To understand the properties of soil in Dokdo, we collected soil samples from 12 locations on Seodo and 23 locations on Dongdo, in Dokdo of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province in 2007-2008 and analyzed the soil's physical and chemical characteristics. Sand comprises the largest component (49.37%) of Dokdo soil, followed by silt (40.70%) and clay (9.93%). The soil structure consists mostly of sand loam, followed by loam and silt loam. The pH level of soils from Dokdo varied dramatically among sampling sites and seasons, ranging from 3.36 to 8.02. The total ion content of Dokdo soil also varies greatly among survey places and periods, but in general the total ion content was high in summer when vegetation develops, and low in spring. The exchangeable cation contents of the soil showed low levels in samples where the soil pH was low, including habitats dominated by Agropyron tsukushiense var. transiens and Echinochloa crus-galli, whereas the exchangeable cation contents were high where the organic contents were high, as in habitats dominated by Liriope platyphylla and Artemisia japonica subsp. littoricola. Soil N contents varied greatly among survey sites and higher N contents were found in soil inhabited by Chenopodiaceous plants than in habitats inhabited by other plants. The substantial differences in phosphorus contents among sites were related to excrement of black-tailed gulls. To understand the basic physical and chemical features of the soil on Dokdo, it will be necessary to conduct seasonal and long-term research on soil pH, ion contents, organic contents, N and P, as well as obtaining precise data from samples collected at different depths.

PFA(Paper Fly Ash) are reclaimed mainly or used in cement industry field as mixture agent in terms of materials recycling. Recently, research for recycling PFA as embankment materials or soil stabilization agent are undergoing in geotechnical engineering field. In this study, physical characteristics of PFA stabilization agent-soil admixtures are examined in change of water content, void ratio, consistency, grain distribution, specific gravity and density. Futhermore, the physical characteristics are compared with unconfined strength as engineering characteristics. Test results showed that unconfined strength and density are increased with increasing of PFA stabilization agent mixed ratio. On the other hand, specific gravity, void ratio and water content are decreased with increasing of PFA stabilization agent mixed ratio. It would be concluded that natural high water content ratio weak soil could be highly improved engineering and physical characteristics with PFA stabilization agent

Carbon dioxide is one of the major driving forces causing climate changes, and many countries have been trying to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from various sources. Soil stores more carbon dioxide(two to three times) amounts than atmosphere indicating that soil organic carbon emission management are a pivotal issue. In this study, we developed a Soil Organic Carbon(SOC) storage estimation model to predict SOC storage amounts in soils. Also, SOC storage values were assessed based on the carbon emission price provided from Republic Of Korea(ROK). Here, the SOC model calculated the soil hydraulic properties based on the soil physical and chemical information. Base on the calculated the soil hydraulic properties and the soil physical chemical information, SOC storage amounts were estimated. In validation, the estimated SOC storage amounts were 486,696 tons($3.526kg/m^2$) in Jindo-gun and shown similarly compared to the previous literature review. These results supported the robustness of our SOC model in estimating SOC storage amounts. The total SOC storage amount in ROK was 305 Mt, and the SOC amount at Gyeongsangbuk-do were relatively higher than other regions. But the SOC storage amount(per unit) was highest in Jeju island indicating that volcanic ashes might influence on the relatively higher SOC amount. Based on these results, the SOC storage value was shown as 8.4 trillion won in ROK. Even though our SOC model was not fully validated due to lacks of measured SOC data, our approach can be useful for policy-makers in reducing soil organic carbon emission from soils against climate changes.
It is necessary to assess soil physical properties and crop growth treated by compaction to establish the soil management standard. This study evaluated the bulk density, strength and crop growth after subsoil compaction for sandy loam and loam on the field in Suwon, Korea. The treatments were compaction and deep tillage. Sandy loam and loam were classified to coarse soil and fine soil, respectively, depending on clay contents. In coarse soil, bulk density of compacted plot was 8~17% greater than control and deep tilled plot. The root growth was worse in compacted plot compared with control. In fine soil, plow pan was not observed in deep tilled plot with 5~19% smaller bulk density than compacted plot and control. Deep tillage improved the crop growth. The soil physical properties by compaction were dependent on clay content and crop growth limit depended on the traffic driving.

This study was performed to evaluate the physical properties of reinforced soil-mixture powder. Soil was used to be powder that passed by the No. 200 mech and the reinforcement as calcium carbonate, quicklime and portland cement used for this study to improve soil. We resulted from fineness , setting time, and compressive strength test of reinforced soil-mixture powder. We've got the two conclusions . The first , in case that we were used reinforced soil-mixture powder included some portland cement, the higher the mixture rates of the reinforcement , the wider the difference theoretical data with experimental data. The second, the setting time of reinforced soil-mixture powder is faster than soil powder itself and the reinforcement for promoting strength was proved that calcium carbonate was proper than others if we compared it with other reinforcment.

This study was conducted to investigate physical properties of soil and turfgrass wear characteristics within turfgrasses inside or outside the stadium A 1/1000 scale model Inchon world cup soccer d[me was constructed for this test. Turfgrasses planted inside and outside the model dome were; Kentucky bluegrass(KB), Kentucky bluegrass + perennial ryegrass mixture (KB+PR), Kentucky bluegrass + tall fescue + perennial ryegrass mixture (KB+TF+PR), Zoysia japonica 'Anyangjungzii'(ZA) and Zoysia japonica 'Zenith\`(ZZ). The rootzone was constructed by the multi-layer method (United States Golf Association method). Traffic on turfgrasses was treated with a 120kg roller. Surface soil hardness, soil penetration and water infiltration values on cool-season grasses(KB, KB+PR, KB+TF+PR) was found to be better for soccer play compared to zoysiagrasses(ZA, ZZ). No big differences in surface soil hardness, soil penetration and water infiltration values were found between inside and outside of the model dome. Wear damage on cool-season grasses caused by the traffic treatment was low compared to zoysiagrasses. However, there was no difference in wear damage by the traffic treatment within cool-season grasses while wear damage on ZA was higher than on ZZ within zoysiagrasses. It could be concluded that physical properties and wear characteristics on cool-season grasses were much better for soccer play than on zoysiagrasses.
Physical conditions play vital role on the mechanical properties of frozen soil, especially for the temperature and moisture content of frozen soil. Subsequently, they influence the subsidence and stress law of permafrost layer. Taking Jiangcang No. 1 Coal Mine as engineering background, combined with laboratory experiment, field measurements and empirical formula to obtain the mechanical parameters of frozen soil, the thick plate mechanical model of permafrost was established to evaluate the safety of permafrost roof. At the same time, $FLAC^{3D}$ was used to study the influence of temperature and moisture content on the deformation and stress law of frozen soil layer. The results show that the failure tensile stress of frozen soil is larger than the maximum tensile stress of permafrost roof occurring in the process of mining. It indicates that the permafrost roof cannot collapse under the conditions of moisture content in the range from 20% to 27% as well as temperature in the range from $-35^{\circ}C$ to $-15^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the maximum subsidence of the upper and lower boundary of the overlying permafrost layer decreases with the increase of moisture content in the range of 15% to 27% or the decrease of temperature in the range of $-35^{\circ}C$ to $-15^{\circ}C$ if the temperature or moisture content keeps consistent with $-25^{\circ}C$ or 20%, respectively.

Soil physical and chemical properties at three layers such as top (0-10 cm), middle (10-20 cm) and bottom (20-30 cm) layers under three different vegetation types were studied. Soil samples were collected from Acacia forest, vegetable and fallow lands of Chittagong university campus, Chittagong, Bangladesh. Results showed that sand was the dominant soil particle followed by clay and silt fractions in all soil depths under different vegetation types. Soils of fallow land showed the highest values of bulk density while forest soils had the lowest values at three depths. Acacia forest soil having lowest values of dispersion ratio (DR) is less vulnerable while fallow soil with highest DR values is more vulnerable to soil erosion. The lower pH value at all soil layers in three ecosystems represented that soils under study are acidic in nature. Contents of organic matter, total nitrogen, exchangeable cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and Na+) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were observed higher in Acacia forest soils compared to vegetable and fallow soils. Only soils of vegetable land had higher level of available phosphorus in three layers than that of other two land covers. The study also revealed that different soil properties were observed in three different vegetation types might be due to variation in vegetation and agronomic practices.

This study refers to temporal variation of physical properties of tilled soil under natural rainfalls. Field measurements of porosity, average hydraulic conductivity and average capillary pressure head on a tilled soil were conducted by soil sampler and air-entry permeameter respectively at regular intervals after tillage. Temporal variation of these physical properties were analysed by cumulative rainfall energy since tillage. Field experiment was conducted on a sandy loam soil at Suwon durging April~July in 1989. The followings are a summary of this study results ; 1. Average porosity just after tillage was 0.548cm$^3$/cm$^3$. As cumulative rainfall energy were increased in 0.1070, 0.1755, 0.3849 J/cm$^2$, average porosity were decreased in 0.506, 0.4]95, 0.468m$^3$/cm$^3$ respectively. 2. Average hydraulic conductivity just after tillage was 45.42cm/hr. As cumulative rainfall energy were increased in 0.1755, 0.2466, 0.2978, 0.3849J/cm$^2$ average hydraulic conductivity were decreased in 15.34, 13.47, 9.58, 8.65cm/hr respectively. 3. As average porosity were decreased in 0.548, 0.506, 0.495, 0.468cm$^3$/cm$^3$ average capillary pressure head were increased in 6.1, 6.7, 6.9, 7.4cm respectively. 4. It was found that temporal variation of porosity, average hydraulic conductivity on a tilled soil might be expressed as a function of cumulative rainfall energy and average capillary pressure head might be expressed as a function of porosity. 5. The results of this study may be helpful to predict infiltration into a tilled soil more accurately by considering Temporal variation of physical properties of soil.
This experiment was conducted to find out the simple and economical method to improve physical properties of the soil that was very poor for the establishment of orchard. Jeonnam clay loam soils distributed mainly on rolling and hill side slope, were treated with the explosion of two kinds of dynamite at the depth of 1 m. The change of physical properties was investigated vertically and horizontally after soil profile had settled to some extent. The results were summarized as : 1. The original soil was very high in bulk density and soil hardness. Total porosity and aeration porosities were lower than critical level providing root elongation. It was more apparent in the subsoil than in the surface soil. 2. It was recognized that soil mass destruction and cracking by dynamite explosion decreased soil bulk density and soil hardness and increased porosity, especially non-capillary pores. 3. Effective radius of the improved physical properties by explosion with two dynamites was 100cm at 60cm depth and 30cm at 80cm depth. But with the use of three dynamites it was 100cm at 80cm depth. 4. It was thought that soil mass destruction and cracking caused by explosion was uneven in the two dynamites, and three dynamites was more effective to improve physical properties evenly. 5. With the use of two dynamites, Ammonium explosive was superior to gelatin dynamite.
