This study was to evaluate the efficiency of different solvent systems to extract active ingredients from different parts of medicinal plants used as oriental medicinal herb in the cosmetic industry. We tested efficacies related to the antioxidative effects and UV absorption of herbal extracts as complex of active ingredients, not each single ingredient. When extracting medicinal plant which is used effective medicine, we should consider the collecting conditions like collecting time, place, part and extracting conditions like solvent, temperature, time, and etc. Among them, extraction solvent and collecting part are very important factors for the efficacy. As increased interest in medicinal plants, more intensive studies on collecting conditions and extracting processes were needed for the developments in the herbal ingredient industry. We evaluated the efficiency of different solvent systems to extract active ingredients from different parts of plants (Terminalia chebula, Syzygium aromaticum, Paeonia lactiflora, Morus alba, Scutellaria baicalensis) widely used as medicine and food. As results, we found that proper condition can make better data and decrease the required quantity.
Red ginseng extracts accounted for the major precipitating material in red ginseng drink prepared with various components and pasteuralized at $80^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Precipitates in red ginseng extracts isolated by centrifugation were investigated for its chemical components and physicochemical properties. Recovery of precipitates in red ginseng extracts was 1.59% on a dry weight basis. Precipitates were composed of starch (71.47%), crude protein (21.75%), pectin (1.70%), polyphenol (2.97%) and calcium (3.83 ppm) but ginsenosides were not present. Absorption peak at 285 nm which appeared in red ginseng extracts was absent in the precipitates. pH and Hunter L value of the precipitates decreased, while Hunter a and b values increased in contrast to red ginseng extracts. Precipitates were solubilized to some extent in polar solvent. The shape of precipitate particle was round, sciral or irregular square. Particle size of precipitates varied from 0.17 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 41.3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in length.
For the research of antifungal active constituents from natural products, 226 plants were extracted with ether and methanol, separately, and screened antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Penicillium avellaneum cells. The results demonstrated that 30 samlpes showed antifungal activity in ether or methanol extracts and 17 samples in ether extracts and 20 samples in methanol extracts against C. albicans. Against P. avellaneum, 19 samlpes showed antifungal activity in ether or methanol extracts and 17 samples in ether extracts and 11 samples in methanol extracts, respectively. The antifungal activity of natural products against C. albicans were showed more sensitive than P. avellaneum, and the polarity of the solvent was not specific in antifungal activity.

This study was designed to analyze the effects of methanol extracts and solvent fractions of the young branch of Prunus persica on scavenging activity of ROS, RNS and inhibiting activity of oxidative modification in human LDL induced by copper ion or free radical generator. The scavenging capacities of the fractions on DPPH radical, superoxide radical, nitric oxide and peroxynitrite were exhibited the highest in ethylacetate fraction, followed by butanol fraction. In the copper-induced LDL oxidative modification system, the highest antioxidant activity was revealed in ethylacetate fraction, and butanol fraction exhibited a similar activity. However, solvent fractions of the young branch of Prunus persica showed a relatively low antioxidant activity in the AAPH-mediated LDL oxidation. In addition, ethylacetate and butanol fractions also inhibited the copper-mediated LDL oxidation in the REM assay, which was comparable to that of the positive controls, including EDTA, ascorbic acid and BHT. Futhermore, a content of total phenolics in these two fractions was higher than that of the other fractions. These results indicated that ethylacetate and butanol fractions of the young branch of Prunus persica were useful for the prevention of the free radical- or metal ion-induced oxidative damages.

Lycium barbarum extract has a high potential to be developed as a health functional food due to the various health-promoting effects of Lycium barbarum. This study analyzed changes in nutritional and functional components depending on the extraction solvent (purified water and a mixture of purified water and alcohol) and the condition of the sample. The nutritional components (carbohydrates, protein, fat, ash), organic acids, amino acids, total phenolic compounds, and total flavonoids of the extract produced during the extraction process were analyzed. The nutritional composition and functional substances of the extracts showed some differences depending on the type of solvent and the condition of the sample. The amounts of crude protein (7.61%), crude fat (1.63%), carbohydrate (90.22%), and ash (0.54%) of dried Lycium barbarum extract using purified water as a solvent were similar to those of the powder sample extract. The highest content of citric acid was 4.31 mg/mL, similar to the case of acetic acid, when the powder sample used a mixture of purified water and alcohol as a solvent. The highest amino acid content was 357.39 mg/mL when the powder sample was mixed with purified water and alcohol as a solvent. The total amount of phenolic compounds was 686.16 g/L when the powder sample was extracted with a mixture of purified water and alcohol as a solvent. The highest total flavonoid content was 111.32 g/L when the powder sample was extracted with a mixture of purified water and alcohol as a solvent.

Yields of various solvent extracts for Zanthoxylum schinifolium and Z. piperitum leaves were higher in ethanol extract layer. Ethanol Extract in sancho and chopi leaves was fractionated with different solvents, such as hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol and water, yields of hexane fraction was higher. In the solvent extracts using methanol, ethanol, hexane, chloroform, and water, ethanol extract showed the most effective antimicrobial activities. Ethanol extract in sancho and chopi leaves was fractionated, the most antimicrobial activities of sancho leaf were ethyl acetate fraction, and chopi leaf were chloroform fraction.
Solvent extracts of 17 plants collected in Cheju Island were investigated for their biological properties related to cosmeceuticals such as tyrosinase and hyaluronidase inhibition and also radical scavenging effects. The chloroform fraction of Phytolacca esculenta root exhibited strong inhibition against tyrosinase activity. No fraction showed significant hyaluronidase inhibition. Some solvent extracts of plants such as Achyranthes japonica and Artemisia princeps showed considerable radical scavenging activities.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenolic acid, proanthocyanidin (PAs), and flavonol glycoside contents, as well as the antioxidant activities of pine needle extracts from six species of young pine trees. The extracts were prepared from Section Pinus (Diploxylon): P. densiflora, P. sylvestris, P. pinaster and P. pinea, and Section Strobus (Haploxylon): P. koraiensis and P. strobus. Phenolics were extracted from pine needles with 80% acetone to obtain the soluble free fraction, and insoluble residues were digested with 4 M NaOH to obtain bound ethyl acetate and bound water fractions. Phenolics were analyzed by HPLC, and the hydrophilic antioxidant activity was measured using oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). Total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the soluble free fraction were higher than those of the bound ethyl acetate and bound water fractions. The main phenolics were monomers and polymers of PAs in the soluble free fraction, and phenolic acids and flavonol glycosides in bound ethyl acetate fraction. Flavonol glycosides found in different species of pine needles were qualitatively similar within fractions, but composition varied among Pinus sections. High levels of kaempferol arabinoside and an unknown compound were present in all Strobus species. The soluble free fraction had the highest antioxidant activity, followed by bound ethyl acetate and bound water fractions.

Objective : In this study, the effect of Atractylodes japonica against LPS induced inflammation in mouse microglia BV2 cells was investigated. Method : Microglia BV2 Cells viability was determined using the MTT assay. We used water, ethanol extract from Atractylodes japonica and studied on the anti-inflammatory effect of lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), western blot, and nitric oxide detection on mouse microglia BV2 cells. Result : The MTT assay revealed that it's extract has no significant cytotoxicity in the microglia BV2 cell. Various solvent extract from Atractylodes japonica inhibited nitrite production, iNOS protein and mRNA expression levels. And also it's extracts significantly reduced lipopolysaccharide-induced COX-2 activation in RT-PCR and western blot in lipopolysaccharide-induced microglia BV2 cells Conclusion : In this study, it's extracts was shown to suppress NO production by inhibiting iNOS expression and COX-2 activity. With this effects of anti-inflammation, we suggests that, it's extracts may be a useful candidate for the development of a drug on the related inflammatory diseases in brain.
This study is carried out to evaluate the genotoxicity of herbs (Angelica decursiva, Polypori umbellate, Astragalus membranaceua, Paeonia iactiflora, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Cnidium officinale, Rehmannia glutinosa, Cyperus rotundus, Dioscorea batatas and Platycodi Radix) by using the Ames test. The Salmonella typhimurium reversion assay is being performed by using the Sal. typhimurium TA98, TA100, TA102, TA1535 and TA1537 as tester strains. Among 70% of ethanol extracts from 10 herbs, the number of revertant colonies is being increased in Astragalus membranaceua, Cnidium officinale and Dioscorea batatas in a dose-dependent manner, as compared with negative controls of the metabolic activation. In case of dichloromethane and ethyl acetate fraction from 70% of ethanol extracts, the number of revertant colonies is increased in Angelica decursiva, Astragalus membranaceua, Cnidium officinale, Rehmannia glutinosa and Dioscorea batatas in a dose-dependent manner, as compared with negative controls of metabolic activation. Such results indicate that Angelica decursiva, Astragalus membranaceua, Cnidium officinale, Rehmannia glutinosa and Dioscorea batatas all show genotoxic effects when being extracted with the solvent extractions such as 70% of ethanol, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate, and thus, they might be genotoxically- non-safe.
