Objective: Along with increasing livestock products via intensive rearing, the accumulation of livestock manure has become a serious issue due to the fact that there is finite land for livestock manure recycling via composting. The nutrients from livestock manure accumulate on agricultural land and the excess disembogues into streams causing eutrophication. In order to systematically manage nutrient loading on agricultural land, quantifying the amount of nutrients according to their respective sources is very important. However, there is a lack of research concerning nutrient loss from livestock manure during composting or storage on farms. Therefore, in the present study we quantified the nutrients from dairy cattle manure that were imparted onto agricultural land. Methods: Through investigation of 41 dairy farms, weight reduction and volatile solids (VS), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) changes of dairy cattle manure during the storage and composting periods were analyzed. In order to support the direct investigation and survey on site, the three cases of weight reduction during the storing and composting periods were developed according to i) experiment, ii) reference, and iii) theoretical changes in phosphorus content (${\Delta}P=0$). Results: The data revealed the nutrient loading coefficients (NLCs) of VS, TN, and TP on agricultural land were 1.48, 0.60, and 0.66, respectively. These values indicated that the loss of nitrogen and phosphorus was 40% and 34%, respectively, and that there was an increase of VS since bedding materials were mixed with excretion in the barn. Conclusion: As result of nutrient-footprint analyses, the amounts of TN and TP particularly entered on arable land have been overestimated if applying the nutrient amount in fresh manure. The NLCs obtained in this study may assist in the development of a database to assess the accurate level of manure nutrient loading on soil and facilitate systematic nutrient management.

The characteristics of concentrations and loads of Total Nitrogen(T-N), Total Phosphorus(T-P), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in mountain stream water were examined from September 2000 through August 2001. The 92.5-ha study watershed in Chungbuk Province consists of 59% mixed forest and 30% coniferous forest. Streamflow was measured and water samples were collected at about 10 day intervals for dry days and at 2-6 hour intervals for a storm event at the study watershed outlet. The mean concentration of COD in streamflow for rainy days was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than for dry days. The mean concentrations of T-N and T-P in vegetation growing season (May to October) were lower than those in vegetation dormant season (November to April). Low concentrations of pollutants during vegetation growing season are likely due to the heavy demand for nutrients by the vegetation and biological activity associated with a warming of soil. The ratios of pollutants loads during storm periods to annual pollutants loads were 87% for T-N, 83% for T-p, and 87% for COD. The unit loads of pollutants for study area were estimated at 5.9 kg/ha $\cdot$ yr for T-N, 0.15 kg/ha $\cdot$ yr for T-p, and 23.9 kg/ha $\cdot$ yr for COD. The removal efficiency of pollutants in study area were 24% for T-N, 58% for T-P and 66% for COD, indicating that a study area shows water purification function.
The nitrogen fixation activity and environmental factors of Lespedeza bicli!oy Turcz, forming annual root nodules by symbiotic Rhizobium sp. were analyzed in the field conditions during the growing period. Seasunal changes of $N_2-fixation$ activity showed the maximum value of $120\;\mu\textrm{M}\;C_2_H4{\cdot}noduie\;g\;fw^{-1}{\cdot}hr^{-1}$ during the active growing period (June) and varied significantly depending on the growth phase and environmental factors. The maximum activities were attained at the conditions of pH 7, $30^{\circ}C$ of temperature, 18 Kpa of oxygen partial pressure and inhibited by water stress and nitrogen sources. The habitat soil was weak acidic and poor in nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter contents. The leaf area ratios and chlorophyll contents were ranged from 442 to $48;\textrm{cm}^2{\cdot}g\;dw^{-1}$ and from 33 to $38\;\mu\textrm{g}\;chI{\cdot}\textrm{cm}^2$. Nitrogen contents in each organ showed the maximum of 46, 19 and $11\;mg{\cdot}g\;dw^{-1}, respectively for leaf, rool and stem in the early period. The highest phosphorus contents were 4.2, 1.2 and $0.6\;mg{\cdot}g\;dw^{-1}$, respectively for leaf. root and stem in early growing period. The allocation ratios of nitrogen quantity showed 60% for leaves and 73% for roots during the active and late growth period, and 22% [or stems in average. The allocalion ralios o[ phosphorus quantity showed 58% for leaves during the most productive period, 70% for roots in the pre-growth stage and 26% for stems in average.verage.

In this study, based on a natural monument forest research by Camellia japonica L. Forest appointed as a natural monument located environment and growth environment and the soil environment, Camellia japonica L. Forest soil in order to analyze effects of soil in Camellia japonica L. Forest correlation analysis the results can be summarized as follows: First, a natural monument Camellia japonica L. forest located on the foot of a mountain valley or within the stream, a lot of sunshine southeast, east, and south in the direction of the share due to external factors, making it a good, but, $15{\sim}30^{\circ}$ of distributed in the soil slopes in the slope there is a risk of loss are appearing. Second, the growth of the Status of Camellia japonica L. forest represents the distribution of the uneven-aged forest diameter class. but increases the density of the upper forest trees Camellia japonica L. occurred in lower saplings do not have growth. The width of crown diameter class caused a narrow oppressed tree, the average tree height in the 8.09m, camellia in common was lower than that of tree height, variation diameter class in the width of crown distribution severe low correlations were analyzed. Third, the natural monument Camellia japonica L. forest soil composition, properties of soil pH, etc. 10 entries were analyzed components of the soil. In summary analysis properties of soil, soil pH, calcium, organic matter, magnesium was good and potassium content was insufficient, nitrogen and phosphorus were excess. Fourth, the growth condition of Camellia japonica L. forest and soil physicochemical properties, the results of the correlation analysis. magnesium, calcium, nitrogen affects the growth of Camellia japonica L. forest. Other seven kinds of items showed no effect on growth. Current Status and Future Growth of Camellia japonica L. forest soil and soil environments as well as the relationship between, Camellia Forest Factors affecting the growth of the state in terms of long-term ecological research and conservation status of settled Camellia japonica L. forest research for building materials there will be continued.
The construction procedures and artificial turf maintenance program on golf course definitely influence on the distortion of its environment. Soil microbial communities in soil profile were affected directly by those practises on turf areas. In Jeju island, the environmental impact assessment has been required to apply the first quality class granular activated carbon(GAC), which has a high absorbent character to agricultural chemicals, on the soil profiles of golf green system to reduce the pesticide leaching to ground water. This research was carried out to analyze the changes of microbial communities and chemical properties on soil profiles where GAC had been applied at the construction stage at two golf courses in Jeju. The changes of soil microbial population and chemical properties associated with construction methods of soil profile and agrochemical management program were analyzed by monthly at the surface and sub-soil profiles during April through October, 2007. The total numbers of bacteria and fungi, soil moisture content, soil physio-chemical properties were measured on greens and fairways of the both golf courses with different GAC treatment on the green and fairway soil profiles. The results showed that GAC had positive effects on the water holding capacity, pH and EC, however, it did not improved the holding capacity of available nutrients ${NO_3}^-,{NH_4}^+$, and phosphorus by its sorption phenomenon. In microbial count test, the total numbers of bacteria and fungi showed a great variation during sampling dates. That may directly relate to the agrochemical application, however, the ratio of total bacterial number versus total fungus number showed a constant value on a sub-soil of 15~30cm depth. Thus, the construction method of GAC in soil profile, and application of fertilizer and pesticide, both impacted on the changes of microbial population. It's means that the construction method of soil profile and turf management using agro-materials might greatly affect on the turfgrass culture and the environment of golf course.
In order to compare the effectiveness of different phosphorus forms (pulverized as regranulized) and formulars (compound fertilizers) of fused phosphate and to compare the effectiveness of boron from different forms (straight borax, granulized with fused phosphate and included in compound fertilizer), a field experiment was conducted on a relatively fertile upland soil using soybean as a test crop. Results are summarized as following. 1. Yield of soybean was significantly higher in the plots fertilized with P when compared to check plot (no p). However, no significant differences were observed among the different forms or formulars of fused phosphate, indicating that the regranulization or formulation of compound fertilizer did not influence the effectiveness of phosphorus. 2. The application of boron, regardless of its formular, brought about higher B content in plant tissue and higher grain yield. There was a tendency that boron contained in ragranulized fused phosphate was more effective than straight borax. The results also indicated that when boron is to be included in NPK compound fertilizer, its content should be at the least 1.5% as $B_2O_3$. 3. The effectiveness of boron appeared as increased number of pod, higher B, and Ca contents in plant and the amounts of uptake of these elements by soybean. 4. The analysis of soil after the experiment indicated that different forms or formulars of fused phosphate were similarly effective in increasing the available P, Ca, and Mg contents in the soil. 5. Slight increase in available B contents in the experimental plot soils applied with boron fertilizer was observed after the trial.
A field experiment was conducted to evaluate effect of phosphate coated slow release fertilizer on the directly seeded rice. Odae byeo was seeded by drill under dry condition. The soil was a sandy clay loam soil located in the Experimental Farm of the Kangweon National University, Chuncheon, Kangweon-Do. The yield of rice from the urea applicated directly seeded field was 84.9% of the yield from the transplanted field, and showed no difference between split application treatments. The yield from the phosphate coated slow release fertilizer was the highest showing 110.7% of the yield from the urea application. The yield from the polymer coated slow release fertilizer was 90.4%. The yield from the organic fertilizer 400kg/10a treatment was 81.8% and was 94.8% from the organic fertilizer 600kg/10a treatment. In 1996 experiment, the yield from the phosphate coated slow release fertilizer was higher than the yield from the transplanted field. The $NO_3-N$ and $NH_4-N$ concentrations in soil solution at the depth of 15cm revealed that nitrogen leaching was the highest from the urea N40-0-30-30 treatment, and the lowest from the phosphate coated slow release fertilizer. The phosphorus concentration showed similar pattern. Therefore, use of phosphate coated slow release fertilizer increased rice yield and decreased loss of nitrogen and phosphorus loss.

Sweet potato varieties with high fiber content in the storage root have poor texture when steamed or roasted. This study investigates the difference in fiber content among sweet potato varieties by soil and climate. The average fiber content of 'Hogammi', 'Sodammi', 'Pungwonmi', 'Danjami', and 'Jinyulmi' cultivars from the samples collected at farms in Haenam, Muan, and Unbong, Korea were 95.71, 66.73, 44.55, 40.55, and 38.53 mg/100g FW, respectively. There was no significant difference between site-specific conditions and varieties. Based on the degree of visual fibrousness, 'Hogammi' has an average of 3.6-4.0 with many thick stringy fibers. The fiber content of the 'Hogammi' cultivar was measured across 19 sites representing the main sweet potato growing regions of Korea. The fiber content was between 115.82 and 114.6 mg/100g in Haenam 2 and Boryeong 1, and 87.46 mg/100g in Hamyang. However, the fiber content at the remaining 16 sites was within the range of 94.63-108.52 mg/100g, although there were some site-level differences. The fiber content of the sweet potato storage roots were positively correlated with soil phosphorus (R2 = 0.58**), organic matter (R2 = 0.52*), and pH (R2 = 0.51*), which had a significance of 1% and 5%. The fiber content of sweet potato storage roots was found to have increased with increasing phosphorus content, organic matter and pH in the soil. However, there was no correlation with the amount of precipitation, days of precipitation and hours of sunshine with the fiber content of sweet potato at the selected sites.
Many infectious diseases have emerged or re-emerged during the past 50 years in South Korea. There were three outbreaks of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in South Korea between January 2010 and March 2011. Over 3.45 million animals were slaughtered (33.3% of the existing pigs, 8.4% of dairy cows and 3.4% of cattle). To select optimal degradation agents of animal cadavers, degradation rates and fertilizer components of pig cadavers were investigated using hydrogen chloride (HCl), potassium hydroxide (KOH) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) hydrolysis methods. Degradation rates of pig cadavers using HCl, KOH and NaOH were 81.1, 82.8 and 91.6%, respectively. Total nitrogen (T-N) concentration in degradation solution of pig cadavers using KOH hydrolysis method was higher than that in NaOH and HCl hydrolysis methods. Total phosphorus ($P_2O_5$) concentrations in degradation solution of pig cadavers in all hydrolysis methods ranged 0.14 ~ 0.28%. Total potassium ($K_2O$) concentration for KOH hydrolysis method was higher than that for other hydrolysis methods. The concentration of T-N and $K_2O$ in degradation solution of pig cadavers by KOH hydrolysis method were higher than that in NaOH and HCl hydrolysis methods. Thus, to recycle animal cadavers in agriculture, the optimal degradation agent for hydrolysis was KOH.
General physical and chemical characteristics of eleven apple orchard soils derived from granite, granodiorite, diorite, arkose sandstone and shale were investigated in relation to soil profile. The results are summerized as follows: 1. Soils were mostly sandy and showed pH 4.35 to 6.75, 1.14 to 5.58 of organic matter, 0.065 to 0.209% of nitrogen. All properties decreased with depth. 2. Total exchangeable bases of surface soils were comparablly low (4.89 to 17.81me/100g, Ca>Mg>K>Na). Cation exchange capacity ranged from 7.74 to 21.72 mg/100g and base saturation percentage from 22.52 to 94.62%. 3. Phosphorus content of surface soil was very low (less than 35.5 mg/100g). The contents of potassium (7.2-79.2 mg/100g), available copper (1.0-16.9 ppm) and water soluble boron (0.18-0.72 ppm) were high in surface soil but low with depth. The content of manganese showed clear difference with pH, that is, at pH 4 to 6 water soluble manganese ranged from 0.42 to 17.8 ppm and exchangeable manganese from 9.82 to 66.38 ppm but above pH 6 the water soluble was less than 0.70 ppm and the exchangeable less than 22.25 ppm.
