  • Liquid and solid fuels currently in use have various pros and cons. As a result, researches are dedicated to produce a new form of fuel that utilizes the advantages and overcomes weakness of conventional fuels. In the present study, a new method for making solidified ethanol fuel is introduced, and its preliminary properties and combustion characteristic are observed. The solidified ethanol fuel was made through the production of agarose hydrogel, and its subsequent soaking into pure ethanol. The properties of the solidified ethanol fuel were quantitatively and qualitatively observed, and its validity and applicability discussed.

  • This study was purposed to evaluate the characteristic changes of the solidified livestock manure fuel(SLMF) through the application of compression treatment process. The compression process led to an increase of VS/TS ratio (Volatile solids/Total solids ratio) and moisture removal effect of SLMF. The amount of leachate withdrawn from dairy cattle manure and Hanwoo manure by compression were 21~26%(w/w) and 15~20%(w/w), respectively. The specific gravity of the leachate of dairy cattle manure and Hanwoo manure were 1.01 and 0.99, respectively. The dehydrated cow manure was easily processed into ball-shaped solidified fuel. The drying time of the SLMF was proportional to the diameter of the solidified fuel. The highest heating value was observed in diameter range of 10~15mm SLMF. It is concluded that the higher heating value of 10~15mm SLMF was related with the amount of fibrous matter contained in the SLMF.

  • The effect of materials on fuel coolant interactions (FCIs) was analyzed on the basis of a solidified particle size response for TROI experiments.$^{(1)}$ The solidified particle size response can provide an understanding of the relationship among the initial condition, the mixing, and an explosion. Through a comparison of the size distributions of the solidified particles in the case of explosive and non-explosive FCIs, it is revealed that an explosive FCI results in the production of a large amount of fine particles and a small amount of large particles. The material effect of the size of solidified particles was analyzed using non-explosive FCIs without losing the information on the mixing. This analysis indicates that an explosive melt includes large particles that participate in the steam explosion, whereas a nonexplosive melt includes smaller particles and finer particles.

  • The decommissioning of a nuclear power plant generates large amounts of radioactive waste, which is of several types. Radioactive concrete powder is classified as low-level waste, which can be disposed of in a landfill. However, its safe disposal in a landfill requires that it be immobilized by solidification using cement. Herein, a safety assessment on the disposal of solidified radioactive concrete powder waste in a conceptual landfill site is performed using RESRAD. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses of certain selected input parameters are conducted to investigate their impact on exposure doses. The exposure doses are estimated, and the relative impact of each pathway on them during the disposal of this waste is assessed. The results of this study can be used to obtain information for designing a landfill site for the safe disposal of low-level radioactive waste generated from the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate feasibility of semi-dry anaerobic digestion using dairy cattle manure and to evaluate solidified fuel value of semi-dry anaerobic digestate. To evaluate semi-dry anaerobic digestion using dairy cattle manure, 950 mL bottle type anaerobic reactor was set in the constant temperature room maintained at $35^{\circ}C$. To produce anaerobic digestate for making solidified fuel, acrylic cylindrical anaerobic digester(1,000 mm width ${\times}$ 450 mm height) was set in the constant room temperature to carry out batch test of semi-dry anaerobic digestion using same dairy cattle manure. Moisture content of dairy cattle manure and inoculum solution for anaerobic digestion were 80.64% and 96.83%, respectively. The dairy cattle manure and the inoculum solution was mixed by 1:1 ratio(v/v) for anaerobic digestion. Water content and VS/TS(Volatile Solids/Total Solids) of mixture of substrate and inoculum were 89.74% and 83.35%, respectively. In case of non-inoculated anaerobic digester, the biogas was not produced. By the semi-dry anaerobic digestion, the calorific value of the digestate was reduced by 20% compare to fresh dairy cattle manure. In other hand, ash content increased from 15% to 18.4%. The contents of Cr, Pb, Cd and S of pellet produced from anaerobically digested dairy cattle manure were not against the standard regulation for livestock manure solidified fuel. Therefore, it can be used as fuel that anaerobic digestate produced after semi-dry anaerobic digestion using dairy cattle manure.

  • The low temperature characteristics of automotive diesel have been legally regulated due to the fact that solid particle in diesel at low temperature can cause severe problems in the vehicle. The biodiesel is well known for eco-friendly fuel, which is one of the most popular alternative petrodiesel, but it is easy to solidified at low temperature than petrodiesel at low temperature. For that reason, in this study, we investigated the low temperature fuel characteristics of diesel-biodiesel blends which were prepared to mix 6 different kinds of biodiesel to winter diesel fuel, respectively. Also, we confirmed to improve low temperature fuel characteristics by pour point depressant.

  • It is very important to supply the diesel fuel from fuel tank to combustion chamber in case of cold start procedure. the paraffin hydrocarbons are easily solidified at low fuel temperature and it can be blocking the fuel supply to the high pressure fuel pump. In order to reduce the fuel crystallization (Waxing), it have been used to develop not only cold flow additives but also the proper mounting design of fuel filter. Block heater in the fuel filter assembly have been also contained to improve the cold start and prevent blocking the fuel supply in Common Rail Direct Injection System. we can obtain the fuel pressure drop and fuel flow rate, power consumption of fuel heater to have the cold flow evaluation test with the saperated and composited fuel heater at the low ambient temperature, Due to evaluating cold flow performance of two block heater, we knew that composited package fuel heater was the excellent cold flow performance compared to separated type and obtained the parameters of cold flow.

  • While using an electrokinetic method to analyze the characteristics of cement solidification of radioactive wastes from decontaminated uranium soil and concrete, the compressive strength, pH, electrical conductivity, irradiation effects, and volume expansion were measured for the solidified cement specimens. The workability of cement solidified from radioactive waste was about 170-190%. After the solidified cement was irradiated, the compressive strength decreased by about 15%, but met the criteria ($34kgf{\cdot}cm^{-2}$) of KORAD (Korea Radioactive Waste Agent). According to the results of SEM-EDS for solidified cement, the aluminum phase was well combined with cement, while the calcium phase was separated from cement. The volume of solidified cement in radioactive wastes was dependent on the waste-to-cement ratio and the amount of water, and increased by about 30% under the conditions used in this study. Therefore, it was concluded that permanent disposal of electrokinetically decontaminated radioactive wastes is appropriate.

  • The drying test was carried on the globular type cow manure pellet for use in solid fuel applications. The globular type cow manure pellet fuel was sorted according to size by rotatory sieves. The three kind of drying methods such as convection hot-air drying method, infrared ray drying method and superheated steam method were used to dry the globular type cow manure pellet. Among the three kind of drying methods, superheated steam method of dry time was the shortest. The apparent specific gravity and low calorific value of dried cow manure pelltes was about $250{\sim}350kg/m^3$ and above 3,000 kcal/kg respectively. The smaller the particle size of cow manure pellets, the less drying time was required. The time was required very less for drying smaller particle size cow manure pellet when compared to larger size. In the case of the same drying condition, it has been found that reducing the particle size of cow manure fuel pellet is an important factor for shortening the drying time of the livestock manure pellet.
