarm signals when the audible fire alarm worked. This is the first study to show the sound attenuation of audible fire alarm device in apartments. We measured and analyzed the sound attenuation level in seven units. The result showed that it was not sufficient to detect the sound from the fire alarm device in bedrooms. Whether the fire alarm device worked or not, the differences of sound level in bedrooms were below 1$\sim$10dBA. To give the minimum sound level 60dBA in bedrooms, the proper sound levels from alarm device installed in livingrooms were suggested using computer simulation.

  • As a active soundscape facility, P.A. system is a useful instrument to give place identity and vitality by letting out music, environmental music, bird singing sound etc. In this study, to know the optimistic distance and sound level range of introducing sound, sound levels due to distance were measured and subject responses were checked by questionnaire. Levels from 64dB to 71dB are recommended by subjects. And the optimistic level of introducing level is related with level variance of sound source. The results of this study could used for street furniture location design and P.A. system output level.

  • Booming sound is one of the most important interior sound of a passenger car. The conventional booming noise research was focused on the reduction of the A-weighted sound pressure level. However A-weighted sound pressure level can not give the whole story about the booming sound of a passenger car.   • This study performed an physical analysis on the characteristics of urban environmental sound divided into three parts depending on their features. Object sounds were classified into traffic sound, waster sound and spatial sound. Traffice sound was selected because it is dominant sound in urban environment, and water sound is selected because it generally supplies pleasantness in contrast to traffic sound, Finally spatial sound was considered because it represents sound in various places of city having lots of behaviors and types of sound due to them. Physcal analysis was carried out using sound quality indices based on Zwicker's loudness, $L_{Aeq}$(equivalent noise level), Ln(percentile noise level) and other acoutical attributes applied to previous study. Through the analysis, this study aims to compare the acoustical characteristics of urban environmental sound and to provide fundamental data for the evaluation of urban environmental sound.

  • As the economy has grown and the main industry in Korea has been changed from secondary industry to tertiary industry, the importance of indoor environment has been a matter of common concern, in which one of the main concerns is to improve the indoor acoustic conditions. However, even though this is required more than before, there are no measures to protect the human being from the noise of electric home appliances. This is owing to the absence of the data about sound power level of electric home appliances. So, we investigate the sound power level of them and analyze the acoustical characteristics of each one. First, we tried to investigate the sound power measurement method of each electric home appliance. After it we test the sound power level of them. From the survey, we can know that the vacuum cleaner is the most noisy electric home appliance, and the refrigerator is the least noisy one. This results will help us predict the indoor noise level using the basic data of sound power level.

  • It is very difficult to reduce traffic noise level in the downtown. The best method is to improve the sound amenity of the districts, considering concept of soundscape. ?his study aims to survey the effect of introducing sound and masking to reduce the background noise level. We carried out the evaluating test for 18 introducing sounds varied S/N ratio(-5, 0, +5) in the city riverside. In these test, subjects evaluated the sound environment with five bipolar adjective scales. It was evaluated that introducing sounds improved the sound environment and that S/N + 5dB was very appropriate to mask the background noise. But the hearing level was suggested to be S/N 0 dB or less.

Interior noise prediction of the high speed train using ray method (광음향기법을 이용한 한국형 고속전철의 실내소음 예측)

  • This study is about predicting the interior pressure level of the korean high speed train using ray acoustic method. The motor car and the motor and passenger cabin are investigated under the environment of passing open countryside and inside tunnel of 350 km/hr. Calculated sound levels are compared with the proposed sound levels and suggestions about the transmission Joss values of isolating panels inside motor car and the guide lines of allowed sound power limit of motor equipments are provided. Results of TPI car show calculated interior sound level is below the proposed values for both cases of open countryside running and inside tunnel. Since ray acoustic method calculated only air borne noise component, real sound level of the motor car may be higher than prediction. Passenger cabins of TMI, TM5 show higher sound level than the proposed values, so window method was carried out to find the contribution of each panel components and point out the remedy of transmission path. Reduction of sound power of motor equipments should be condisered at the same time.

Assessment of traffic-induced low frequency sound radiated from a viaduct by field experiment

  • This study is intended to assess low frequency sound radiated from a viaduct under normal traffic. The bridge comprises steel box girders and wide cantilever decks on which vehicles pass. The low frequency sound and the acceleration response of the bridge under normal traffic are measured to investigate how bridge vibrations affect the low frequency sound observed near the bridge. Observations demonstrate that strong relationships exist between frequency characteristic of bridge's acceleration response and the sound pressure level of low frequency sound. A noteworthy point is that the dynamic feature of the sound pressure level is mostly affected by dynamic feature of the span locating near the observation point.
