  • With the development of display engineering and technology, the screen and sound quality of information devices such as TVs are improving. The screen used LEDs via LCD and PDP and a large flat panel in the early CRT to create super-high resolution. The sound is improved by directly vibrating a thin and simple panel, such as an OLED. In our previous study, the exciter speaker was attached to the rear of the OLED panel to be used as the diaphragm of the speaker, and the sound quality was as good as that of the TV using the existing dynamic speaker. This method supplied the viewer with the direct sound coming from the panel, delivering clear sound, and the sound and image came from the same location, thus giving the viewer high immersion and maximizing the effect of information transfer. OLED exciter speakers, however, have a special directivity, which tends to slightly attenuate the tone at the very center of the screen. This study improves the sound quality by improving the structure of the exciter speaker and the radiated sound of the flat panel display. A 2-in-1 Exciter is made into a single core to improve the speaker's radiation pattern.

  • The examination needle used in ultrasound biopsy is a medical device used to determine whether there is an abnormality in the tissue. Typically, stainless steel is the standard material used for such needles; however, this study wanted to identify a material that could better enhance sound compared to traditional stainless steel. In this study, six types of needle materials available with the biopsy gun were inserted into pork and ultrasound images according to the curved probe and linear probe were evaluated using ultrasound equipment. The findings revealed significant improvements in ultrasound acoustic enhancement with alternative materials compared to stainless steel (p<0.05). The results regarding the depth of each ultrasound image using the curved probe showed that tungsten and brass had high sound enhancement(p<0.05), while with the linear probe, sound enhancement was high in brass, pla, aluminum, and copper(p<0.05). Due to these results, the previously used stainless needle showed lower ultrasound acoustic enhancement than the five types of materials being compared. Consequently, the outcomes of this study provide valuable insights for the development of new needle technologies aimed at minimizing patient risks and improving diagnostic accuracy.

  • In this paper, we proposed the single-channel adaptive noise canceller for the enhancement of heart sound (HS) in the auscultation signal. In case of either normal or emergency, a HS diagnosis is difficult due to the various signal source in the chest. Therefore, the HS enhancement is necessary. The conventional active noise canceller(ANC) has two channel, main signal and reference signal. For signal channel, the reference signal in ANC was generated by the proposed HS analyser and BS-Gate based on the characteristic of HS. This reference signal is suitable to the ANC condition. Experimental data were acquisited from MP36, SS30L in BIOPAC Inc., By the experiment, we confirmed that the proposed single-channel ANC was efficient for HS enhancement. And by the comparison with active linear enhancement, it was validate that the proposed ANC is not affected by the variation of a heartbeat.

  • The sound collected through the multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) includes the ego noise generated by the motor or propeller, or the wind noise generated during the flight, and thus the quality is greatly impaired. In a multi-rotor UAV environment, both the magnitude and phase of the target sound are greatly corrupted, so it is necessary to enhance the sound in consideration of both the magnitude and phase. However, it is difficult to improve the phase because it does not show the structural characteristics. in this study, we propose a CNN-based complex spectrogram enhancement method that removes noise based on complex spectrogram that can represent both magnitude and phase. Experimental results reveal that the proposed method improves enhancement performance by considering both the magnitude and phase of the complex spectrogram.

  • There are various sounds in the car as much as cars have many mechanical parts. These sounds make various psychological development. The international competition in car markets has continuously required the research about the sound quality of a car. The domestic car makers have also invested a lot of money for the research and development of sound quality. Car axle plays an important role in a vehicle and its NVH development is also important. By this time, NVH development of car axle is mainly based on the reduction of sound pressure level (dBA), which cannot gives, the satisfaction to the customers in view of the sound quality of a vehicle. Therefore, in this paper, a sound quality index evaluating the sound quality of axle noise based on human sensibility is developed.

  • Three-dimensional(3-D) sound is a technique for generating or recreating sounds so they are perceived as emanating from locations in a three-dimensional space. Three dimensional sound has the potential of increasing the feeling of realism in music or movie soundtracks. Three-dimensional sound effects depend on psychoacoustic spectral and phase cues being presented in a reproduced signal. In this paper we propose an effective algorithm for the sound image expansion in television system using stereo image enhancement techniques. Compared to the other techniques of three-dimensional sound, the proposed algorithm use only two speakers to enhance the sound image expansion, while maintaining the original sound characteristics.

  • The human voice is a convenient method of information transfer between different objects such as between men, men and machine, between machines. The development of information and communication technology, the voice has been able to transfer farther than before. The way to communicate, it is to convert the voice to another form, transmit it, and then reconvert it back to sound. In such a communication process, a vocoder is a method of converting and re-converting a voice and sound. The CELP (Code-Excited Linear Prediction) type vocoder, one of the voice codecs, is adapted as a standard codec since it provides high quality sound even though its transmission speed is relatively low. The EVRC (Enhanced Variable Rate CODEC) and QCELP (Qualcomm Code-Excited Linear Prediction), variable bit rate vocoders, are used for mobile phones in 3G environment. For the real-time implementation of a vocoder, the reduction of sound quality is a typical problem. To improve the sound quality, that is important to know the size and shape of noise. In the existing sound quality improvement method, the voice activated is detected or used, or statistical methods are used by the large mount of data. However, there is a disadvantage in that no noise can be detected, when there is a continuous signal or when a change in noise is large. This paper focused on finding a better way to decrease the reduction of sound quality in lower bit transmission environments. Based on simulation results, this study proposed a preprocessor application that estimates the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) using the spectral SNR estimation method. The SNR estimation method adopted the IMBE (Improved Multi-Band Excitation) instead of using the SNR, which is a continuous speech signal. Finally, this application improves the quality of the vocoder by enhancing sound quality adaptively.

  • This study aims to provide fundamental data for enhancing the sound insulation performance of windows. For this study, windows composed of various types and thicknesses, were classified into five categories; fixed, single, double, triple and airtight, and then tested. In order to analyze their sound insulation characteristics and performances. test results were rated using methods such as D, STC, Ts and arithmetical mean. It was found that the sound insulation performance of windows is affected due to their type rather than the thickness of the glass. It was also found that when gap between the inner and outer frames was filled with caulking material, the sound transmission loss at high frequency bands was greatly improved. Therefore, the sound insulation performance of windows would be enhanced by minimizing the gap between frames.

  • In this study, a design method for the flat sound radiator is developed to make new sound radiator system, whose shape is much thinner than that of conventional loudspeaker. Piezofilm (PVDF) is used as actuators of flat sound radiator. To avoid the distortion of sound radiated from flat sound radiator, the frequency response of radiated sound to be flat is taken as the design objective. The electrode pattern and orientation angle of piezofilm actuator is optimized to satisfy the design objective. The formulation is based on the coupled finite element and boundary element method. Genetic algorithm is used in the optimization process, which is useful in the optimization of discrete design variables. Frequency response with optimized piezofilm actuator is made flat enough to satify the design objective. For the enhancement of sound power, double-layered piezofilm actuators are also considered. The sound power with double-layered actuator becomes larger than that with single-layered actuator as expected.

  • The present study aims to investigate the effects of sound diffusers and absorbers on the sound clarity in classrooms. In order to do this, computer simulations were carried out to find the effective area of treatment which could enhance the sound clarity in the room. Acoustic measurements were undertaken in a lecture room with several conditions changing the surface of walls and ceilings with diffusers and absorbers. Diffusion and absorption treatments were applied to the side walls, rear wall and the ceiling of the classroom. SPL, RT, D50, RASTI were measured at 9 measurement points with one sound source and MLS was used as the sound source signal. The results show that higher sound clarity was obtained when diffusers were applied to rear walls and ceiling rather than side walls. Also, it was confirmed that absorption increased sound clarity more effectively with smaller amount in comparison with diffusers. It was also concluded that the effects of sound diffusers and absorbers on the sound clarity could be obtained distinctly at the rear area of the classroom.
