  • This paper describes the reduction of a hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) generated from a biogas plant. Micro bubble system is adopted to supply air into the water in the reaction chamber, which can increase the contact area of the supplied air to the reserving water. Two stage reaction chambers having two reaction rooms are designed and manufactured to enhance the reduction rate of a hydrogen sulfide. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is also considered to get rid of a hydrogen sulfide. Air volume rate to the water in a reaction chamber is maintained between 0.5 and $1.0m^3/min$. Throughout experimental measurement of the concentration of a hydrogen sulfide by changing the volume of supplied air into the water, reduction rate of a hydrogen sulfide increases as air volume increases. Adding sodium hydroxide to the water with the air supply can reduce effectively a hydrogen sulfide up to 99.5% from biogas. It is noted that a hydrogen sulfide generated by a biogas plant can reduce by supplying micro bubble air and sodium hydroxide effectively.

  • Recently, the research and development of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFRs) have made progresses. However, liquid sodium, the coolant of an SFR, is chemically unstable and sodium fire can be occurred when liquid sodium leaks from sodium pipe. To reduce the damage by the sodium fire, many fire walls and fire extinguishers are needed for SFRs. LBB concept in SFR might reduce the scale of sodium fire and decrease or eliminate fire walls and fire extinguishers. Therefore, LBB concept can contribute to improve economic efficiency and to strengthen defense-in depth safety. The LBB assessment procedure has been well established, and has been used significantly in light water reactors (LWRs). However, an LBB assessment of an SFR is more complicated because SFRs are operated in elevated temperature regions. In such a region, because creep damage may occur in a material, thereby growing defects, an LBB assessment of an SFR should consider elevated temperature effects. The procedure and method for this purpose are provided in RCC-MRx A16, which is a French code. In this study, LBB assessment was performed for PGSFR IHTS hot-leg pipe according to RCC-MRx A16 and the applicability of the code was discussed.

  • Background: This study aimed to compare the remineralization effects of sodium caseinate and other substances on artificially demineralized enamel. Methods: We selected 25 healthy human premolars and molars and produced a total of 75 specimens by dividing them into five groups: control group, with distilled water; experimental group 1 (EG1), with 3% sodium caseinate; EG2, with 10% sodium caseinate; EG3, with casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP); and EG4, with 0.05% NaF. Subsequently, the specimens were immersed in an artificial demineralization solution for 60 min. The demineralized specimens were then immersed in a remineralization solution for 7 days. Surface microhardness was measured using a microhardness tester, and remineralized lesions were observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Regarding statistical analysis, the paired t-test and analysis of variance were performed using the SPSS program. Results: Although the surface hardness of the remineralized lesions increased significantly in all groups (p<0.05), the average increment did not differ significantly between the groups. The surface microhardness of CPP-ACP was the highest, followed by that of 0.05% NaF and 10% sodium caseinate. The remineralization effect of sodium caseinate was similar to that of 0.05% NaF. SEM confirmed that all groups treated with the remineralization solution were remineralized. Conclusions: Although the remineralization effect of sodium caseinate was slightly lower than that of CPP-ACP, it was similar to that of 0.05% NaF. Therefore, to enhance the remineralization effect of sodium caseinate, the appropriate concentration and application time should be determined.

  • The pre-concentration and determination of ultratrace arsenic in water samples was studied by the precipitate flotation technique. The arsenic in 1.0l of water sample, in which all suspended materials were filtered out, was coprecipitated together with La(OH)$_3$ precipitates at pH 8.5${\pm}$0.1. After the precipitate was made to be hydrophobic by adding mixed surfactant of 1 : 8 mole ratio of sodium oleate and sodium dodecyl sulfate, it was floated with the aid of tiny bubbles of nitrogen gas in a flotation cell. The floated precipitate was quantitatively collected on a micropore glass filter by the suction, dissolved with small volume of 1.0M sulfuric acid, and accurately diluted to 25.00ml with a de-ionized water. Total arsenic was spectrophotometrically determinated by forming silver diethyldithiocarbamate complex of arsine generated from arsenic in the concentrated solution. The calibration curve was linear up to 20ng/ml in the original solution. Analytical results showed that contents of arsenic in a campus wastewater and a river water were 8.2ng/ml and l.0ng/ml, respectively, and their recoveries were 93${\%}$ and 90${\%}$ in water samples which a given amount of arsenic was added into. From above result, it could be concluded that this method was applicable to the determination of arsenic in various kinds of water at low ng/ml levels.

  • Most of ready-mixed concrete plants have the problem of construction waste sludge, which pollutes environment and causes economic loss due to the discard and increasing the cost of concrete. Thus, a recycling of the cement sludge has been strongly desired as one of their solution. This research is to the study on the recycling of the cement sludge, especially the study on the hydration control by the sodium gluconate as a set-retarder. The set-retarder can delay the hydration of the cement included in the sludge water, so that the sludge water can be substituted with some of new cement without the property of the cement. And it invests the effect of the sodium gluconate to the hydration of the cement in suspension. The degree of hydration of cement may be controlled by adding the sodium gliconate. The hydration delay time is observed that depends on the concentration of residual sodium gloconate, not how long the cement has been hydrated before the addition of the sodium gluconate.

  • Pulping of paper mulberry (Broussonetia kazinoki) white bast has been examined by novel atmospheric pressure pulping methods. The viscosity of pulp has been found to be highly sensitive and variable with pulping methods. Therefore, selections of pulping chemicals and conditions are very important. Two kinds of pulping procedures were employed for the high viscosity pulp manufacturing. The one is ammonium oxalate treatment and the other is sodium chlorite and acetic acid treatment. Not only chemical components and pulp yields which of paper mulberry white bast but also water retention value (WRV), whiteness index, yellowness index, and colors of every pulp were examined. The hot water, 1% NaOH, and ethanol-benzene extractives which of paper mulberry white bast were 4.48%, 28.45%, and 2.84%, respectively. The contents of holocellulose, lignin, and ash were 90.66%, 1.05%, and 2.18%, respectively. In the pulp yields, group 1 which treated with only ammonium oxalate were 77.04-81.71%, group 2 which treated with ammonium oxalate and acidified sodium chlorite separately and washed between first and second stages were 64.15-83.90%, group 3 which treated with ammonium oxalate and acidified sodium chlorite separately and not washed between first and second stages were 57.35-73.17%, and group 4 which treated with mixed ammonium oxalate and acidified sodium chlorite were 66.58-68.43%. The pulps treated with acidified sodium chlorite showed high whiteness index, but the pulps treated with only ammonium oxalate showed high yellowness index. Variations in the combinations of treatments resulted in different pulp characteristics.

  • Marine pathogenic bacteria, such as Streptococcus parauberis, Edwardsiella tarda and Vibrio harveyi, can cause lethal infections in farmed fish, ozone and antibiotics, are employed to sterilize waters used for rearing fish to mitigate this threat. The most widely used method is treatment with sodium hypochlorite solution. However, the maintenance of a constant concentration of chlorine in rearing waters can be difficult. We investigated the potential of a mixed oxidant (MO) solution generated by electrolysis of sea water to improve water quality. We measured the survival rates of fish pathogenic bacteria exposed to different concentrations of MO (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 MO) and sodium hypochlorite (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 ppm) for various lengths of time (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 min). We found a time-dependent decrease in the survival rates of the tested pathogenic microorganisms. The sterilization effect of the MO solution on pathogenic organisms was greater than that of sodium hypochlorite for gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. We conclude that MO solution produced by electrolysis could be used to maintain a constant chlorine concentration in aquaculture systems.

  • The changes of water absorption and surface area of polydimethylsiloxane-5-fluorouracil devices containing different water soluble additives such as sodium chloride, glycerine, poly-propylene glycol(PPG 400), and polyethylene oxide(PEO 400, 400 and 2000) were investigated. It was confirmed that carriers controlled water absorption and swelling of the devices in the aqueous solutions. The water absorption and the swelling were affected by the osmotic pressure and ionic strength of the aqueous solutions.
