  • In the design and analysis of soil nailed slope, interaction between soil and nail is one of important problems. In the present analysis approaches for the interactions have developed a elastic analysis approach or a plastic analysis approach. However these approaches are not able to estimate the general interaction between soil and nail. In this study the general interaction between soil and nail using the strain wedge model is proposed. Also results of comparison between the proposed method and full scale test results by Gassler(1976) and large scale experimental results at Oxford University are shown in good agreements.

  • Recently a pressurized grouting soil nail is demanded due to problems beyond of economical and engineering purpose. In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PGSN (Pressurized Grouting Soil Nailing) system is respected to reduced displacements of nails and increase of global slope stability. And effects of various factors related to the design of the PGSN system, such as the length of the soil nail, injected pressure and W/C ratio of cement grout in the pressurized grouting soil nail are examined throughout a series of the displacement-controlled field pull-out tests. Displacement-controlled field pull-out tests are performed in the present study and the volume of grouting are also evaluated based on the measurements. In addition, both short-term and long-term characteristics of pull-out deformations of the newly proposed PGSN system are analyzed and compared with those of the general soil nailing system by carrying out the stress-controlled field pull-out tests. From the pull-out characteristics of pressurized grouting soil nails, it is found that the effect of the length of the soil nail, injected pressure and W/C ratio of cement grout are important parameters.

  • In this study the load distribution and settlement of soil nailed-drilled shafts subjected to axial loads were evaluated by a load-transfer approach. Special attention was given to the reinforcing effects of soil nails placed from the shafts to surrounding weathered- and soft-rocks based on an analytical study and a numerical analysis. An analytical method that takes into account the number, the positions on the shaft, the grade, and the inclination angle at which the soil nails are placed was developed using a load transfer curve methods. Through the comparative study, it is found that the prediction by present approach simulates well the general trends observed by the in-situ measurements and numerical results SHAFT 4.0. It is also found that the reinforcing effects of soil nails increases in the order of hard-, soft- and weathered-rock since the ultimate shaft resistance far large bored piles in weathered rocks is fully mobilized after small displacements of the shaft, compared to the soft- and hard-rocks and subsequently the side resistance is transferred down to the soil nails.

  • In this study, the applicability of geotextile mesh soil nails on slopes was evaluated by numerical analysis to reduce environmental problems which a general soil nailing might produce and to improve its economical efficiency and construction convenience. To this end, in situ pull-out tests were conducted for both general soil nail and geotextile mesh soil nail and their pull-out characteristics were analyzed. Also, finite difference method was used to verify the suitability of numerical simulation. Parameters for nail and ground conditions were selected and sensitivity analysis was performed for the evaluation of slope stability. In addition, analysis was performed by limit equilibrium method which is widely used for slope stability analysis in practice. As a result, if the nail diameter was same, there is no big difference between geotextile mesh soil nails and general soil nails in terms of slope stability. Therefore it can be expected that geotextile mesh soil nails could be effective for slope reinforcement since they could keep a slope as stable as general soil nails and give better economical efficiency and construction convenience than general soil nails.

  • In this study, a soil nail design method for a stability analysis of local instability with nail reinforced slope was proposed. The failure mechanism of a local instability of slope was studied and a theoretical equation to estimate the stability of slope was developed. Using the developed equation, the stability analysis was performed according to installation conditions of soil nail such as a slope inclination, a thickness of soil layer, a nail inclination, and a nail spacing. Considering those design factors, a sensitivity analysis for each influence factors was conducted. Analysis results showed that the safety factor of reinforced slope with nail was higher than the slope without nail. In addition, the safety factor of slope according to ground condition was increased in the order of dry, saturated, and seepage condition.

  • Since the first construction of soil nailing in France in 1972, the application of soil nailing has increased. However, there is currently no design method which is universally accepted or agreed upon far soil nailed wall, because each of the design methods has different assumptions and, therefore, different approaches, moreover, since the suggested optimal inclination angles of nails are different by researchers. Therefore, the effect of nail inclination with soil nailing is analyzed by FEM. In this study, Finite element program SOILSTRUCT was applied for the effect analysis of nail inclination in soil nailed wall. For this finite element analysis, CEBTP No. 1 project data were used. The analyzed nail inclination ranged from 0$^{\circ}$ to 30$^{\circ}$ with 5$^{\circ}$ intervals. The result of finite element analysis showed that the most optimal inclination was 20$^{\circ}$ Also, the tension farce in the nails increased as the nail inclination increased. However, the effect of nail inclination on the wall deformation was very little. Therefore, constructability seems to be more important than nail inclination. Also, the tension force in the nails increases as the nail depth below the top of the wall increases, except f3r the lowest nail. Therefore, appropriate nail diameter should be used to prevent breakage of nails with considering nail strength-deformation interaction.

  • In this study, the tests were carried out for the behavior according to method of constrained nail head of slope reinforced with soil nail under dynamic loading, by using shaking table. Shaking table tests were carried out by applying Hachinohe seismic wave having the long-period characteristics and Ofunato seismic wave having short-period characteristics, as changing constrained and unconstrained condition of nail head, and so on. Failure mode, ground acceleration characteristics, vertical displacement and horizontal displacement of slope were compared and analyzed on the basis of results obtained from the test. Results of carrying out shaking table test showed that both short-period wave and long-period wave had large effects on slope, and constraint of nail head was found to have large shear resistance for dynamic load. And it was confirmed that stability of slope under seismic loading was largely improved by constrained head of soil nail.

  • In general the stability of soil nail-slope system, the shear resistance is neglected because the tensile resistance of nail acts mainly for slope stabilization. This is because that deformed steel is generally used for nail and it does ductile behavior. In other side when the steel pipe with high rigidity is used for nail, the shear resistance at failure surface work more than deformed steel. In order to analyze effects of shear resistance at the soil nail-slope system with high steel piped nail, a series of numerical analyses were performed. Also numerical analyses at 3 conditions - 5 nailed, 7 nailed, 9 nailed at the same slope were perfomed for investigating the trend of shear resistance effect. From these 3D numerical analyses, it was found that the maximum shear resistances at each nails were larger in case of steel piped nail and because of this, the factor of safety at the condition of the steel piped nail appears larger than that of deformed steel nail.

  • Recently a removable soil nail is demanded due to problems beyond of economical and engineering purpose. In this study controlled displacement and controlled force field pull-out tests are carried out 7 times in order to evaluate short-term and long-term pull-out characteristics of the removable soil nail. For evaluating application of removable soil nailing system, bending tests of removable soil nails and tensile tests of fixed sockets are carried out. In the removable soil nailing system, the predicted horizontal displacements from FLAC-2D are also compared with the field measurements occurred in stepwise excavation. And approach for the stability analysis of removable soil nailing system after removed is proposed.

  • As a reinforcement technique, the application of removable soil nailing has been extended to solve the public grievance of typical soil nailing such as the geotechnical environmental problem and invasion of adjacent land. In the case of removable soil nailing, pullout capacity of the nail depends on the adhesive strength of a fixed socket. Because the existing fixed socket is made from a plastic product, the strength of a socket is less than a steel bar and then the yield failure by abrasion and deformation is occurred on the steel bar-socket contact surface. In this study, therefore, experimental analysis from laboratory test of a removable soil nail equipped with steel socket, improving the adhesive strength of steel bar-socket connection is performed to estimate the increase effect of pullout capacity of a soil nail.
