The guideline of selection of Integrated Management Practices (IMPs), such as wood, green roof, lawn, and porous pavement, for Low Impact Development (LID) design was proposed by ranking the reduction rate of surface runoff using LIDMOD1.0. Based on the guideline, LID was designed with several scenarios at two apartment complexes located at Songpa-gu, Seoul, Korea, and the effect of LID on surface runoff was evaluated during last 10 years. The effect of runoff reduction of IMP by land use change was highly dependent on the kind of hydrologic soil group. The wood planting is the best IMPs for reduction of surfac runoff for all hydrologic soil groups. Lawn planting is an excellent IMP for hydrologic soil group A, but reduction rate is low where soil doesn't effectively drains precipitation. The green roof shows constant reduction rate of surface runoff because it is not influenced by hydrologic soil group. Compared to the rate of other IMPs, the green roof is less effect the surface runoff reduction for hydrologic soil group A and is more effect for hydrologic soil group C and D followed to planing wood. The porous pavement for the impervious area is IMPs which is last selected for LID design because of the lowest reduction rate for all hydrologic soil group. As a result of LID application at study areas, we could conclude that the first step of the strategy of LID design at apartment complex is precuring pervious land as many area as possible, second step is selecting the kind of plant as more interception and evapotranspiration as possible, last step is replacing impervious land with porous pavement.

This study was carried out to find out effect of by-product gypsum on reducing soil erosion at the sloping burned area at Sampo-ri, Gosung-gun in Kangwon-province during the period between June 28 and Sept. 30, 2000. Four experimental plots ($1.2m{\times}10m$) were prepared at the study area with slopes $15^{\circ}{\sim}18^{\circ}$ where forest fire took place twice during last 4 years. Phosphogypsum (PG) was applied to the soils of the 4 plots at the rates of 0 (control), 5, 7.5, and 10 ton/ha, respectively. Amount of rainfall, runoff, and soil loss were measured 7 times during the study. In the beginning, the amounts of runoff and soil loss from the PG treated plots were not different from those from the control plot due to steepness of the plots. However, the difference between the amount of runoff and soil loss from the PG treated plots and those from the control became apparent over time. The effect of PG treatment lasted until at least 870 mm of rainfall. Compared to the cumulative runoff from the control plot, the cumulative runoff from the plots treated with 5, 7.5, and 10 ton/ha PG decreased 7%, 31 %, and 35%, respectively. The cumulative soil loss from the plots treated with 5, 7.5, and 10 ton/ha PG decreased 44%, 53%, and 77% compared to that from the control plot. Strong acidity of PG (pH 2.0~2.5) did not affect the acidity of the soil and runoff.
Soil loss into stream and river by runoff shall be considered for non-point source pollution management as national land conservation. The purpose of this study was to develop the mathematical equation to predict soil loss from inclined uplands of maize cultivation due to the runoff by rainfall which mainly converges on July and August. Soil loss was concentrated on May because of low canopy over an entire field in 2002 and on June and July because of heavy rainfall in 2003. By regression analysis the relation between runoff and soil loss can be represented by a linear equation of y =1.5291x - 3.4933, where y is runoff ($Mg\;ha^{-1}$) and x is soil loss ($kg\;ha^{-1}$). The determination coefficient of this equation was 0.839 (P<0.001). Therefore, the mathematical equation derived from the practical experiment at the inclined upland can be applicable to predict soil loss accompanied by runoff due to periodic rainfall converging on short periods within a couple of months.
Runoff of phorate, soil insecticide, were measured under simulated rainfall conditions in field using small test plot$(120\;cm{\times}120\;cm)$ at the loam area and loamy sand area. Fish acute toxicity tests were performed with runoff water to elucidate its toxicological effect on organisms in ecosystem. The average concentrations of phorate in runoff water from loam and loamy sand soil were 11.3 ppb and 4.8 ppb, respectively. However, there was no significant concentration difference between the heavy and the light rain. With loam soil, average runoff rates were 1.31 and 0.18%, while with loamy sand soil those were 0.48 and 0.012% under the heavy and the light rain conditions, respectively. Total average runoff rate was 0.50%. With killifish, no mortality was observed in runoff water from loamy sand soil, whereas half of the population was dead in runoff water from loam soil when it was diluted to 54.4% content.
Soil loss is one of the significant disasters which have threatened human community and ecosystem. Particularly, Korea has high vulnerability of soil loss because rainfall is concentrated during summer and mountainous regions take more than 70% of total land resources. Accordingly, the sediment control management plan are required to prevent the loss of soil resources and to improve water quality in the receiving waterbodies. In this regard, the objectives of this study are 1) to quantify the effect of the Vegetative Filter Strip (VFS) on sediment runoff reduction and 2) to analyze the relationship of rainfall intensity and sediment runoff. For this, SATEEC and VFSMOD were used to estimate sediment runoff according to rainfall intensity and to quantify the effect of VFS on sediment runoff reduction, respectively. In this study, the VFS has higher impact on sediment reduction for lower maximum rainfall intensity, which means that the maximum rainfall intensity is one of significant factors to control sediment runoff. Also, the sediment with VFS considered was highly correlated with maximum rainfall intensity. For these results, this study will contribute to extend the applicability of VFS in establishing eco-friendly sediment control plans.
Using artificial rainfall simulator, the soil loss, which is deemed as the most cause of muddy water problem among Non-point source (NPS) pollutant, was studied by the analysis of direct runoff, groundwater discharge, and soil water storage properties concerned with rainfall intensity, slope of area, and land cover. The direct runoff showed increasing tendency in both straw covered and bared soil as slope increases from 5% to 20%. The direct runoff volume from straw covered surface were much lower than bared surface. The infiltration capacity of straw covered surface increased, because the surface sealing by fine material of soil surface didn't occur due to the straw covering. Under the same rainfall intensity and slope condition, 2.4~8.2 times of sediment yield were occurred from bared surface more than straw covered surface. The volume of infiltration increased due to straw cover and the direct runoff flow decreased with decrease of tractive force in surface. To understand the relationship of the rate of direct runoff, groundwater discharge, and soil water storage by the rainfall intensity, slope, and land cover, the statistical test was performed. It shows good relationship between most of factors, except between the rate of groundwater storage and rainfall intensity.

This manuscript covers the results of field investigation and lab-scale experiments to design a double-layered biofilter system to control urban storm runoff. The biofilter system consisted of a coarse soil layer (CSL) for filtration and fine soil layer (FSL) for adsorption and biological degradation. The variations of flow rate and water quality of runoff from a local expressway were monitored for seven storm events. Laboratory column experiments were performed using seven kinds of soil and mulch to maximize pollutants removal. The site mean concentration (SMC) of storm runoff from the drainage area (runoff coefficient: 0.92) was measured to be 203 mg/L for SS, 307 mg/L for $TCOD_{Cr}$, 12.3 mg/L for TN, 7.3 mg/L for ${NH_4}^+-N$, and 0.79 mg/L for TP, respectively. This study employed a new design concept, to cover the maximum rainfall intensity with one month recurrence interval. Effective storms for last ten years (1998-2007) in seoul suggested the design rainfull intensity to be 8.8 mm/hr Single layer soil column showed the maximum removal rate of pollutants load when the uniformity coefficient of CSL was 1.58 and the silt/clay contents of FSL was virtually 7%. The removal efficiency during operation of double layer soil column was 98% for SS and turbidity, 75% for TCODCr, 56% for ${NH_4}^+-N$, 87% for TP, and 73-91% for heavy metals. The hydraulic conductivity of the soil column, 0.023 cm/sec, suggested that the surface area of the biofilter system should be about 1% of the drainage area to treat the rainfall intensity of one month recurrence interval.
A field study was conducted to determine the runoff loss of N and P in small scale of red pepper field plots (10% slope), consisting of three different plots with black polyethylene vinyl mulching (mulching), ridge without mulching (ridge), and flat without ridge and mulching (flat). Composted manure and urea as a basal application were applied at rates of $20MT\;ha^{-1}$ and $93kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Urea at $189kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ and fused phosphate at $67kg\;P_2O_5\;ha^{-1}$ were additionally applied on June 25 with different fertilization methods, broadcast application in flat plot and hole injection in ridge and mulching plots. Plant uptake of N and P was positively correlated with their respective concentrations in surface soil: mulching > ridge > flat plots. The runoff loss by soil erosion was higher in flat plot than ridge and mulching plot with contour line. Nitrate loss by the runoff water had no significant differences among three surface management practices, but the higher average value in ridge and mulching plots than flat plot. Especially, the flat plot had no phosphate loss during summer season. This is probably due to low labile P content in surface soil of flat plot. In the summation of soil and water loss, flat plot was higher in N and P loss than ridge and mulching plot with contour line. Nevertheless, the nitrate and phosphate loss by runoff water could be more important for non-point source management because the water could meet the river easier than eroded soil because of re-deposition around slope land.

To understand runoff Phenomena in Jeju island, some streams are monitored automatically about stream stage, and water quality in Jeju Provincial Water Resources Management Office. Rating curves for stream discharge are reviewed. Stream stages respond very quick to some rainfall events, and parameters influencing runoff phenomena such as landuse, soil condition, preconditoned rainfall, and vegetables will be studied. A few thousand to ten thousand ml/day are estimated from 6 permanent streams in Jeju island.
Soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) was simulated based on the default parameters and a priori soil parameter estimation method in Bocheong watershed of Korea. The performance of the model was tested against the measured daily runoff data for 5 years between 1993 and 1997. The sensitivity analysis of SWAT model parameters was conducted to identify the most sensitive model parameters affecting the model output. The results of SWAT simulation indicate that the overall performance of SWAT in calculating daily runoff is reasonably acceptable. However, there is a problem in estimating the low flow components of streamflow since the low flow components simulated by SWAT are significantly different from the measured low flow. The sensitivity analysis with SWAT points out that soil related parameters are the most sensitive parameters affecting surface and ground water balance components and groundwater flow related parameters exhibit negligible sensitivity.
