  • We report on the fabrication and photoelectrochemical(PEC) properties of a $Cu_2O$ thin film/ZnO nanorod array oxide p-n heterojunction structure with ZnO nanorods embedded in $Cu_2O$ thin film as an efficient photoelectrode for solar-driven water splitting. A vertically oriented n-type ZnO nanorod array was first prepared on an indium-tin-oxide-coated glass substrate via a seed-mediated hydrothermal synthesis method and then a p-type $Cu_2O$ thin film was directly electrodeposited onto the vertically oriented ZnO nanorods array to form an oxide semiconductor heterostructure. The crystalline phases and morphologies of the heterojunction materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy as well as Raman scattering. The PEC properties of the fabricated $Cu_2O/ZnO$ p-n heterojunction photoelectrode were evaluated by photocurrent conversion efficiency measurements under white light illumination. From the observed PEC current density versus voltage (J-V) behavior, the $Cu_2O/ZnO$ photoelectrode was found to exhibit a negligible dark current and high photocurrent density, e.g., $0.77mA/cm^2$ at 0.5 V vs $Hg/HgCl_2$ in a $1mM\;Na_2SO_4$ electrolyte, revealing an effective operation of the oxide heterostructure. In particular, a significant PEC performance was observed even at an applied bias of 0 V vs $Hg/HgCl_2$, which made the device self-powered. The observed PEC performance was attributed to some synergistic effect of the p-n bilayer heterostructure on the formation of a built-in potential, including the light absorption and separation processes of photoinduced charge carriers.

  • In this paper, we propose a prototype platform combined with the power management system using, as an auxiliary power storage device, a supercapacitor that can be fast charged and discharged with high power efficiency as well as semi-permanent charge and discharge cycle life. For the proposed platform, we designed a technique which is capable of detecting the state of power cutoff or resumption of power supplied from the solar panel in accordance with physical environment changes through an interrupt attached to the micro-controller was developed. To prevent data loss in a computing environment in which continuous power supply is not guaranteed, we implemented a low-level system software in the micro-controller to transfer program context and data in volatile memory to nonvolatile memory when power supply is cut off. Experimental results shows that supercapacitors effectively supply temporary power as auxiliary power storage devices. Various benchmarks also confirm that power state detection and transfer of program context and data from volatile memory to nonvolatile memory have low overhead.

  • An All-in-one LED lantern is a light device to determine the fairway of ships in operation. The current all-in-one LED lantern powered by solar energy is challenged by insufficient power capacity due to limited sun hours. This article presents an all-in-one 9-Nautical mile LED lantern driven by solar and wind power that is abundant maritime renewable energy. Furthermore, the remote smart monitoring system is developed. A smart control system capable of remote control of the lantern was implemented by using the LED lantern device and monitoring system as IoT. This technology that realtime condition monitoring and remote control are developed for safe ship navigation. We expect that maintaining the accuracy and consistency of LED lanterns prevents marine accidents and reduces social costs.

  • In this paper a micro solar energy harvesting system with MPPT(Maximum Power Point Tracking) control using a miniature PV(photovoltaic) cell of which the output is less than 0.5V is proposed. The MPPT control is implemented using linear relationship between the open-circuit voltage of a PV cell and its MPP(Maximum Power Point) voltage such that a pilot PV cell can track the MPP of the main PV cell in real time. The proposed circuit is designed in 0.18um CMOS process. The designed chip area is $900um{\times}1370um$ including a load charge pump and pads. Measured results show that the designed system can track the MPP voltage changes with variations of light intensity. The designed circuit with MPPT control delivers MPP voltages to load even though the load is heavy such that it can supply more power when the MPPT control is applied. The proposed circuit does not require any precharged battery resulting in more suitability for miniaturized self-powered systems compared to the existing works.

  • Visible light-activated photocatalysts (based on doped titania) are the subject of intensive current research due to the promise they offer in relation to solar powered systems for photocatalysis, hybrid systems for $CO_2$ conversion and hydrogen production from water. Current synthetic methodologies suffer from one or more serious shortcomings, which seriously hinder practical application. These include high cost, irreproducibility, difficulty in controlling the dopant level and unsuitability for scale up. In this review new reproducible and controllable methods (developed by Lambert group, Cambridge University) allowing the synthesis of practical quantities of efficient, visible light active anion (e.g. N, C and B) doped $TiO_2$ photocatalysts are summarized.

  • This study presents computational analyses for low-drag aerodynamic design that are applied to modify a long-endurance UAV. EAV-2 is a test-bed for a hybrid electric power system (fuel cell and solar cell) that was developed by the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) for use in future long-endurance UAVs. The computational investigation focuses on designing a wing with a reduced drag since this is the main contributor of the aerodynamic drag. The airfoil and wing aspect ratio of the least drag are defined, the fuselage configuration is modified, and raked wingtips are implemented to further reduce the profile and induced drag of EAV-2. The results indicate that the total drag was reduced by 54% relative to EAV-1, which was a small-sized version that was previously developed. In addition, static stabilities can be achieved in the longitudinal and lateral-directional by this low-drag configuration. A long-endurance flight test of 22 hours proves that the low-drag design for EAV-2 is effective and that the average power consumption is lower than the objective cruise powerof 200 Watts.

  • During feeding on algal cytoplasm, some sacoglossans are known to keep the chloroplasts photosynthetically active for days to months in their digestive cells. Korean sacoglossan mollusks containing functional chloroplasts were screened using an in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence measuring system (pulse amplitude modulation, PAM). We collected six sacoglossans feeding on siphonous and siphonocladous green algae (Elysia atroviridis, E. nigrocapitata, E. ornata, Ercolania boodleae, Placida dendritica, Stiliger sp.) and one feeding on ceramiaceaen algae (Stiliger berghi) and performed feeding experiments using 37 algal species. Three species of Elysia showed strong photosynthetic activity for months. However, P. dendritica maintained functional chloroplasts only for several hours after feeding. E. boodleae, S. berghi, and Stiliger sp. showed no photosynthetic activity in any circumstances. Among all species, E. nigrocapitata was capable to tolerate the longest period of starvation for over 4 months. Four 'solar powered' sacoglossans bonded avidly to their specific algal food. Each species attached to and consumed only one algal species when several algae were given together. While they occasionally consumed other algae after prolonged starvation, they always reverted to their specific algae when available.

  • Recently, the electric vehicles which are powered by such sources as battery, solar cell, fuel-cell, and so forth attract increasing attention. However, the unit cell voltages of these power sources are so low that a number of cells should be stacked in series to drive the vehicle inverter systems, which increases the complexity of the structure of power source. In this paper, a high-efficiency high-power boost converter for electric vehicle applications, which is able to convert a relatively low source voltage into a sufficiently high regulated DC link voltage, is proposed, and the design guidelines and the experimental results are presented.

  • The market for distributed power generation based on renewable energy is increasing, particularly for standalone mini-grid applications in developing countries with limited energy resources. Stand-alone power systems (SAPS) are of special interest combined with renewable energy design in areas not connected to the electric grid. Traditionally, such systems have been powered by diesel engine generator sets (DEGS), but also hybrid systems with photovoltaic and/or wind energy conversion systems (WECS) are becoming quite common nowadays. Hybrid energy systems can now be used to generate energy consumed in remote areas and stand-alone microgrids. This paper describes the design, simulation and feasibility study of a hybrid energy system for a stand-alone power system. A simulated model is developed to investigate the design and performance of stand-alone hydrogen renewable energy systems. The analysis presented here is based on transient system simulation program (TRNSYS) with realistic ventilation load of a large store. Design of a hybrid energy system is site specific and depends on the resources available and the load demand.
