  • This study is to assess the future potential impact of climate change on stream water quality for a 6,581.1 km$^2$ dam watershed using SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model. The ECHAM5-OM climate data of IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) A2, A1B, and B1 emission scenarios were adopted and the future data (2007-2099) were corrected using 30 years (1977-2006, baseline period) weather data and downscaled by Change Factor (CF) method. After model calibration and validation using 6 years (1998-2003) observed daily streamflow and monthly water quality (SS, T-N, and T-P) data, the future (2020s, 2050s and 2080s) hydrological behavior and stream water quality were projected.

  • Characteristics of water quantity and quality of the Anyangcheon were analyzed through many field measurements and the distributed hydrologic simulation model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Event mean concentrations (EMCs) and baseflow mean concentrations were calculated from the data and the daily runoff were simulated by SWAT. The runoff was divided into the direct runoff and the baseflow. Using those values and quantity and quality data of release from the wastewater treatment plant (WWPT), unit loads of BOD, COD, SS, $NO_2-N$, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, and Dis-P were derived. EMCs of BOD and SS were even higher than the baseflow mean concentrations. The total runoff from October to April (7 months) of 2004 was just 13.5%, since the rainfall usually is concentrated in summer season. Futhermore BOD and SS were loaded during the event by 50.9% and 70.9%, respectively and over three quarters of total COD, $NO_2-N$, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, and Dis-P were flowed into the Anyangcheon during the remaining period. Therefore, the efficiency of WWPT for COD, $NO_2-N$, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, and Dis-P should be intensified from Oct. to Apr. and the runoff quality management of BOD and SS should be planned during the summer season.

  • There has recently been an increasing interest of the watershed management as a solution to a wide range of problems related water environment, therefore this study attempted to construct the environment information system to monitor the Geumho River watershed, and to evaluate the impacts of the watershed characteristics on stream water quality. A detailed GIS database to analyze the environmental characteristics at the subwatershed units, including 1:25,000 scale topographical maps, detailed soil maps, land use, 10m-resolution DEMs, roads, streams, vegetation index(NDVI) calculated from Landsat TM imagery, rainfall, and soil loss using RUSLE, is compiled for the study area. The set of variables representing watershed urbanization or industrialization, residential and commercial landuse, industrial landuse, and road area have significantly negative(-) relationship with water quality variables(BOD, COD, SS, T-N, T-P). On the other hand, watershed indicators related to natural environmental conditions, forest cover and vegetation index(NDVI) in each subwatershed were significantly positive(+) relationship with water quality. Three other variables, agricultural landuse, amount of fertilizer and pesticides, and potential soil loss, were not significant in explaining the correlations between watershed environment and stream water quality.

  • In soil and sediment environment, microorganisms play major roles in biochemical cycles of ecological significant elements. Because of its ecological significance, microbial diversity and community structure information are useful as indexes for assessing the quality of subsurface ecological environment and bioremediation. To achieve more accurate assessment, it is requested to gain sufficient yield and purity of DNA extracted from various soil and sediment samples. Although there have been a large number of basic researches regarding soil and sediment DNA extraction methods, little guideline information is given in literature when choosing optimal DNA extraction methods for various purposes such as environmental ecology impact assessment and bioremediation capability evaluation. In this study, we performed a thorough literature review to compare the characteristics of the current DNA extraction methods from soil and sediment samples, and discussed about considerations when selecting and applying DNA extraction methods for environmental impact assessment and bioremediation capability evaluation. This review suggested that one approach is not enough to gain the suitable quantity and yield of DNA for assessing microbial diversity, community structure and population dynamics, and that a careful attention has to be paid for selecting an optimal method for individual environmental purpose.

  • Liquid manure fertilizer drived from pig slurry is a valuable source of nutrients for crop production. However, there is no study for environmental assessment regarding microbial quality to apply liquid manure fertilizer. Therefore, this study aimed at quantifying the level of environmental impact on fecal coliform (Escherichia coli or E. coli ) survival in saturated soil such as paddy field. Surface water samples were collected up to 168 and 11 hours under natural sunlight and artificial ultraviolet radiation, respectively. The inactivation rate of E. coli under natural sunlight increased gradually after 48 hours. However, the inactivation rate of E. coli under artificial ultraviolet radiation increased linearly over time. Our findings suggested that the ultraviolet radiation is the limited factor on E. coli survival in surface water of saturated soil. This result will provide useful and practical guideline to applicators of agricultural soil in deciding appropriate handling and time frames for preventing pollution of water quality for sustainable agriculture.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess the future hydrological and water quality change of Man-gyeong river basin (1,602 ㎢) based on future extreme climate change scenarios and reduction of inter-basin water transfer amount using SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool). The SWAT was calibrated (2012~2014) and validated (2016~2018) at 2 water level observation stations (DC, JJ) and 2 water quality observation stations (SR, GJ) considering inter-basin water transfer amount, stream water withdrawal, and point source data. For the streamflow, the coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.70 and the average Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) was 0.51 respectively. For the water quality of SS, T-N, and T-P, the R2 was 0.72, 0.80 and 0.72 respectively. The future average streamflow under climate change scenarios increased up to 459 mm/yr, and average SS, T-N and T-P yields also increased up to 19,548 ton/yr, 68,748 kg/yr, and 13,728 kg/yr respectively. When the amount of inter basin water transfer decreased, the streamflow especially decreased in spring and winter periods, and the future water quality yields increased under the influence of precipitation. In order to solve the deterioration of water quality due to decrease in the flow rate and an increase in the load, the amount of inter basin water transfer should be maintained to a certain level.

  • The development of land classification and soil productivity rating systems (SPR) are examined for their application to valuation of agricultural land in South Dakota, USA. For current and impending environmental and agricultural land issues, there is virtually no hard data available. Therefore, the study works with government and private sector clients to identify needs, and develop and apply a variety of techniques to mine data and carry out appropriate assessment methods. The application of SPR data to land valuation work conducted by real estate appraisers, tax assessors, and economists are discussed along with an assessment of its benefits and limitations. However, the actual value of the agricultural land can be determined by fulfilling the agricultural's vision of protecting and improving the environment by agricultural activities besides the safe food production. Therefore, it is increasingly important that we understand the impacts of farming and forestry on land, water and air.

  • This study assessed the efficiency of reducing soil erosion and suspended sediment through the restoration of alpine unauthorized and illegally cultivated fields, using the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model in the Mandae District. The results showed that in Scenario 5, which involved restoring unauthorized and illegal fields within forests, along rivers (banks), and in ditch areas were restored to their original land categories, achieved the highest efficiency in reducing average annual soil erosion and suspended sediment, with reductions of 8.1% and 4.5%, respectively. In particular, it was confirmed that the restoration of unauthorized and illegal fields within forested areas has a significant impact. This demonstrated that the restoration of unauthorized and illegal agricultural fields can substantially reduce the soil erosion and suspended sediment attributable to non-point source pollution. Our findings highlight the importance of managing these unauthorized and illegal agricultural activities in developing sustainable strategies within non-point source pollution management areas. This study is expected to provide important basic data to effectively establish water quality improvement strategies in the region of non-point source pollution management.

  • There is increased soil erosion potential at highland agricultural crop fields because of its topographic characteristics and site-specific agricultural management practices performed at these areas. The agricultural upland fields are usually located at the sloping areas, resulting in higher soil loss, pesticides, and nutrients in case of torrential rainfall events or typhoon, such as 2002 Rusa and 2003 MaeMi. At the highland agricultural fields, the soil reconditioning have been performed every year to decrease damage by continuous cropping and pests. Also it has been done to increase crop productivity and soil fertility. The increased amounts of soil used for soil reconditioning are increasing over the years, causing significant impacts on water quality at the receiving water bodies. In this study, the field investigation was done to check soil reconditioning status for potato, carrot, and cabbage at the Doam-dam watershed. With these data obtained from the field investigation, the Soil and Water Assesment Tool (SWAT) model was used to simulate the soil loss reduction with environment-friendly and agronomically enough soil reconditioning. The average soil reconditioning depth for potato was 34.3 cm, 48.3 cm for carrot, and 31.2 cm for cabbage at the Doam-dam watershed. These data were used for SWAT model runs. Before the SWAT simulation, the SWAT ArcView GIS Patch, developed by the Kangwon National University, was applied because of proper simulation of soil erosion and sediment yield at the sloping watershed, such as the Doam-dam watershed. With this patch applied, the Coefficient of Determination ($R^2$) value was 0.85 and the Nash-Sutcliffe Model Efficiency (EI) was 0.75 for flow calibration. The $R^2$ value was 0.87 and the EI was 0.85 for flow validation. For sediment simulation, the $R^2$ value was 0.91 and the EI was 0.70, indicating the SWAT model predicts the soil erosion processes and sediment yield at the Doam-dam watershed. With the calibrated and validated SWAT for the Doam-dam watershed, the soil erosion reduction was investigated for potato, carrot, and cabbage. For potato, around 19.3 cm of soil were over applied to the agricultural field, causing 146% of more soil erosion rate, approximately 33.3 cm, causing 146% of more soil erosion for carrot, and approximately 16.2 cm, causing 44% of more soil erosion. The results obtained in this study showed that excessive soil reconditioning are performed at the highland agricultural fields, causing severe muddy water issues and water quality degradation at the Doam-water watershed. The results can be used to develop soil reconditioning standard policy for various crops at the highland agricultural fields, without causing problems agronomically and environmentally.
