1. Objective : The purpose of this study is to understand the origin, changes and composition of Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang. 2. Methods : 1) Analyzed the context of the progressive transformation of soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang in related passages from "Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑)", "Donguisusebowon Chobongwon (東醫壽世保元 草本卷)", "Donguisusebowon Gabobon (東醫壽世保元 甲午 本)", "Donguisusebowon Sinchukbon (東醫壽世保元 辛丑本)", "Dongmuyugo (東武遺稿)" 2) Examined the differences between the utilization of Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang in pre-existing manuscripts according to pathological pattern and more specifically at a pathological stage. 3) Analyzed the total primary effect of the herbs as a prescriptive category, as well as the herbal properties of each component. 3. Results and Conclusions : 1) Originally Dongwon's Bojungikgi-tang was prescribed as a stomach & spleen organ tonifying medicine so it was easily applied and established as a prescription appropriate for Soeumin constitutional types with a weaker spleen organ. 2) From Gabobon(甲午本), Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was modified, excluding Bupleurum falcatum(柴胡), Cimicifuga heracleifolia (升麻) and substituting Teucrium chamaedrys(藿香), Ophiopogon japonicus(蘇葉) which are herbs appropriate for the Soeumin constitutional type. 3) In the Gabobon(甲午本), the Gegi-tang which has yang raising properties is included in the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang. In Sinchukbon(辛丑本), the Gegi-tang of the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang in the Gabobon was excluded and the Gegi-tang mutated into Hwangigyeji-tang. 4) In the Gabobon(甲午本), as the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was prescribed for Soeumin disease regardless of favorable-unfavorable patterns and mild-severe patterns, the stage of the disease when to prescribe Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was not clarified. 5) As of the Sinchukbon(辛丑本) edition, as Soeumin's prescriptions have been obvious, the soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang was applied to Mang-yang disease with Hwangigyeji-tang and Seungyangikki-tang 6) As of the Sinchukbon(辛丑本) edition, the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang has been applied to parients having both exterior-heat Mang-yang disease and Greater-yin disease, at the same time. 7) As of the Sinchukbon(辛丑本) edition, finally, the Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang formula has been established as gathering Qi and middle tonification with Panax ginseng(人蔘), Astragalus membranaceus(黃芪), keeping the spleen healthy with Artractylodes japonica(白朮), keeping the spleen strong with Angelica acutiloba(當歸), rooting the spleen with Citrus reticulata(陳皮), raising Yang and middle jiao with Teucrium chamaedrys(藿香), Ophiopogon japonicus(蘇葉), middle tonification with Glycyrrhiza glabra(甘草灸), Zingiber officinale(生薑), Zizyphus jujuba(大棗).

Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang, which is based on the Sasang constitutional medicine, for the patient who has suffered from Urinary Disturbance. Methods A 29 year-old woman who suffered from Urinary Disturbance but had no significant organic lesion, was enrolled in this study. The patient had the symptoms including urinary incontinence, pollakiuria, painful urination, discomfort after urinating, general body weakness, chilling sign, and abdominal pain. We diagnosed her as Soeumin Yang Depletion pattern and treated with Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang. Results After 12 days of admission treatment with Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang, remarkable improvement was seen on her total number of urination and the Qualiveen Questionnaire score. Conclusions This clinical case indicates that Soeumin's Bojungikgi-tang is effective in treatment of a Soeumin Mang-yang Syndrome, including Urinary Disturbance.

Objectives : This study reports a case of Soeumin patients with Herpes zostersMethods : We examined progress of Soeumin Herpes zoster patient's symptoms (skin blisters, pain, insomnia, etc.) and complications when during and after the treatments.Results : Soeumin Herpes zoster patient was diagnosed as Yang Depletion. Yongdamsagan-tang, Sweet BV, were effective for decrease the patient's skin blisters and pain. Soeumin Bojungikgi-tang prevented the patient's aftereffects.Conclusions : Soeumin Herpes zoster patient who had severe pain, blisters, and sleep disorder, was expected high risk of postherpetic neuralgia. But diagnosed Yang Depletion symptomatology and treated with Soeumin Bojungikgi-tang, patient recover completely without sequelae.

Objectives The purpose of this case study was to report improvements of a Soeumin patient with sweating and palpitation after chemotherapy for primary central nervous system lymphoma by diagnosing and treating as Yang Depletion Symptomatology. Methods The Soeumin patient was administered Bojungikgi-tang and treated with acupuncture. Global assessment scale (GAS) was used to assess the improvements of symptoms. Results Sweating was improved to GAS 20 and palpitation was gone away after using Sasang constitutional medicine treatment. Conclusions This study shows that Sasang constitutional medicine can be effective treatment for side effects caused by chemotherapy for cancer.

1. Objectives Although the incidence of allergic rhinitis is increasing continually, Sasang Constitutional Medicine is showing favorable treatment outcomes. This study was aimed to test the antimicrobial effects of Bojungikgi-tang, Gwakhyangjeonggi-san, and Gunggwihyangso-san which are being applied to allergic rhinitis of Soeumin. 2. Methods Klebsiella pneumoniae 289 was extracted from allergic rhinitis patients. Bojungikgi-tang, Gwakhyangjeonggi-san, and Gunggwihyangso-san were boiled down and concentrated, and the substances obtained were tested for the effects on stability to temperature and pH and on antimicrobial activity 3. Results When measured the level of antimicrobial activity, the inhibition zones of Bojungikgi-tang, Gwakhyangjeonggi-san, and Gunggwihyangso-san were found 11.42, 11.07, and 10.63mm, respectively. The levels of MIC were $15{\mu}{\ell}$, $20{\mu}{\ell}$, and $10{\mu}{\ell}$ in that order. The antimicrobial activities were increased 13.88% in Bojungikgi-tang, 16.63% in Gwakhyangjeonggi-san, and 10.72% in Gunggwihyangso-san. There was no influence of pH to antimicrobial activity of all three substances. 4. Conclusions Bojungikgi-tang, Gwakhyangjeonggi-san, and Gunggwihyangso-san had a high level of antimicrobial activity to Klebsiella pneumoniae 289 even at a low concentration.

1. Objective The aim of this study was to survey the adverse reactions by the prescriptions of Soeumin.Soyangin and to compare the tendency of their symptoms according to Sasang constitutional type. 2. Methods The clinical data for this study were based on the medical records of total 91 cases collected from an oriental clinic during 1996-2004. Their constitutional types were diagnosed by a specialist and then confirmed by drug reactions. To evaluate reliability of the analysis, we only analysed the cases above grade C. The target prescriptions were Palmulgunja-tang, Bojungikgi-tang, Hyangsayangwi-tang, Ijung-tang, Hyeongbangsabaek-san, Jeoryeongchajeonja-tang, Yanggyeoksanhwa-tang, Yangdokbaekho-tang and the sorts of Jihwang-tang. 3. Results and Conclusion The prescriptions which were not suitable for their Sasang constitutional type induced indigestion, stomachache and evacuation troubles basically. Besides, the prescriptions of Soeumin caused some fever of the upper body and skin on Taeeumin and Soyangin. And the prescriptions of Soyangin lead to more severe digestive and evacuation troubles on Taeeumin and Soeumin. 4. Conclusion: This study need to be compensated by additional clinical studies which are more systematic and continuous. This way we can make the firm evidence for approving the difference of drug susceptibility according to the Sasang constitutional type.

This is a case report of a tracheostomized 80-year-old man suffering from sputum after stroke. His symptoms were watery sputum production requiring frequent sputum suction. The subject was diagnosed as having a deficiency of spleen qi and was treated with Gami-ijung-tang, Yukgunja-tang, Soeumin Bojungikgi-tang, and Ijin-tang extract in the herbal prescription known to dispell Dam-eum (phlegm-retained fluid). Frequency of ssputum suction and condition of sputum were checked everyday. Gamiijung-tang, Soeumin Bojungikgi-tang with Ijin-tang extract led to improvement by reducing sputum secretion. There were limitations on frequency of suction and condition of sputum which were thought to be derived from tracheostomy, however. Consequently, pathology and treatment of sputum will be different whether tracheostomy was performed or not.

Objectives: This study reports on the effect of Korean medicine treatment, including Soeumin Bojungikgitang-gagambang, on a patient with postherpetic neuralgia. Methods: The patient received Korean herbal medicine, pharmacopuncture treatment, and acupuncture treatment for 22 days. We assessed changes in symptoms due to the treatment using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), the McGill Pain Questionnaire-Short Form (SF-MPQ), and the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) scale. We also measured the Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (LANSS) to distinguish neuropathic pain. Results: After treatment, the patient showed decreased NRS, SF-MPQ, and EQ-5D scores. Conclusion: The results indicate that Korean medicine treatment, including Soeumin Bojungikgitang-gagambang, is an effective management of symptoms in patients with postherpetic neuralgia.
