  • In this paper, we propose an approach to improve the performance of voiced/unvoiced (V/UV) decision under background noise environments for the selectable mode vocoder (SMV) of 3GPP2. We first present an effective analysis of the features and the classification method adopted in the SMV. And then feature vectors which are applied to the GMM are selected from relevant parameters of the SMV for the efficient voiced/unvoiced classification. For the purpose of evaluating the performance of the proposed algorithm, different experiments were carried out under various noise environments and yields better results compared with the conventional scheme of the SMV.

  • This paper presents the design, fabrication and performance of a reinforced concrete beam strengthened by GFRP box plate and its possibility for structural rehabilitations. The load capacity, ductility and failure mode of reinforced concrete structures strengthened by FRP box plate were investigated and compared with traditional FRP plate strengthening method. This is intended to assess the feasibility of using FRP box plate for repair and strengthening of damaged RC beams. A series of four-point bending tests were conducted on RC beams with or without strengthening FRP systems the influence of concrete cover thickness on the performance of overall stiffness of the structure. The parameters obtained by the experimental studies were the stiffness, strength, crack width and pattern, failure mode, respectively. The test yielded complete load-deflection curves from which the increase in load capacity and the failure mode was evaluated.

  • Since most autonomous mobile robots are powered by a battery, it is important to increase the continuous operating time without recharging. This can be achieved by improving the energy efficiency of a mobile robot, but little research on energy efficiency has been performed. This paper proposes two methods for improving the energy efficiency of an omnidirectional mobile robot.. One method is to realize a continuously variable transmission (CVT) by adopting the mechanism of steerable omnidirectional wheels. The other is the proposed steering algorithm in which wheel arrangement of the mobile robot is continuously adjusted so as to obtain the maximum energy efficiency of the motors during navigation. In addition, new omnidirectional wheels which can be transformed to the conventional wheels depending on the driving conditions are proposed to compensate for less efficient omnidirectional drive mode. Various tests show that motion control of the OMR-SOW works satisfactorily and the proposed steering algorithm for CVT can provide higher energy efficiency than the algorithm using a fixed steering angle. In addition, it is shown that the differential drive mode can give better energy efficiency than the omnidirectional drive mode.

  • Controller for doubly-fed induction-type wind generation system should be designed with mechanical power on blade. The controller in this paper consists of upper level controller and lower level controller. The upper level controller determines operating modes according to mechanical input power and calculates proper reference values. There are 4 operating modes - minimum speed control, variable torque control, torque limit control and idle mode. The lower level controller performs current regulated PWM control of rotor-side converter and grid-side inverter. A wind turbine simulator is implemented using doubly-fed induction-type generator and DSP based back-to-back converter to verify the performance of designed controller experimentally.

  • Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technique method using a resonance frequency mode was carried out for heat-treated wood under different conditions. The effect of heat treatment on the bending strength and NDE technique using the resonance frequency by impact hammer and force transducer mode for Korean paulownia, Pinus densiflora, Lidiodendron tulipifera and Betula costata were measured. The heat treatment temperature has been investigated at $175^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$, respectively. There were a close relationship of dynamic modulus of elasticity and static bending modulus of elasticity to MOR. In all conditions, It was found that there were a high correlation at 1% level between dynamic modulus of elasticity and MOR, and static modulus of elasticity and MOR. However, the result indicated that correlation coefficient is higher in dynamic modulus of elasticity to MOR than that in static modulus of elasticity to MOR. Therefore, the dynamic modulus of elasticity using resonance frequency by impact hammer mode is more useful as a nondestructive evaluation method for predicting the MOR of heat-treated wood under different temperature and species conditions.

  • In this paper, we will discuss the absolute angular error control mode for the Gun/Turret driving system. The Gun/Turret driving controller receives absolute angular error calculated from the fire control system (FCS). Thus, the Gun/Turret driving controller is subjected to step command to cause residual vibration and system unstable. In order to reduce residual vibration and to ensure the system stability, we propose an error motion profile method with two types of trapezoidal and S-Curve. The validity of the proposed error motion profile method is confirmed via simulation by observing that the resulting position error, driving power, and power density satisfied the control performance.

  • Small-scale shear flows are ubiquitous in the universe, and astrophysical plasmas are often magnetized. We study the thermal condensation instability in magnetized plasmas with shear flows in relation to filamentary structure formation in cool structures in the universe, representatively solar prominences and supernova remnants. A linear stability analysis is extensively performed in the framework of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with radiative cooling, plasma heating and anisotropic thermal conduction to find the eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions for the unstable modes. For a shear velocity less than the Alfven velocity of the background plasma, the eigenvalue with the maximum growth rate is found to correspond to a thermal condensation mode, for which the density and temperature variations are anti-phased (of opposite signs). Only when the shear velocity in the k-direction is near zero, the eigenfunctions for the condensation mode are of smooth sinusoidal forms. Otherwise each eigenfunction for density and temperature is singular and of a discrete form like delta functions. Our results indicate that any non-uniform velocity field with a magnitude larger than a millionth of the Alfven velocity can generate discrete eigenfunctions of the condensation mode. We therefore suggest that condensation at discrete layers or threads should be quite a natural and universal process whenever a thermal instability arises in magnetized plasmas.

  • This paper presents a RLS based adaptive sliding mode observer (A-SMO) for unknown fault reconstruction in longitudinal autonomous driving. Securing the functional safety of autonomous vehicles from unexpected faults of sensors is essential for avoidance of fatal accidents. Because the magnitude and type of the faults cannot be known exactly, the RLS based A-SMO for unknown acceleration fault reconstruction has been designed with relationship function in this study. It is assumed that longitudinal acceleration of preceding vehicle can be obtained by using the V2V (Vehicle to Vehicle) communication. The kinematic model that represents relative relation between subject and preceding vehicles has been used for fault reconstruction. In order to reconstruct fault signal in acceleration, the magnitude of the injection term has been adjusted by adaptation rule designed based on MIT rule. The proposed A-SMO in this study was developed in Matlab/Simulink environment. Performance evaluation has been conducted using the commercial software (CarMaker) with car-following scenario and evaluation results show that maximum reconstruction error ratios exist within range of ±10%.

  • We report on a diode-laser-pumped mode-locked Yb:KGW laser system, which delivers ultrashort pulses down to 89 fs at a repetition rate of 63 MHz, with an average power of up to 5.6 W. A fiber-coupled diode laser at 981 nm, operated with a compact driver, is used to optically pump the gain crystal via an off-axis parabolic mirror. A semiconductor saturable-absorber mirror is used to initiate the pulsed operation. Laser characteristics such as the pulse duration, spectrum bandwidth, and output power are investigated by varying the intracavity dispersions via changing the number of bounces between negative-dispersive mirrors within the cavity. Short pulses with a duration of 89 fs, a center wavelength of 1,027 nm, and 3.6 W of output power are produced at a group-velocity dispersion (GVD) of -3,300 fs2. As the negative GVD increases, the pulse duration lengthens but the output power at the single-pulse condition can be enhanced, reaching 5.6 W at a GVD of -6,600 fs2. Because of pulse broadening at high negative GVDs, the highest peak intensity is achievable at a moderate GVD with our system.

  • For the purpose of treating health checkups and recovery of patients in a super-aged society, hospitals use devices designed with a reduction circuit of electromagnetic waves associated with the specific absorption rate of electromagnetic waves absorbed by the human body. In this paper, we proposed a filter improvement design method capable of reducing electromagnetic waves. As a result of confirming the validity of the proposed technique through simulation and experimental results, the following result values were obtained. Applying the common-mode (CM) inductor 4 mH to a calibration circuit, noise decreased in a multiband spectrum. Using the differential mode(DM) inductor 40 µH element in the primary calibration circuit, the noise decreased by 15 dB or more in the 3 MHz band spectrum. Also, applying the Admittance Capacitance (Y-Cap) 10 nF element in the secondary calibration circuit resulted in the decrease by more than 30 dB in the band spectrum before 2 MHz. After using a common-mode inductor 4 mH element in the tertiary calibration circuit, it decreased by more than 15 dB in the band spectrum after 2 MHz.
