  • It is not easy job to find a underwater target using sonar system in the ASW operations. Many researchers have tried to solve anti-submarine search problem aiming to maximize the probability of detection under limited searching conditions. The classical 'Search Theory' deals with search allocation problem and search path problem. In both problems, the main issue is to prioritize the searching cells in a searching area. The number of possible searching path that is combination of the consecutive searching cells increases rapidly by exponential function in the case that the number of searching cells or searchers increases. The more searching path we consider, the longer time we calculate. In this study, an effective algorithm that can maximize the probability of detection in shorter computation time is presented. We show the presented algorithm is quicker method than previous algorithms to solve search problem through the comparison of the CPU computation time.

  • The acoustical response of fish depends on size and physical structure na, most important, on the presence or absence of a swimbladder. Acoustic scattering models for swimbladdered fish represent a fish by an ideal pressure-release surface having the size and shape as the swimbladder. Target strength experiments of red seabream (Chrysophrys major) have been conducted using 38 (split-beam), 120 (split-beam) and 200kHz (dual-beam) frequencies. At each start of each experiment, the live fish are placed in the cage at the surface, then the cage is lowed to about $4{\cal}m$ depth where it remains during the measurements. To test the acoustic models, predictions of target strength based on swimbladder morphometries of 10 red seabream offish total length from $103{\cal}mm{\;}to{\;}349{\cal}mm$ ($3 <$TL/\lambda$ < 45)are compared with conventional target strength measurements on the same, shock-frozen immediately after caged experiments. X-ray was projected along dorsal aspect to know the morphological construction of swimbladder. and fish body. At high frequencies, Helmholtz-kirchhoff(HK) approximation would greatly enhance swimbladdered fish modeling. Sound scattering model [HK-ray approximation model] for comparison to experimental target strength data was used to model backscatter measurements from individual fish. The scattering data can be used in the inverse method along with multiple frequency sonar systems to investigate the adequacy of classification and identification of fish

  • For the analysis of Acoustic Target Strength(TS) that indicates the scattered acoustic intensity from the underwater vehicles, an analysis program that is applicable to scatterers insonified by spherical wave source in near field is developed. In this program, the Physical Optics(PO) method is embedded as a base component. To increase the accuracy of the program, multiple bounce effects based on Geometrical Optics(GO) method are applied. To implement multiple bounce effects, GO method is used together with PO method. In detail, GO method has a concern in the evaluation of the effective area, and PO method is involved in the calculation of Acoustic Target Strength for the final effective area that is evaluated by GO method. For the embodiment of near field spherical wave source originated multiple bounce effects, image source concept is implemented additively to the existing multiple bounce algorithm which assumes plane wave insonification. Various types of models are tested to evaluate the reliability of the developed program and finally, a submarine is analyzed as an arbitrary scatterer.

  • It is important to predict accurately reverberation level, which is a limiting factor in underwater target detection. Recently, the studies have been expanded from monostatic sonar to bistatic sonar in which source and receivers are separated. To simulate the bistatic reverberation level, the computation processes for propagation, scattering strength, and scattering cross section are different from those in monostatic case and more complex computation processes are required. Although there have been many researches for bistatic reverberation, few studies have assessed the bistatic scattering cross section which is a key factor in simulate reverberation level. In this paper, a new method to estimate the bistatic scattering cross section is suggested, which uses the area of intersection between two circles. Finally, the reverberation levels simulated with the scattering cross section estimated using the method suggested in this paper are compared with those estimated using the methods previously suggested and those measured from an acoustic measurements conducted in May 2013.

  • Since the detection probability is critically dependent on the target strength (TS) in active sonar and on the radiated noise level (RNL) in passive sonar, the acoustic materials for echo reduction (ER) and transmission loss (TL) are widely used for the stealth of underwater targets. In this paper, a measurement system based on the small water tank, for the frequency range of greater than 30 kHz, is developed and verified using reference targets. In order to design the water tank and the geometry of test samples, a program is developed to calculate the arrival time of interfering signals due to the reflection from water tank walls and also due to the diffraction from the edge of the test samples. Considering all the interfering signals, an optimal experimental configuration for water tank and test samples is designed and used throughout the experiment. Next, the signal processing algorithms to estimate ER and TL are developed based on the measured propagation loss reflecting the geometric spreading characteristics of the transducer. Finally, a set of reference targets such as aluminium plate and perfectly reflecting plate are used in a small water tank to verify the developed measurement system.

  • In sonar systems, the passive ranging of a target is an active research area. This paper analyzed the performance of passive ranging based on an array invariant method for different environmental and sonar parameters. The array invariant developed for source range estimation in shallow water. The advantages of this method are that detailed environmental information is not required, and the real-time ranging is possible since the computational burden is very small. Simulation was performed to verify the algorithm. And this method is applied to sea-going experimental data in 2013 near Jinhae port. This study shows the performance of ranging for source orientation, transmission signal length, and length of a receiver through numerical simulation experiments. Also, the results using nested array and uniform line arrays are compared.

  • This article describes the ultrasonic range sensor for the recognition of the Indoor environment, especially utilizing the multiple reflection properties of the sonar usually ignored as disturbances or noises. In this paper, we endow the ultrasonic range sensor with the active motion using the stepping servomechanism in order to get the multiple reflections with environment objects. Environment features such as target type, distance and azimuth based on the scanned one frame data of that multiple reflection patterns are recognized simultaneously.

  • Most surgery illumination systems have been developed as passive systems. However, sometimes it is inconvenient to relocate the position of the illumination system whenever the surgeon changes his pose. To cope with such a problem, this study develops an auto-illumination system that is autonomously tracking the surgeon's movement. A 5-DOF serial type manipulator system that can control (X, Y, Z, Yaw, Pitch) position and secure enough workspace is developed. Using 3 ultrasonic sensors, the surgeon's position and orientation could be located. The measured data aresent to the main control system so that the robot can be auto-tracking the target. Finally, performance of the developed auto-illuminating system was verified through a preliminary experiment in the operating room environment.

  • Various methods of enhancing the performance of passive range sonar arrays have been discussed, triangulation, wavefront curvature method etc. But they are not appropriate to the methods because of very low SNR in underwater environment. We made appropriate sub-arrays in a linear array and applied to the beamformers such as a minimum variance with null constraints.
