  • Flexible energy-storage devices (FESDs) have been studied and developed extensively over the last few years because of demands in various fields. Since electrochemical performance and mechanical flexibility must be taken into account together, different framework from composition of conventional energy-storage devices (ESDs) is required. Numerous types of electrodes have been proposed to implement the FESDs. Herein, we review the works related to the FESDs so far and focus on free-standing electrodes and, especially substrate-based ones. The way to utilize carbon woven fabric (CF) or carbon cloth (CC) as flexible substrates is quite simple and intuitive. However, it is meaningful in the point of that the framework exploiting CF or CC can be extended to other applications resulting in multifunctional composites. Therefore, summary, which is on utilization of carbon-based material and conductive substrate containing CF and CC for ESDs, turns out to be helpful for other researchers to have crude concepts to get into energy-storage multi-functional composite. Moreover, polymer electrolytes are briefly explored as well because safety is one of the most important issues in FESDs and the electrolyte part mainly includes difficult obstacles to overcome. Lastly, we suggest some points that need to be further improved and studied for FESDs.

  • Among various fuel cells, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer the highest energy efficiency, when taking into account the thermal recycling of waste heat at high temperature. However, the highest efficiency and lowest pollution for a SOFC can be achieved through the sophisticated control of its constituent components such as electrodes, electrolytes, interconnects and sealing materials. The electrochemical conversion efficiency of a SOFC is particularly dependent upon the performance of its electrode materials. The electrode materials should meet highly stringent requirements to optimize cell performance. In particular, both mass and charge transport should easily occur simultaneously through the electrode structure. Matter transport or charge transport is critically related to the configuration and spatial disposition of the three constituent phases of a composite electrode, which are the ionic conducting phase, electronic conducting phase, and the pores. The current work places special emphasis on the quantification of this complex microstructure of composite electrodes. Digitized images are exploited in order to obtain the quantitative microstructural information, i.e., the size distributions and interconnectivities of each constituent component. This work reports regarding zirconia-based composite electrodes.

  • In this research, two thin film deposition techniques, Atomic Layer Deposition and Sputtering are carried out for the fabrication of Yittria Stabilized Zirconia electrolyte for thin film Solid Oxide Fuel Cell. Zirconium to Yittrium ratio for both cases is about 1/8. Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) image shows that the growth rate per hour for Atomic Layer Deposition is faster than for sputtering. X-ray Photo-electron Spectroscopy(XPS) shows that the peaks of both Zirconia and Yittria shift towards higher bending energy for the case of Atomic Layer deposition and thus are more strongly attached to the substrate. Later, Nyquist plot was used to compare the conductivity of Yittria Stabilized Electrolyte for both cases. The conductivity at $300^{\circ}C$ for Atomic Layer Deposited Yittria Stabilized Zirconia is found to be $5{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$ while that for sputtered Yittria Stabilized Zirconia is $2{\times}10^{-5}S/cm$ at the same temperature. The reason for better performance for Atomic Layered YSZ is believed to be the Nano-structured layer fabrication that aids in along the plane conduction as compared to the columnarly structured Sputtered YSZ.

  • Much research into fuel cells operating at a temperature below $800^{\circ}C$. is being performed. There are significant efforts to replace the yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte with a doped ceria electrolyte that has high ionic conductivity even at a lower temperature. Even if the doped ceria electrolyte has high ionic conductivity, it also shows high electronic conductivity in a reducing environment, therefore, when used as a solid electrolyte of a fuel cell, the powergeneration efficiency and mechanical properties of the fuel cell may be degraded. In this study, gadolinium-doped ceria nanopowder with $Al_2O_3$ and $Mn_2O_3$ as a reinforcing and electron trapping agents were synthesized by ultrasonic pyrolysis process. After firing, their microstructure and mechanical and electrical properties were investigated and compared with those of pure gadolinium-doped ceria specimen.

  • We have demonstrated new functionalities of Ag doped chalcogenide glasses based on their capabilities as solid electrolytes. Formation of such amorphous systems by the introduction of silver via photo-induced diffusion in thin chalcogenide films is considered. The influence of silver on the properties of the newly formed materials is regarded in terms of diffusion kinetics and Ag saturation is related to the composition of the hosting material. Silver saturated chalcogenide glasses have been used in the formation of solid electrolyte which is the active medium in programmable metallization cell (PMC) devices. In this paper, we investigated electrical and optical properties of Ag-doped chalcogenide thin film on changed thickness of Ag and chalcogenide thin films, which is concerned at Ag-doping effect of PMC cell. As a result, when thickness of Ag and chalcogenide thin film was 30nm and 50nm respectively, device have excellent characteristics.

  • Al and Nb-doped Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) and W-doped LLZO lithium ion conducting electrolyte samples were prepared and their H2O stability was investigated. The LLZO samples were exposed to 50% humidified air for 48 h. After H2O exposure, a cubic to tetragonal transformation occurred and acquired SEM images exhibited the presence of reaction phases at the grain boundaries of Al and Nb-LLZO. As a result, the lithium ion conductivity significantly decreased after H2O exposure. On the contrary, W-LLZO showed good stability against H2O. Although the cubic to tetragonal transformation was also observed in H2O-exposed W-LLZO, the decrease in lithium ion conductivity was found to be modest. No morphological changes of the W-LLZO samples were confirmed in the H2O-exposed W-LLZO samples.

  • The choice of solvents for electrolytes solutions is very important to improve the characteristics of charge/discharge in the Li-ion battery system. Such solvent systems have been widely investigated as electrolytes for Li-ion batteries. In this paper, the electrochemical properties of the solid electrolyte interphase film formed on carbon anode surface and the solvent decomposition voltage in 1 M LiPF6/EC:MA(x:y) electrolyte solutions prepared from the various mixing volume ratios are investigated by chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscopy. As a result, the solvent decomposition voltages are varied with the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte. Electrochemical properties of the passivation film were different, which are dependent on the mixture ratio of the solvents. Therefore, the most appropriate mixing ratio of EC and MA as a solvent in 1 M $LiPF_6/(EC+MA)$ system for Li-ion battery is approximately 1:3 (EC:MA, volume ratio).

  • The concepts used to explain specific phenomenon can be influenced by context or coherent regardless of context. The purpose of this study is to understand middle school students' concept of particles in particular context and to investigate the effects of context on concept of particles. A conceptual questionnaire was developed to find out how students represented particles in two contexts: solid and solution states of electrolytes, and ion precipitation reaction. The questionnaire was administered to $9^{th}$ grade students after classes of 'electrolyte and ions' unit. The responses of students were analyzed using framework developed for categorization of students' concepts. The results are as follows: First, it was found that students used various concepts on particles when they explained solid and solution state of electrolytes, respectively. Second, we identified students' concepts of particles used to explain ion precipitation reaction. In addition, we recognized that majority of students failed to write correct chemical symbols. Third, approximately 79% of students showed coherent responses for explanation of particles in solution state of both electrolytes and ion precipitation reaction. About 57% of students had scientific concepts. Some suggestions were made based on results for acquisition of scientific concepts on particles in different contexts.

  • Polyurethane was used as matrix for polymer electrolytes with liquid electrolyte consist of organic solvent as ethylene carbonate(EC), propylene carbonate(PC), and tetraethylene glycol dimethylether(TG) and 1M $LiCF_3SO_3$, which has high mechanical strength and porosity. Electrochemical properties fur polyurethane electrolytes with various liquid electrolytes were evaluated. The amount of immersed liquid electrolyte for TG with 1M $LiCF_3SO_3$ was increased to about $750\%$ by weight, and initial discharge capacity and cycle performance was better than others. Ionic conductivity for TG/EC(v/v,1:1) and PC/EC(v/v, 1:1) with 1M $LiCF_3SO_3$ was about $3.15\times10^{-3} S/cm, \;3.18\times10^{-3}S/cm$
