  • The development of both economical and consistent structure is strongly required for the whole reorganization of the railway network in Korea. Retaining wall is one of the major structures in the vicinity of the railway, which needs improving its external appearance and stability. Therefore, this study presents a new type of retaining wall, so called short-fiber composite reinforced retaining wall, as an alternative of retaining walls, which can be used for constructing the slope and roadbed soil structures. The results from real-scale test and dynamic numerical analysis for developed new one, which helps both the improvement of the external appearance and also the optimum use of the limited space near the railway, show excellent performance. On the basis of these results, it is judged that short-fiber composite reinforced retaining wall has the advantages of choosing the front wall freely and having a chance to use any low quality soil as backfill.

  • In this study, the centrifugal tests were performed to evaluate the behavior of reinforced retaining wall that allows the settlement of reinforcement strip. To analyze the stability of reinforced retaining wall, which drives the settlement of reinforcement strip, the results were compared with the conventional reinforced retaining wall. In the centrifugal tests, the aluminum plate for the face was used and the aluminum foil was used as a reinforcement. The decomposed granite soil was adopted as a backfill. As a result, the settlement free reinforced retaining wall reached to the failure at 80g-level. In contrast, the conventional reinforced retaining wall was collapsed at 69g-level. It means that the settlement free reinforced retaining wall has the stronger stability than the conventional reinforced retaining wall. Also, vertical earth pressure of the settlement free reinforced retaining wall near the base of wall was higher 16% than that of the conventional reinforced retaining wall.

  • This Paper presents the result of a parametric study on the behavior of stiffened grid reinforced segmental wall resting on non-yielding foundation. The parametric study was conducted using the nonlinear finite element analysis. In the finite element analysis, the step by step construction of the wall such as backfill, block reinforcement, block/backfill and soil/reinforcement interfaces were carefully modeled. The mechanical behavior of stiffened grid reinforced segmental walls was then investigated based on the result of analysis with emphasis on the effect of reinforcement stiffness on the behavior of the wall. The results of analysis indicate that the horizontal wall displacement decrease; with increasing the reinforcement stiffness at a decreasing rate, and that the horizontal stress at the back of the reinforced soil block does not much vary with the reinforcement stiffness. It is also revealed that the calculated maximum vertical stress at the base of the reinforced soil block agrees well with that based on the Meyerhof distribution and that the reinforcement and the connection force are considerably smaller than what might be expected based on the current design assumptions. The implications of the findings from this study to current design approaches were discussed in detail.

  • This paper is concerned with the numerical evaluation of the failure behavior of reinforced soil walls based on the elasto-plastic theory. At first, the basic analysis on the failure behavior of reinforced soil walls are discussed. Parametric study of the major factors influencing the failure behavior is conducted by FEM. The objectives are to identify and evaluate the major facts influencing the failure mode of reinforced soil walls. The results of the parametric study on the failure behavior due to soil friction angle, reinforcement type, and reinforecement length are analysed.

  • The use of reinforced soil have been increased due to it's cost effectiveness, flexibility and so on. In this study, a full-scale reinforced soil with rigid facing were constructed to investigate the soil pressure variation of reinforcing system. The results of soil pressure during backfill construction are described. The influence of facing stiffness on soil pressure is addressed. The results show that lateral earth pressures on the wall are active state during backfill. It is obtained that the lateral soil pressure highly depends on the installation condition of pressure cell and construction condition. Long-term measurement will be followed to verify the design assumptions with respect to the distribution of lateral stress on the facing.

  • A soil wall reinforced by soil nailing is excavated in the typical soil conditions which are consisted of weathered soil, weathered rock and soft rock. The resulting nail loads computed are compared to loads measured by utilizing strain gauges during construction. The wall deflection at two locations are related to construction events and specific soil conditions, providing an understanding of the behavior of soil nailed walls. The load distribution along the nail indicated relatively high loads close to the wall. The mobilized load on the nail is proportional to the wall deflection showing the maximum value at the surface of the wall. The construction monitoring for this project provided valuable information in understanding the behavior of soil nailed walls.

  • This paper presents the slope wall technique using soil improvement material for reinforced soil slope through laboratory scale model tests, and verifies the experimental results comparing with numerical analysis. In additional, case study in field has performed to investigate the deformation of reinforced soil slope for 6 months. As a result of laboratory scale model test, numerical analysis, and case study, the reinforcement effect of the slope wall technique using soil improvement material is sufficient to be constructed as reinforced soil slope. The technique shows the stable ratio (0.4%) of horizontal to vertical deformation in the surface loading.

  • The use of reinforced soil walls has grown significantly over the last few decades due to their ease construction and economical efficiency. Many damage cases of the reinforced soil walls have been reported as the use of reinforced soil walls increases. Inappropriate design and construction management mainly induce these problems. This paper describes case study on two damaged geogrid reinforced soil walls. The causes of the damage are investigated through the site investigations and proper countermeasures are proposed.

  • This paper presents the results of instrumentation of a two-level of soil-reinforced segmental retaining wall. Instrumentation items include the lateral wall displacements and the geogrid strains at several locations. The instrumentation is still long carried in order to examine long-term behavior. The result indicate that the upper wall has a significant effect on the behavior of the lower wall doubling the wall moved. The wall also exhibits significant post-construction movements that had ceased several months after the wall completed. The implication of the findings from this study was discussed in great detail.
