  • The cemented sand and gravel (CSG) method is a construction technique that adds cement and water to rock-like materials, such as rivered gravel or excavation muck which can be obtained easily at areas adjacent to dam sites. This study was performed to evaluate the compaction and compressive strength properties of stress-strain, elastic modulus and fracture mode CSG materials reinforced polypropylene fiber. Polypropylene fiber widely used for concrete reinforcement is randomly distributed into cemented sand. The two types of polypropylene fiber (monofillament and fibrillated fiber) were used and fiber fraction ratio was 0, 0.2 %, 0.4 %, 0.6 % and 0.8 % by the weight of total dry soil. The effect of fiber fraction ratio and fiber shape on compaction and compressive strength were investigated. The optimum moisture contents (OMC) of CSG material increased as fiber fraction increased and the dry density of CSG material decreased as fiber fraction. Also, the maximum increase in compressive strength was obtained at 0.4 % content of monofillament and fibrillated fiber. CSG material behaviour was controlled not only by fiber fraction but also fiber distribution, fiber shape and fiber type.

  • Application of anchored or strutted wall system for the earth retention of excavation works in a populated urban area or a poor soil deposit can be limited due to various restrictions. Since the strut becomes longer in a wide excavation site, the stability of an earth retaining wall is decreased, the wall deformation is increased, and the ground settlement is also increased due to an increased buckling or bending deformation of struts. Especially, in a populated urban area, the installation of anchors can be problematic due to the property line of adjacent structures or facilities. Thus, a new concept of earth retaining system like Self-Supported diaphragm Wall can solve several problems expected to occur during excavation in the urban area. In this study, Numerical analyses of counterfort diaphragm wall was introduced and the monitored data from the site was compared with the original results of numerical analyses. Also, in the case of the deep excavation applied the counterfort diaphragm wall, numerical analyses was performed to predict the wall deformation and the reinforcement to reduce the wall deformation was suggested.

  • Jeoksimto which was build up as the reinforcement establishment made with the soil under the cornerstone in the site of tile-capped building is the representative construction technique which become popular in the Sabi capital era after the Wungjin capital era. Especially from the fact that no site of tile-capped building with this Jeoksimto has been found in the Silla area, we can see the originality Baekje technique. We can analogize the specialization of Josagong (造寺工) (craftsman building the temple) and the diversity of technique, on the basis of the technique raising the ground level which is different with the middle gate site of Neung-sa and the Hall enshrining Buddha site in Buyeo. Moreover, we can have the confidence the dispatch of craftsman and the transmission of building technique from the Buyeo area to the Iksan area through the fact that the construction techniques of Jeoksimto in both area are almost the same. However the concerns in the construction archaeology are necessary because almost no study for Jeoksimto has been conducted and the term of Jeoksimto also is unfamiliar even if excavation of Baekje Jeoksimto in the several remains.

  • The effects of various forces acting on concrete pole are analyzed using finite element method how the forces affect on ground displacement. The soil types, wind load location of anchor block embedded depth of pole, and distance between poles are varied to find out effects on lateral displacement. Anchor block is effective when it is located at 1/4 of embedded depth The displacement is decreases as elastic modulus increases. Concrete reinforcement for loosened ground is necessary for double poles because double poles cause large excavation. When embedded depth ratio decrease, lateral displacement increase as closer to ground surface. Large embedded depth is effective to reduce lateral displacement, and the distance between poles is not much large factor.

  • Displacement caused by tunneling is difficult to predict since it is affected by many factors such as ground condition, excavation method and supplementary method of reinforcement. In this study, horizontal inclinometer was employed to monitor ground settlements above a tunnel face before and after the excavation. Monitoring results were analyzed to predict the preceding displacement and settlement of the surface structures. The result of the analysis can be used to establish a proper counter measure which keeps the serviceability of the surface structures. Based on the analysis of the monitoring result, ground properties of the site were deduced and the influence of the tunnel excavation on the settlement of the foundation above the tunnel is analyzed.

  • Environmental impact of waste tires as gound-reinforcing material is studied. Analysis for chemical compounds and toxic effect were performed on effluents from twelve lysimeters in which waste tires were mixed with sand and three initially different environmental solutions of acidic, neutral, and basic circulated through the mixture. The test results of effluents collected from the lysimeters provided that the contaminant concentrations were lower than those of Korean drinking water standards for all the selected and tested metal elements. While iron concentration increased slightly with the exposure period, other metal concentrations decreased with the number of circulation times. From the comparison with previous investigations, the contaminant concentration decreased with the increase of tire size, i.e. increases with the increase of the exposed surface of tire metals. From the toxicity tests, no deteriorative effect was observed and it could be concluded that waste tires are not biologically hostile materials.

  • A total of 104 laboratory model tests on a square footing subjected to eccentrically inclined loads supported by sand reinforced with randomly distributed polypropylene fibers were conducted in order to compare the results with those obtained from unreinforced sand and with each other. For conducting the model tests, uniform sand was compacted in a test box at one particular relative density of compaction. The effect of percentage of reinforcement used, thickness of the reinforced layer, angle of inclination of load to vertical and eccentricity of load applied on various prominent factors such as ultimate load, vertical settlement, horizontal deformation and tilt were investigated. An improvement in ultimate load, vertical settlement, horizontal deformation and tilt of foundation was observed with an increase in the percentage of fibers used and thickness of reinforced sand layer under different inclinations and eccentricities of load. A statistical model using non-linear regression analysis based on present experimental data for predicting the vertical settlement ($s_p$), horizontal deformation ($hd_p$) and tilt ($t_p$) of square footing on reinforced sand at any load applied was done where the dependent variable was predicted settlement ($s_p$), horizontal deformation ($hd_p$) and tilt ($t_p$) respectively.

  • Reinforcement cells are used to aid grass growth and taken together, this serves to extend greenery beyond the conventional spaces of lawns, tree pits, gardens, and parks, and is advantageous to urban cities since space for greening is often limited. Drought has variable effects on plant life and the resilience of turf to drought resistance also varies with species. Changes in photosynthetic ability were more pronounced for media rather than grass species. The media of sand without organic matter was found to be least suited for drought resistance. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and digital image analysis (DIA) data were generally in favour of Zoysia species as oppose to A. compressus. In A. compressus, selective traits such as, a more extensive root system and lower specific leaf area (SLA) were not an underlying factor that assisted this grass with enhanced drought resistance. Generally, WUE was found to be strongly related to plant characterises such as overall biomass, photosynthetic features as well as the lushness indexes, and specific leaf area. This study found a strong relationship between WUE and a suite of plant characteristics. These traits should serve as useful selection criteria for species with the ability to resist water stress.

  • Needs for underground space development and utilization have been increasing in urban area. The conventional strutting method in excavation is effective to restrain the ground movements and displacements of earth structures but inefficient for workers because of small working space. The conventional earth reinforcement methods such as earth-anchor and soil-nailing also have limitation to apply in urban area due to threats to stability of adjacent buildings around excavation boundaries. Recently, many types of earth retaining structures are being developed to overcome disadvantages of conventional excavation methods in urban area. In this study, a series of numerical analyses were performed with MIDAS GTS, geotechnical analysis program and MIDAS Civil, structural analysis design program to evaluate behavior and stability of the new type of non-supporting earth retaining structure, called Temporary Tower System (TTS), consisting of tower truss structures with much economical and spatial advantage.
