  • The combustion efficiency of the solid fuel ramjet is affected by the inlet air temperature. And this inlet air temperature is dependent on the flight Mach number and the environment air temperature. If the flight altitude is changeable, the inlet air temperature and the air density also vary. The performance efficiency is investigated with this variables related to the combustion efficiency.

  • Recently air breathing propulsion system is much interested in relatively comparing to the conventional chemical propulsion, and the R&D of this area is performed much more including the basic research of the solid ramjet in our country. The boron is applied to the solid fuel because of its high heating value, but it has a complicated combustion characteristics. therefore many researches have been studied in this area. In this paper the combustion characteristics of the boron have been investigated through the published papers for the purpose of the ramjet fuel application.

  • In general, combustion characteristic of hybrid propulsion was shown with the regression rate depending on only massflow rate of oxidizer But this empirical relation was not represented well effect of the thermo-chemical properties of solid fuel. So, in this study, the combustion characteristics was studied with the mass transfer number(B number) of solid fuel instead of regression rate with various fuel. The PMMA, PP, and PE were used as fuel, and gas oxygen as oxidizer in this experiment. The mass flowrate of gas oxigen was controlled by the several chocked orifices that have different diameter, and the oxidizer supply range was $3.66\sim45.3g/sec$. As result, the empirical relation for mass flux of solid fuel was obtained with mass transfer number, and mass flux of oxidizer as follow; $\dot{m}^{'}_f\;=\;0.0175G^{0.55}B^{0.4}$.

  • Hybrid rocket had many advantage with compared to solid and liquid rockets. In this study, swirl flow hybrid motor was designed and manufactured. And the methods of regression rate improvement were considered. Thrust was calculated with pressure of the combustion chamber and the regression rate was measured by using ultrasonic sensor technique in entire firing conditions. In this study, PMMA fuel and HTPB solid fuel were used in firing test.

  • The thermo-structural analysis of the solid-fuel propulsion Nozzle is studied to estimate the thermo-structural safety of the metal nozzle. The thermal load is determined to be significantly large, Because the metal nozzle in a short combustion time is directly exposed to high pressure and temperature of combustion gas. Through a analysis result, the influence of a thermal load is estimated and henceforward a design data of thruster is used.

  • This is a reviewing paper on the ramjet development programs of the U.S.A. and European countries through the presented papers at the ISABE 2005 and Joint Propulsion Conference 2008. Interestingly, the programs which are developing now are only limited on the ducted rocket, neither liquid nor pure solid fuel ramjet.

  • In this study, the design method of a 155 mm Solid Fuel Ramjet projectile is proposed and a flight performance analysis program through mathematical modelling is developed. Through flight performance analysis, ramjet performance during flight, which is comprised of thrust, specific impulse, pressure recovery ratio, location of shock waves, and magnitude of drag, was predicted. The results show that compared to Rocket Assisted Projectile(RAP), the range was increased by 90 %. Furthermore, how variations in nozzle exit area ratio and the intake area cause variations in range was observed. This research on modeling and simulation methodology will provide useful data for future development of solid fuel ramjet projectiles.

  • Fuel mass flux was experienced with a function of the oxidizer mass flux using initial port area of solid fuel, in stead of regression rate correlation which shows combustion characteristic in hybrid propulsion. The burning rate could be easily obtained by using the oxidizer mass flux of initial port area without iteration, and fuel configuration could be designed simply. In this experiments PE was used as fuel, COX was used as oxidizer. A variation of mass flux of solid fuel with port area is considered by changing the burning time. In the case of approximate 0.5 for an exponent of oxidizer mass flux, using the fuel mass flux correlation is more suitable than regression rate correlation in hybrid propulsion.

  • Fuel cells are applied to the propulsion system of aircraft based on environmental-friendly characteristics with low noise and zero emission of CO2, currently many kinds of UAV and small manned aircraft equipped with fuel cells are being developed. Fuel cells for aircraft typically classified into PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) type and SOFC(Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) type and the system is developed to adapt missions and operational conditions of aircraft. For UAV, various types of aircraft mostly based on PEM fuel cell technology are investigated for military or commercial uses, and the stability and endurance of system will be improved. For small manned aircraft, many researches are carried out to substitute the propulsion system by fuel cell, also some developments for the higher performance of APU of large commercial aircraft to apply fuel cells are in progress. In the future, a fuel cell aircraft will be expected to improve the reliability and efficiency with higher power density.
