This paper describes a three dimensional parametric modeling system for transmission gears of tractor. In conventional design and manufacturing, information about three dimensional shapes has been described in engineering drawings. However drawing based design presents several problems; 1) communication errors between the designer and the modeller or manufacturer. 2) time taken and costs incurred in the design process. To solve these problems the system of parametric design based modeling has been proposed. Developed system in this paper consists of four steps; 1) parametric design of transmission gears with a solid modeler. 2) evaluation of gear geometry and strength. 3) dynamic simulation for gear interference check. 4) gear stress analysis with a CAE software. The proposed system has been tested in the fields and found to be a useful system.

The element-free Galerkin (EFG) method is one of meshless methods, which is an efficient method of modeling problems of fluid or solid mechanics with complex boundary shapes and large changes in boundary conditions. This paper discusses the theory of the EFG method and its applications to modeling of groundwater flow. In the EFG method, shape functions are constructed based on the moving least square (MLS) approximation, which requires only set of nodes. The EFG method can eliminate time-consuming mesh generation procedure with irregular shaped boundaries because it does not require any elements. The coupled EFG-FEM technique was introduced to treat Dirichlet boundary conditions. A computer code EFGG was developed and tested for the problems of steady-state and transient groundwater flow in homogeneous or heterogeneous aquifers. The accuracy of solutions by the EFG method was similar to that by the FEM. The EFG method has the advantages in convenient node generation and flexible boundary condition implementation.
Analysis of the internal state of the blast furnace is needed to predict and control the operating condition. Especially, it is important to develop modeling of blast furnace for predicting cohesive zone because shape of cohesive zone influences overall operating condition of blast furnace such as gas flow, chemical reactions and temperature. because many previous blast furnace models assumed cohesive zone to be fixed, they can't evaluate change of cohesive zone shape by operation condition such as PCR, blast condition, and production rate. In this study, an axi-symmetric 2-dimensional steady state model is proposed to simulate blast furnace process. In this model, cohesive zone is changed by solid temperature range, FVM is used for numerical simulation. To find location of cohesive zone whole calculation procedure is iterated Until cohesive zone is converged. Through this approach, shape of cohesive zone, velocity, composition and temperature within the furnace are predicted by model.

Developed in this research is a surface modeling kernel for various CAD/CAM applications. Its internal surface representations are rational parametric polynomials, which are generalizations of nonrational Bezier, Ferguson, Coons and NURBS surface, and are very fast in evaluation. The kernel is designed under the OOP concepts and coded in C++ on PCs. The present implementation of the kernel supports surface construction methods, such as point data interpolation, skinning, sweeping and blending. It also has NURBS conversion routines and offers the IGES and ZES format for geometric information exchange. It includes some geometric processing routines, such as surface/surface intersection, curve/surface intersection, curve projection and so forth. We are continuing to work with the kernel and eventually develop a B-Rep based solid modeler.

Various modeling techniques for ultrasonic wave propagation and scattering problems in finite solid media are presented. Elastodynamic boundary value problems in inhomogeneous multi-layered plate-like structures are set up for modal analysis of guided wave propagation and numerically solved to obtain dispersion curves which show propagation characteristics of guided waves. As a powerful modeling tool to overcome such numerical difficulties in wave scattering problems as the geometrical complexity and mode conversion, the Boundary Element Method(BEM) is introduced and is combined with the normal mode expansion technique to develop the hybrid BEM, an efficient technique for modeling multi-mode conversion of guided wave scattering problems.

A leaf spring plays an important role in a passenger bus. Since characteristic of a leaf spring has a hysteresis behaviour, modeling technique for a leaf spring is an important issue for passenger bus analysis. In this paper, modeling technique for a leaf spring is presented. First, non-linear FEM model of a leaf spring is constructed then it is used to make an approximated model to be used in dynamic analysis. The modeling procedure is ex-plained in step by step approach. Then, this model is applied to dynamic analysis of a mini-bus with flexible body and non-linear dynamic force element. The results are compared with test data.

For engineers in the industry, this study considers a reliable and practical finite element modeling technique to estimate the behavior of closed thin-walled members with spot weldings. Dynamic and static experiments confirm that the technique - modeling the spot weldings with solid elements which have the adjusted rotational freedoms and fill the welding space - Yields satisfactory results. Numerical studies on the double hat-shaped members. adopting this modeling technique. show the effect of the spot welding Pitch and the spot welding location in the flange on the stiffness of the members Using the principal stiffness and newly proposed GSPI(global stiffness performance index), we also carefully examine how the spot welding curvature, and sectional shape, etc.. synthetically influence the stiffness of a real excavator pillar in the field.

In CAD/CAM system, it is required to produce manufacturing information from the deawing output of design system. The most difficult task is to formulate 3-dimentional modeling information utilizing 2-dimentional data. This paper addresses the automatic converting steps of 2-dimentional drawing data to 3-dimentional solid modeling using feature recognition rules as an expert shell. With the standardization of design process and recognition rule as a fundamental steps, the developed system shows a good application tool which can interface the design and manufacturing stage in CAD/CAM system of PC level.
Adherence between reinforcement and the surrounding concrete is usually ignored in finite element analysis (FEA) of reinforced concrete (RC) members. However, load transition between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete effects RC members' behavior a great deal. In this study, the effects of bond-slip on the FEA of RC members are examined. In the analyses, three types of bond-slip modeling methods (perfect bond, contact elements and spring elements) and three types of reinforcement modeling methods (smeared, one dimensional line and three dimensional solid elements) were used. Bond-slip behavior between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete was simulated with cohesive zone materials (CZM) for the first time. The bond-slip relationship was identified experimentally using a beam bending test as suggested by RILEM. The results obtained from FEA were compared with the results of four RC beams that were tested experimentally. Results showed that, in FE analyses, because of the perfect bond occurrence between the reinforcement and surrounding concrete, unrealistic strains occurred in the longitudinal reinforcement. This situation greatly affected the load deflection relationship because the longitudinal reinforcements dominated the failure mode. In addition to the spring elements, the combination of a bonded contact option with CZM also gave closer results to the experimental models. However, modeling of the bond-slip relationship with a contact element was quite difficult and time consuming. Therefore bond-slip modeling is more suitable with spring elements.

Exhaust plume effects on longitudinal aerodynamics of missile were investigated by wind tunnel tests using a solid plume simulator and CFD analyses with both the solid plume and air jet plumes. Approximate plume boundary prediction technique was used to produce the outer shape of the solid plumer and chamber conditions and nozzle shapes of the air jet plumes were determined through plume modeling technique to compensate the difference in thermodynamic properties between air and real plume. From comparisons among turbulence models in case of external flow interaction with the air jet plume, Spalart-Allmaras model turned out to give accurate result and to be less grid-dependent. Effects induced by the plume were evaluated through the computations with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model and the air jet plume to account for various ratios of chamber and ambient pressure and Reynolds number under the flight test condition.
