  • The sols prepared by dialyzing solutions, in which the hydrolyzed precipitates of TEOT or directly Ti(OC3H7)4 were resolved, were the nanoparticulate sol with the average particle size less than 7 nm and the anatase crystal phase. In the pH range of 1.5 to 2.9, the particle size of the nanoparticulate TiO2 sols (0.09 mol/ι) increased gradually upto 15 nm~26nm with the increase of pH in the initial aging state but the sols were transparent all the time, and stable without growin any more after 30 days. When the slipcasted porous alumina tubes were coated by the sol-gel dipping method, the minimum particle size and the aging time for forming the coated gel layer at the given pH were optimized. For obtaining the very thin crack-free and reproducible membrane coating, the use of a nanoparticulate TiO2 sol (0.09 mol/ι) aged for about 30 dyas at pH=2.0 was found to be the best.

  • A catalyst with CuO ceramic filter for simultaneous treatment of dust and HAP was prepared and characterized. Catalytic ceramic filter can not only potentially achieve the substantial savings in energy but provide with effective optimization and integration of process for simultaneous removal of SO$_2$, NO$_{x}$ and particulates from flue gases. Catalytic ceramic filters remove simultaneously particulates on exterior surface of filters and reduce NO to $N_2$ and $H_2O$ by SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) process. Preparation of catalyst impregnated ceramic filter with disk shape (Ψ 50) follow the processing of alumino-silicate ceramic filter, support impregnation and catalyst impregnation (copper oxide). Preparation routes of alumino-silicate catalyst carrier suitable for production of catalytic filters practically were studied and developed using the sol-gel and colloidal processing, homogeneous precipitation and impregnation method. Characterization of the catalyst, catalyst carrier catalytic filter materials have been performed the using various techniques such as BET, XRD, TGA, SEM. Combination of the sol-gel and colloidal processing and impregnation method is recommended to prepare catalyst carriers economically for catalytic filter applications.s.

  • The improvement of preparation process of ${YBa_2}{Cu_3}{O_x}$ superconductor and its conducting properties is important for practical applications. In this study, the additives such as $Ag_{2}O$ and PbO were used to improve the preparation conditions of ${YBa_2}{Cu_3}{O_x}$ superconducting bulk samples and the properties of ${YBa_2}{Cu_3}{O_x}$ superconductors prepared with powders using sol-gel method and solid state reaction method were studied. The effects of the different powders and the additives to the density, grain alignment, and porosity of samples, that affect the critical current density of superconductor, also have been investigated. It is found that the properties of ${YBa_2}{Cu_3}{O_x}$ prepared with sol-gel synthesized powder and the additives showed better superconductivities than those of conventionally prepared superconductors.

  • To control the pore size of silcia gel, formamide (FA), N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) were added in the sol-gel process from starting solution with tetramethyl orthosilicate (TMOS). The gels were characterized using porosimeter, TG-DTA and SEM. As a result, the more contents of FA and PAA was increased the more gelation time was decreased, also the more contents of DMF and PEG was increased the more gelling time was increased. The mean pore size of gels was larger in the order of PAA, DMF, FA and PEG. And the mean pore size of porous silica glass was 59.0$\AA$, 31.5$\AA$, 29.9$\AA$ and 29.0$\AA$, respectively, heated at 75$0^{\circ}C$/100$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Transparent, crack-free dried gel monoliths with a composition of LiZr1.5Si2P2O12.5 have been synthesized by the low temperature polymerization of the Sol-Gel technique using metal alkoxides as starting materials. After initial reaction (20~40 min), each metal alkoxide closely paralleled each other during the hydrolysis reactions. The safe drying conditions of gels with no creaks the control of the shrinkage rate. The gels converted into the glass by heat treatment at 75$0^{\circ}C$. FTIR data indicated that the gels were phase separated into silicarich and phosphate-rich regions with the lithium. XRD results showed the formation of crystalline LiH2PO4. The gels dried at 15$0^{\circ}C$ or fired at 75$0^{\circ}C$ contained the residual water. The high ionic conductivity at room temperature for these gels was attributed to the motion of protons.

  • We describe the preparation of a manganese oxide polymorph in which the solid-pore architecture of the material is controllably varied. All MnO$_2$ gels derived from a KMnO$\_$4/-based sol-gel synthesis. The mesoporous structure of the initial gel is maintained by removingore fluid under conditions where the capillary forces that result fro extraction are either low or no existent. are either low or noexistent. Controlling both the pore and solid architecture on the nanoscale offers a strategy for the design of supercapacitor.

  • Inorganic polymer based hybrid membranes consisting of zirconium oxide and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) have been synthesized by sol-gel processes. The hybrid membranes showed thermal stability and flexibility up to $300^{\circ}C$. The membrane becomes proton conducting polymer electrolyte when added with 12-phosphotungstic acid (PWA). The conductivity of the membranes was measured in the temperature range from room temperature to $150^{\circ}C$ under saturated humidity and a maximum conductivity of $5{\times}10^{-5}\;Sm^{-1}$ was obtained at $150^{\circ}C$.

  • Crack-free hard coating siIica films were prepared by sol-gel processfrom twokinds of silicon alkoxide (tetra-ethoxysilane and methyltrimethoxysilane) and two kinds of alcohol (methanol and isopropyl alcohol) with an acid catalyst, acetic acid. A silicate framework of the precursor solution was investigated by infrared spectros-copy (IR) in the process of hydrolysis and condensation. Theextent of the condensation in the intermediates was elucidated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 29Si-NMR spectroscopy. The hard coating films werecharacterized by IR,scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and dif-ferential scanning calroimeter (DSC). The synthetic condition for the crack-free and transparent silica film for-mation was optimized interms of starting materials for the precursor solution as well as preparation method of the silica film.

  • There exist two interesting phenomena in making seafood products from surimi. When salted surimi is kept at a constant low temperature $(4\~40^{\circ}C)$, its rheological properties change from sol to gel, which is called 'setting'. Seafood processors can exploit changes that occur during setting in preparation of surimibased products, because heating at high temperatures, after the pre-heating during the setting process, enhances the gel-strength of salted surimi. Contrarily, when salted surimi or low-temperature set gel is heated at moderate temperatures $(50\~70^{\circ}C)$, a deterioration of gel is observed. The phenomenon is termed 'modori'. In the modori temperature range, heat-stable cysteine proteinases such as cathepsin B, H, Land L-Iike hydrolyze the myosins responsible for gel-formation, resulting in gel weakening modori. This article reviews molecular events occurring during gel setting that improve the quality of surimi-based products, and inhibition of modori by applying proteinase inhibitors. Application of recombinant protein technology to surimi-based products is introduced and its prospects for practical use are discussed.

  • It has been proposed that the Cao-$SiO_2$ binary system can be good basic composition of bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics. In the present study, various kinds of Cao-$SiO_2$ gels were prepared by sol-gel method in order to control the microstructure which are related to their dissolution rate, induction period of apatite formation in body environment. Characterization of the gels were done by wet chemical analysis, SEM observation, FT-IR spectroscopy and XRD. The gelation time decreased with CaO content. However, the volume of all the dried gel decreased to 50% of the wet gels irrespective of increasement of CaO content. All the Cao-$SiO_2$ gels were amorphous and contained a large amount of silanol groups on their surfaces after heat treatment up to $800^{\circ}C$. The interconnected structure of the gel changed to agglomerated spherical powders when Ca content exceed to 20 mol%. Most of the Cao-$SiO_2$ gel showed amorphous when heat-treated up to $900^{\circ}C$. However, quartz and cristobalite was produced when heat-treated at $1000^{\circ}C$ and resultant microstructure of the gel contained microporous structure.
