  • The performance behavior of solid oxide fuel cell using $H_2$ and CO as fuels was investigated. The power densities and impedance results showed a little variation as the ratio of $H_2$ and CO changed. However, when the pure CO was used as a fuel, area specific resistance (ASR), especially low frequency region, was increased. This might be due to carbon deposition on anode. The maximum power density was 60% lower using CO than using $H_2$. Carbon deposition reduced after constant current was applied. The SOFC performance was recovered from the carbon deposition after applying constant current during 100h.

  • Interest in hydrogen productions that do not emit carbon dioxide and can produce hydrogen at a low price is increasing. Reforming and electrolysis are widely used, but they have limitations, such as carbon dioxide problems and costs. The methane can be decomposed as hydrogen and solid carbon without carbon dioxide emission at high temperatures. In this research, the methane pyrolysis experiment was conducted at 1,200℃ and 1,400℃ in a ceramic tube. The composition of the produced gas was measured by gas chromatography before carbon blocked the tube. The methane conversion rate and hydrogen selectivity were calculated based on the results. The hydrogen selectivity was derived as 60% and 55% at the highest point at 1,200℃ and 1,400℃, respectively. The produced solid carbon was expected to be carbon black and was analyzed using scanning electron microscope.

  • This research exposes the process of carbonization of solid waste from the city and the method of activated, as well as the process of meso-porous under several test conditions. In addition, it is expected that the active carbon obtained through this process can be used as filter for air and sewage treatment, and can absorb dioxin(as almost 60-80% of meso-porous and porous properties area) unlike the existing active carbon.

  • Graphene is a fascinating material with excellent electrical, optical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Remarkable progress has been made in the development of methods for synthesizing large-area, high-quality graphene. Recently, the chemical vapor deposition method has opened up the possibility of using graphene for electronic devices and other applications. This review covers simple and inexpensive methods to grow graphene using polymers as solid carbon sources; which do not require an additional process to transfer graphene from the growth substrate to the receiver substrate.

  • A single-layer graphene has been uniformly grown on a Cu surface at elevated temperatures by thermally processing a poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film in a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) system under vacuum. The detailed chemistry of the transition from solid-state carbon to graphene on the catalytic Cu surface was investigated by performing in-situ residual gas analysis while PMMA/Cu-foil samples being heated, in conjunction with interrupted growth studies to reconstruct ex-situ the heating process. We found that the gas species of mass/charge (m/e) ratio of 15 ($CH_3{^+}$) was mainly originated from the thermal decomposition of PMMA, indicating that the formation of graphene occurs with hydrocarbon molecules vaporized from PMMA, such as methane and/or methyl radicals, as precursors rather than by the direct graphitization of solid-state carbon. We also found that the temperature for dominantly vaporizing hydrocarbon molecules from PMMA and the length of time, the gaseous hydrocarbon atmosphere is maintained, are dependent on both the heating temperature profile and the amount of a solid carbon feedstock. From those results, we strongly suggest that the heating rate and the amount of solid carbon are the dominant factors to determine the crystalline quality of the resulting graphene film. Under optimal growth conditions, the PMMA-derived graphene was found to have a carrier (hole) mobility as high as ${\sim}2,700cm^2V^{-1}s^{-1}$ at room temperature, which is superior to common graphene converted from solid carbon.

  • Direct Carbon Fuel Cells (DCFCs) generates electricity directly converting the chemical energy in coal. In the present study, effects of anode and current collector materials on the power density of DCFC are investigated experimentally. The adopted DCFC system is combined type of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC) with the use of a liquid-molten salt anode and a solid oxide electrolyte, proposed by SRI. Power densities of 25 mm button cells with various combination of anode materials and current collector materials are measured.

  • In this research, experimental tensile test and manufacturing of carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam (CNTRC) is presented. Also, bending, buckling, and vibration analysis of CNTRC based on various beam theories such as Euler-Bernoulli, Timoshenko and Reddy beams are considered. At first, the experimental tensile tests are carried out for CNTRC and composite beams in order to obtain mechanical properties and then using Hamilton's principle the governing equations of motion are derived for Euler Bernoulli, Timoshenko and Reddy theories. The results have a good agreement with the obtained results by similar researches and it is shown that adding just two percent of carbon nanotubes increases dimensionless fundamental frequency and critical buckling load as well as decreases transverse deflection of composite beams. Also, the influences of different manufacturing processes such as hand layup and industrial methods using vacuum pump on composite properties are investigated. In these composite beams, glass fibers used in an epoxy matrix and for producing CNTRC, CNTs are applied as reinforcement particles. Applying two percent of CNTs leads to increase the mechanical properties and increases natural frequencies and critical buckling load and decreases deflection. The obtained natural frequencies and critical buckling load by theoretical method are higher than other methods, because there are some inevitable errors in industrial and hand layup method. Also, the minimum deflection occurs for theoretical methods, in bending analysis. In this study, Young's and shear modulli as well as density are obtained by experimental test and have not been used from the results of other researches. Then the theoretical analysis such as bending, buckling and vibration are considered by using the obtained mechanical properties of this research.

  • The study on laser-ablation plasmas has been strongly interested in fundamental aspects of laser-solid interaction and consequent plasma generation. In particular, this plasma has been widely used for the deposition of thin solid films and applied to the semiconductors and insulators. In this paper, we developed and discussed the generation of carbon ablation plasmas emitted by laser radiation on a solid target, graphite. The progress of carbon plasmas by laser-ablation was simulated using Monte-Carlo particle model under the pressures of vacuum, 1 Pa, 10 Pa and 66 Pa. At the results, carbon particles with low energy were deposited on the substrate as the pressure becomes higher. However, there was no difference of deposition distributions of carbon particles on the substrate regardless of the pressure.

  • With continuous development in the field of sample preparation technology, solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) has been widely used in analytical chemistry for high extraction efficiency and convenient operation. Different materials lead to different extraction results. Among existing materials, carbon-based materials are still attracting attention from scientists due to their excellent physical and chemical properties as well as their modifiable surfaces, which could enhance the adsorption effects of SPME fiber. This review introduces the preparation methods and applications of different kinds of carbon-based material coatings on fibers. In addition, directions for future research on carbon material composites are discussed.
