A Second Harmonic Generation Frequency Resolved Optical Gating(SHG FROG) system was developed. Its performance test shows that it is capable of accurately measuring the temporal evolution of the electric field, both amplitude and phase, of femtosecond light pulses. For the retrieval of the temporal evolution of light pulses from their spectrograms obtained by using the FROG system, Principal Components Generalized Projection(PCGP) algorithm is used and in addition we used additional constraints of second-harmonic spectrum, marginals in frequency and time-delay of the spectrogram. Such modification of the software brings about significant improvement in speed and stability of the pulse retrieval process.
The Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) has been used for a long time in campus and enterprise networks as the most popular network virtualization solution. Due to the benefits and advantages achieved by using VLAN, network operators and administrators have been using it for constructing their networks up until now and have even extended it to manage the networking in a cloud computing system. However, their configuration is a complex, tedious, time-consuming, and error-prone process. Since Software Defined Networking (SDN) features the centralized network management and network programmability, it is a promising solution for handling the aforementioned challenges in VLAN management. In this paper, we first introduce a new architecture for campus and enterprise networks by leveraging SDN and OpenFlow. Next, we have designed and implemented an application for easily managing and flexibly troubleshooting the VLANs in this architecture. This application supports both static VLAN and dynamic VLAN configurations. In addition, we discuss the hybrid-mode operation where the packet processing is involved by both the OpenFlow control plane and the traditional control plane. By deploying a real test-bed prototype, we illustrate how our system works and then evaluate the network latency in dynamic VLAN operation.

This study determines the water length effects on the modal behavior of a prototype arch dam using Operational and Analytical Modal Analyses. Achievement of this purpose involves construction of a prototype arch dam-reservoir-foundation model under laboratory conditions. In the model, reservoir length was taken to be as much as three times the dam height. To determine the experimental dynamic characteristics of the arch dam using Operational Modal Analysis, ambient vibration tests were implemented for empty reservoir and three different reservoir water lengths. In the ambient vibration tests, the dam was vibrated by natural excitations provided from small impact effects and the response signals were measured using sensitive accelerometers. Operational Modal Analysis software process signals collected from the ambient vibration tests, and Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification techniques estimated modal parameters of the dams. To validate the experimental results, 3D finite element model of the prototype arch dam was modeled by ANSYS software for empty reservoir and three different reservoir water lengths, and dynamic characteristics of each model were determined analytically. At the end of the study, experimentally and analytically identified dynamic characteristics compared to each other. Also, changes on the natural frequencies along to water length are plotted as graphs. Results suggest that reservoir water complicates the modal behavior of the arch dam significantly.

Symmetry is easily found in animals and plants as well as in artificial structures. It is useful not only for human cognitive process but also for image understanding by computer. Application areas include face detection and recognition, indexing of image database, image segmentation and detection, and analysis of medical images. The method used in this paper extracts edges, and the perpendicular bisector of any pair of selected edge points is considered to be a candidate axis of symmetry. The coefficients of the perpendicular bisectors are accumulated in the coefficient space. Axis of symmetry is determined to be the line for which the histogram has maximum value. This method shows good results, but the usefulness of the method is restricted because the amount of computation increases proportional to the square of the number of edges. In this paper, an acceleration method is proposed which performs $2^{2n}$ times faster than the original one. Experiment on 20 test images shows that the proposed method using level-3 image segmentation performs 63.9 times faster than the original method.
This paper describes the implementation of a digital audio effect system-on-a-chip (SoC), which integrates an embedded digital signal processor (DSP) core, audio codec intellectual property, a number of peripheral blocks, and various audio effect algorithms. The audio effect SoC is developed using a software and hardware co-design method. In the design of the SoC, the embedded DSP and some dedicated hardware blocks are developed as a hardware design, while the audio effect algorithms are realized using a software centric method. Most of the audio effect algorithms are implemented using a C code with primitive functions that run on the embedded DSP, while the equalization effect, which requires a large amount of computation, is implemented using a dedicated hardware block with high flexibility. For the optimized implementation of audio effects, we exploit the primitive functions of the embedded DSP compiler, which is a very efficient way to reduce the code size and computation. The audio effect SoC was fabricated using a 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process and evaluated successfully on a real-time test board.

The hyper-geometric distribution software reliability growth model (HGDM) was recently developed and successfully applied to real data sets. The HGDM considers the sensitivity factor as a parameter to be estimated. In order to reflect the random behavior of the test-and-debug process, this paper generalizes the HGDM by assuming that the sensitivity factor is a binomial random variable. Such a generalization enables us to easily understand the statistical characteristics of the HGDM. It is shown that the least squares method produces the identical results for both the HGDM and the generalized HGDM. Methods for computing the maximum likelihood estimates and predicting the future outcomes are also presented.

This research is comprised of virtually simulating behavior while experiencing low gravity effects in advance of real world testing in low gravity aboard Zero Gravity Corporation's (Zero-G) research aircraft (727-200F). The experiment simulated a drill rig penetrating a regolith simulant. Regolith is a layer of loose, heterogeneous superficial deposits covering solid rock on surfaces of the Earth' moon, asteroids and Mars. The behavior and propagation of space debris when drilled in low gravity was tested through simulations and visualization in a leading dynamic simulation software as well as discrete element modeling software and in preparation for comparing to real world results from flying the experiment aboard Zero-G. The study of outer space regolith could lead to deeper scientific knowledge of extra-terrestrial surfaces, which could lead us to breakthroughs with respect to space mining or in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). These studies aimed to test and evaluate the drilling process in low to zero gravity environments and to determine static stress analysis on the drill when tested in low gravity environments. These tests and simulations were conducted by a team from Texas A&M University's Department of Construction Science, the United States Air Force Academy's Department of Astronautical Engineering, and Crow Industries
Combined phase transformation and heat transfer was considered on the simulation of hot press forming process, using material properties modeler, $JMatPro^{(R)}$ and a finite element package, $DEFORM^{TM}$-HT. In order to obtain high temperature mechanical properties and flow curves for different phases, a material properties modeler, $JMatPro^{(R)}$ was used, avoiding expensive and extensive high temperature materials tests. The results successfully show that the strength of hot press forming parts may exhibit different strength in the same parts, depending on the contact of blank with tooling. It was also shown effectively that the strength of the parts can be controlled by designing appropriate cooling paths and coolants. This was shown in terms of different heat convection coefficient in the calculation. Overall, current combination of software was shown to be an effective tool for the tool and process design of hot forming process, although the material modeler needs to be additionally verified by an appropriate set of high temperature materials test.

Recently, the design process for a railway bogie frame in Europe has been carried out according to the norm EN 13749. The activities in the norm EN shall demonstrate that the design of the bogie frame fulfills the acceptances of 4 steps of the program such as structural calculation, static tests, fatigue test and on-tracks tests. At the end of the acceptance program, the on-tracks tests have the aim to measure the real stress history generated in operation and to verify that they are reasonably next to those calculated and measured on the test rig. Therefore, in order to assure the safety of the railway vehicle, it is important to examined the durability of that under load histories measured from on-tracks tests. In this study, under variable amplitude loading based on the actual acceleration history, fatigue analysis of the welding bogie frame is investigated by using durability software. Moreover, the fatigue life of the frame under the loading in the norm EN fatigue test condition is evaluated and compared with the life under variable amplitude loading.
Polyester composites play a vital role in civil engineering applications, especially in bridge and car park structures. Therefore, the addition of waste silica-based fillers will both improve the mechanical and durability performance of composites and produce an environmentally friendly material. In this study, the mechanical performance of polyester composites was investigated experimentally and numerically by adding micro and nano-sized silica-based fillers, marble powder, silica fume and nano-silica. 24 cubes for the compression test and 18 prisms for the flexural test were produced in six different groups containing 30% marble powder, 5% silica fume and 1% nano-silica by weight. SEM/EDS testing was used to investigate the distribution of filler particles in the matrix. Experimentally collected results were used to validate tests in the Abaqus software. Additionally, the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) was used to estimate the fracture process for the flexural test. The results show that the added silica fume, marble powder and nano silica improves the compressive strength of polyester composites by 32-38% and the flexural tensile strength by 10-60% compared to pure polyester composite. The numerically obtained results matched well with the experimental data, demonstrating the accuracy and feasibility of the calibrated finite element model.
