  • In this research, we focused on the improvement of cy3 dye's characteristics for LCD color filter. Solubility and thermal stability are main characteristics of dyes for LCD color filter. We performed experiment to change counter cation of cy3 dyes with alkoxy substituent for these purposes. These cy3 dyes (1b~5b) were prepared through the synthetic procedure of three steps. The synthesized new cy3 dyes were charaterized by using NMR, FT-IR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and TGA. These cy3 dyes showed purple color and maximum absorption wavelength (${\lambda}_{max}$) in the range of 578~590 nm in UV/Vis spectrum. We confirmed that solubility and thermal stability of cy3 dyes were dependent on the structure of counter cation. Cy3 dyes with alkoxy substituent have good solubility in organic solvents such as dichloromethane, methanol, and acetone. Especially, Cy3 dye with 4-nitrobenzyl counter cation (5b) gave excellent solubility characteristics.

  • In this paper, the density, viscosity and solubility are measured to know the physical properties of dye. By changing the concentration of dye solution, the density change of the dye solution was very small and the viscosity of the dye solution was increased. Also, by changing the temperature of dye solution, the density change of the dye solution was increased but the viscosity of the dye solution was decreased. Solubility of dye conducts under the changing the salt and concentration of dye. In 20 wt% of dye and 15 wt% KCl, the amount of dye crystal is maximal. Also, batch salting-out experiments were performed with various conditions to know the optimal operating conditions of dye crystal. Under the various experiments, optimal operating condition was found based on amount of dye; added 15 wt% KCl, $25^{\circ}C$ temperature, 100 RPM, added at once.

  • The supercritical dyeing process has been gaining the increasing importance because of environment reason. For further development of this process, it is needed to measure the solubility in supercritical fluids in the extensive ranges of temperature and pressure. In this study, using the semi-flow type apparatus consisted of supercritical fluid equilibrium cell, the solubility of disperse dye(C.I. disperse red 60) in supercritical HFC-134a has been measured at the temperatures of 383.2 K and 413.2 K, and in the pressure range of 50 bar to 160 bar. The solubility data are, with good agreement, correlated by an expanded liquid model which considers the supercritical fluid as compressed liquid.

  • Wool fabrics were dyed with the aqueous solution of C. I. Red Acid 114 mixed with methanol dissolving three kinds of barely water soluble ketones, acetophenone, 2-pentanone, and 3-pentanone. The steric hinderance and the orientation of the bigger hydrophobic part of the solvated dye molecules to the fiber slowed down the dying rate, however, loosening the wool molecule, say a little swelling, disaggeregating the dye molecules, and attaining the higher dye concentration on the fiber surface by the added solvents increased the amount of dye on the fabric. The higher concentration or/and the higher dyeing temperature helped loosen fiber molecules and made it easier for the solvated dye molecules to penetrate into the inside of the fiber. Acetophenone, the most influential solvent used, showed that the ability to loosen fiber molecules was the most important of all the three positive solvent actions mentioned above. The considered mechanism provided before reflected the fact that the dye uptake on the fabric dyed with the solvents included, except for 0.034M and 0.051M of acetophenone, was even lower than that without any solvents at $50^\circ{C}$, but all the solvents added to the dye bath increased the dye uptake on the fiber at $70^\circ{C}$.

  • Salting-out technique was adopted to crystallize dye crystals from dye solution. Solubility of dye solution and crystallization kinetics of Reactive Red 218 was investigated. Solubility of dye solution is decreased by higher KCl concentration. The empirical expressions of salting-out crystallization kinetics for Reactive Red 218 in continuous MSMPR crystallizer was $G=6.864{\times}10^{-5}{\Delta}C^{1.207}$ and $B^0=4.8{\times}10^{22}{\Delta}C[1.1{\times}10^{-13}+{({\Delta}C)}^{0.7}{M_T}^2]$.

  • In the prior study, we found that the dye uptakes of C. I. Disperse Violet 1 on PET in hexane and cyclohexane were higher than those in the other solvents. Therefore, in this study, the dye uptakes and the partition coefficients in alkanes having different number of carbon atoms were obtained and their relationship to the solubilities of the dye in alkanes was also investigated. As the number of carbon atoms of alkanes increases, solubility of the dye increases but the dye uptake decreases. This is due to the fact that the hydrophobicity of alkanes become relatively strong as increasing the number of carbon atoms. It was also found that the dye uptakes in iso-alkanes were larger than those in normal alkanes. This is because that the branched alkanes(iso-alkanes), judging from the tendency of lowering solubility and increasing dye uptake as decreasing the number of carbon atoms of alkanes, behave like the alkanes with less number of carbon atoms rather than the alkanes with the same number of carbon atoms. The logarithmic plot of the dye uptakes vs. the solubilities of the dye showed that the dye uptakes are linearly and inversely proportional to the solubilities. This is in good accordance with the results of the prior study. The heat of dyeing was also calculated from the equilibrium adsorptions at various temperatures. It seemed that the dyeings of PET by C. I. Disperse Violet 1 in nonane, decane, iso-pentane and iso-octane were rather endothermic processes. Dyeing rates in alkanes were somewhat delayed unlike general appearances in solvent dyeing.

  • To reduce the dependence of wool dyeing on the temperature several solvents with different properties and structures were added to the dye bath of C. I. Acid Yellow 42. Nearly the same total solubility parameters(${\delta}_t$) of solvents as those of wool fiber and hydrophobic part of the dyestuff were needed to increase disaggregation of dye molecules, loosening the wool fiber and wickabilty of dyeing solution; besides, the large surface tension(${\gamma}$) value of the solvents and the well balanced values of the three-component Hansen solubility parameters such as dispersion(${\delta}_d$), polar(${\delta}_p$), and hydrogen(${\delta}_h$) bonding parameters were required. Among the added solvents dimethyl phthalate(DMP) and acetophenone(AP) were satisfied with these conditions and worked the most successfully in the low temperature wool dyeing. Their effectiveness proven by the dyeing rate and the activation energy ($E_a$) of the dyeing was in the order of DMP > AP > DBE > CH > M >NONE. In conclusion the total solubility parameters(${\delta}_t$), the three-component Hansen parameters and the surface tension(${\gamma}$) of DMP and AP could be the guidelines to select suitable solvents for low temperature wool dyeing.

  • In order to examine the availability of color developing for prepared persimmon extract powder dyes, purified and freeze-dried powder from immature persimmon fruit. The cotton fabrics dyed with 1% concentration of powder dyes. This study was conducted to examine into the color developing effects of the powder dye for the dyed cotton fabrics irradiated with xenon light. Powder dye is difficult to dissolve in water resulting in a colloidal and viscous solution. The problem of solubility in water was resolved by setting the dyeing conditions by wetting the dye with alcohol in advance and dissolving in warm water($50{\sim}60^{\circ}C$). Samples had no alkaline conversion in making process of powder dyes showed high color developing effect(${\Delta}E^*$, K/S). Samples showed decreased ${\Delta}E^*$, K/S with increased alkaline conversion in making process of powder dyes. Samples that had alkaline effects displayed easy early color developing to be advantageous in the process of natural pattern in art work.

  • In this article, we synthesized an azo dye rotaxane containing bis(8-hydroxyquinoline) group and its polymeric metal complex with zinc. The azo dye rotaxane exhibits high pH sensitivity, solvatochromism and zinc (II) ion sensings in aqueous solution. These behaviors came from the tautomeric equilibrium between azo-hydrazone tautomers and the formation of extended conjugation. The structure of polymeric zinc complexed dye rotaxane was confirmed with NMR and FT-IR measurements. The existence of CD rings, provided by dye rotaxane formation, was found to be very beneficial in improving aqueous solubility of polymeric metal complex.
