When a crystal is grown by FZ process, the melt zone is located at between the solid of upper and lower side and is kept by the solid-liquid interface tension. On the surface of the melt zone, a surface tension gradient is occured by the difference of temperature and solute concentration, it is the driving force of marangoni flow. The crystal even in the steady state growth can become imperfect for the dislocation distribution and the solute concentration in the peripheral region of the crystal are higher than those in the inner part and the probability of the formation of the defects such as voids, bubble penetration, secondary phase creation and crack is high near the solid-liquid interface. This is because the solid -liquid interface becomes irregular because of the local variation of temperature in that region due to marangoni convection.
We present the results of molecular dynamics simulations of monolayers of long-chain alkyl thiol [S(CH2)15CH3] molecules on an air-solid interface using the extended collapsed atom model for the chain-molecule and a gold surface for the solid surface. Several molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on monolayers with areas per molecule ranging from 18.30 to 32.10 Å2/molecule. It is found that there exist three possible transitions: a continuous transition characterized by a change in molecular configuration without change in lattice structure, a sudden transition characterized by the distinct lattice defects and perfect islands, and a third transition characterized by the appearance of a random, liquid-like state. The analysis of probability distributions of the segments shows that the structure of the chain-molecules at the air-solid interface is completely different from that at the air-water interface in the view of the degree of overlap of the probability distributions of the neighbor segments. The calculated diffusion coefficients of the chain-molecules on the monolayers seem to be not directly related to any one of the three transitions. However, the large diffusion of the molecules enhanced by the increment of the area per molecule may induce the second transition.
This paper presents a numerical analysis of the lubrication characteristics of condensed water molecules on a solid surface by conducting molecular dynamics simulations. We examine two models consisting of a simple hexahedral substrate with and without water molecules to reveal the lubrication mechanism of mono-layered water molecules. We perform a sliding simulation by contacting and translating a single asperity on the substrate under various normal loads. During the simulation, we measure the friction coefficient and atomic stress. When water molecules were interleaved between solid surfaces, atomic stress exerted on individual atom and friction coefficient were smaller than those of model without water molecule. Particularly, at a low load, the efficacy of water molecules in the reduction of atomic stress and friction is remarkable. Conversely, at high loads, water molecules rarely lubricate solid surfaces and fail to effectively distribute the contact stress. We found a critical condition in which the lubrication regime changes and beyond the condition, significant plastic deformation was created. Consequently, we deduce that water molecules can distribute and reduce contact stress within a certain condition. The reduced contact stress prevents plastic deformation of the substrate and thus diminishes the mechanical interlocking between the asperity and the substrate.

Deposition conditions, surface morphology, and electrical properties of polyamic acid alkylamine salts (PAAS) Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films have been investigated through a study of surface pressure-area $\pi$-A isotherms, AFM (atomic force microscopy), and current-voltage characteristics. To obtain the optimum conditions of film deposition, the $\pi$-A isotherms were examined by varying temperature, barrier moving speed, dipping speed, spreading amount of solution etc. The Z-type LB films were made at the surface pressure of 5 mN m-1 and 25 mN m-1 for the AFM study; the former surface pressure forms the gas phase and the latter one forms the solid phase. The LB film made in the gas phase show domains with a size of about 200 A diameter and 70 A height. However, the LB films made in the solid phase show a very smooth surface with 2 A surface roughness. In the current-voltage characteristics measured along the perpendicular direction of the films, ohmic conduction has been observed below 105 V cm-1 and the calculated electrical conductivity is about 10-13 S cm-1. Nonohmic conduction has been observed above = 10-11 V cm and the conduction mechanism can be explained by the Schottky effect.
The tribological characteristics of the swash plate surface of a compressor which is for automobile were investigated. For surface treatments, PTFE and $MoS_2$ are used as a solid lubricant, together with copper alloy. Test condition is set considering actual driving condition. Wear testing is conducted using pin on disk type tester, and the coefficient of friction and the temperature on friction surface are measured. Also, to determine the wear patterns, cross-section of friction surface is analyzed by SEM(scanning electrode microscope). The $MoS_2$, both at dry and lubricated conditions, friction surface and the coefficient of friction maintained rather stable results. But, the PTFE, at oil less condition, sample resulted in rather unstable condition. In case of copper alloy, quite higher friction coefficients(higher than 0.1) were obtained at dry condition. At the temperature of $125^{\circ}C$, seizure has occurred.
Electron contamination due to the interaction between radiation beam and material was analyzed for the factors such as source-skin distance (SSD), field size, tray characteristics and position of filter, which can affect the surface dose in Cobalt teletherapy. Surface dose in open beam was more influenced by SSD with increasing field size. Relative surface charge (RSC) increased with the use of tray (solid, circular hole, slotted), compared with open beam, which is thought to be due to increased electron contamination of the tray. To reduce the surface dose, 0.4mm thick Lipowitz metal filter was used. Compared with open beam, RSC decreased by 8.8%, 11.3%, 13.3%, 16.6%, 19.3% and 21.7% for the field size of $5{\times}5$, $10{\times}10$, $15{\times}15$, $20{\times}20$, $25{\times}25$ and $30{\times}30cm^2$, respectively. On the contrary, use of Lipowitz metal filter increased RSC at 60cm or less SSD. Surface dose was effectively reduced with Lpowitz metal filter placed right below solid tray in Cobalt teletherapy.

This study is focused on the effect of sodium stearate, which is a hydrophilic gelling agent affecting on the hardness of O/W solid sunscreen cosmetic. The sunscreen of the O/W (oil in water) type is stable, good in use, and relatively easier to stabilize than the sunscreen of the W/O (water in oil) type. Methods for increasing the stability by using emulsifiers, electrolytes, and wax or oil have been studied for solid sunscreen. This study was intended to develop a solid sunscreen stabilized by increasing the hardness using sodium stearate as an O/W type containing more than 40% moisture. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to analyze the factors affecting the hardness of cosmetics, and sodium stearate, polyol and oil were used for each factor. The hardness and the reaction value was measured using a rheometer. As a result, sodium stearate showed a meaningful value (p < 0.05) among the three factors affecting hardness. In addition, the use of sodium stearate as a hydrophilic gelling agent increased the usability and stability of the solid sunscreen.

Heat transfer and solidification of liquid silicon in von-$K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ swirling flow is investigated. The moving boundary is fixed for all times by a coordinate transformation, and finite difference method Is used to obtain the instantaneous location of the solid-liquid Interface and the heat transfer from the surfaces of solid and liquid. For small Stefan number or low wall temperature, the transient heat transfer from the surface of solid(QS(t)) is much larger than that from the liquid side of solid-liquid interface(QL(t)) and QL(t) reaches its quasi-steady-state value much faster than QS(t).

On this study. Constructed the system detecting the reflective acoustic waves from the solid-samples using the 3MHZ focused-acoustic transducer and detected the V(Z) charateristics curves varied by the distance between the focusing position and the solid surface. The results of the experimental detection to various solid materials showed that the materials have their own unique shape of V(Z) curves. This paper suggested the possibility distinguishing the solid characteristics by analysing the V (Z) curves.

The problem of phase change from liquid to solid in the inviscid plane-stagnation flow is theoretically investigated. The solution at the initial stage of freezing is obtained by expanding it in powers of time, and the final equilibrium state is determined from the steady-state governing equations. The transient solution is dependent on the three dimensionless parameters, but the equilibrium state is determined by one parameter of (temperature ratio/conductivity ratio). The effect of the fluid flow on the growth rate of the solid in the pure conduction problem can be clearly seen from the solution of the initial stage and the final equilibrium state. The characteristics of the transient heat transfer at the surface of the solid and the liquid side of the solid-liquid interface for all the dimensionless parameters are elucidated.
