  • The effects of solid and dispersant concentration was investigated by wet-sieving method for knowing the amount of coarse particle in fine powders. In the work alumina powders, sodium hexametaphosphate and sodium polyacrylate were used for preparing slurry. It was confirmed that the coarse particle mass increased by increasing alumina concentration and decreasing dispersant concentration. With systematic measurements we know that the alumina powder and dispersant of one weight percent(1.0wt%) were proper quantity for coarse particle mass measuring, respectively. Sodium polyacrylate as dispersant showed higher coarse particle mass than sodium hexametaphosphate. The sieve mass was decreased according to increase of experiment number. Based on experiments it was considered that wet-sieving method is good tool for measuring a coarse particle mass in fine powders.

  • An analytical method of sodium polyacrylate in processed food products was developed and monitored by using size-exclusion chromatography. GF-7M HQ column and UV/VIS detector were selected based on peak shape and linearity. Flow rate, column oven temperature, and mobile phase were selected as 0.6 mL/min, $45^{\circ}C$, and 50 mM sodium phosphate buffer of pH 9.0, respectively. Samples for analysis of sodium polyacrylate were extracted with 50 mM sodium phosphate buffer of pH 7.0 for 3 hr at $20^{\circ}C$ and 150 rpm. Analytical method validation revealed proper selectivity and calibration curve was selected in the range of 50-500 mg/L, and correlation coefficient of calibration curve was more than 0.9985. Limit of detection of sodium polyacrylate was 10.95 mg/kg and limit of quantification was 33.19 mg/kg. Accuracy and coefficient of variation for sodium polyacrylate analysis was 99.6-127.6%, 3.0-8.3% for intra-day and 94.3-121.9%, 1.3-2.6% for inter-day, respectively. Sodium polyacrylate was detected in 40 samples among monitored 125 processed food products. Detected contents were less than 0.2%, limited by the Food Additives Code. Results suggest the established size-exclusion chromatography method could be used to analyze sodium polyacrylate in processed food products.

  • Sodium polyacrylate (PAANa) was synthesized by inverse emulsion polymerization method to absorb excess water in concrete. Liquid paraffin was used as a continuous phase. Acrylic acid (AA) was neutralized by aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (8 M). Different amount of N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) was used as a crosslinking agent to change crosslinking density of the synthesized PAANa. The size distribution of synthesized particles was measured by particle size analyzer. Swelling ratio of crosslinked PAANa was evaluated from the equation in D. I. water, cement aqueous solution, and $Ca(OH)_2$ aqueous solution. The FTIR spectroscopy was used to characterize $Ca^{2+}$ ion interaction with PAANa. Incorporation of 1.0 wt% PAANa into cement increased compressive and flexural strength approximately 30% and 10%, respectively, compared with those of ordinary portland cement.

  • Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of addition of sodium polyacrylate (SPA) to a phytasesupplemented diet on the performance and phosphorus (P) retention of chicks. In experiment 1, chicks were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments which were fed from 7 to 21 days of age: i) basal diet (low nonphytate phosphorus (0.23% NPP)); ii) basal with 250 U/kg diet of phytase; iii) as (ii) with 2.5 g/kg diet of SPA; and iv) as (ii) with 5.0 g/kg diet of SPA. In experiment 2, three replicates, each with three chicks, were fed from 7 to 28 days of age the basal diet (0.23% NPP) with supplementation of phytase (0, 300, 600, 900 U/kg diet) and SPA (0, 2.5 g/kg diet) in a $4{\times}2$ factorial arrangement. In Experiment 1, feed efficiency was improved and excreted P was 10% less with phytase supplementation. However, the addition of SPA did not affect performance or P excretion. Dietary SPA supplementation to the diets showed significantly higher amounts of P retention, and highest values were observed in chicks fed 2.5 g/kg of the SPA-supplemented diet. In Experiment 2, feed efficiency was improved with phytase supplementation, and the addition of SPA showed significant improvement in feed efficiency. Excreted P was significantly lower in chicks fed SPA-supplemented diets, and the retained P coefficient improved with SPA supplementation. In conclusion, the increased transit time of digesta with suitable supplementation levels of SPA may allow phytase activity to be more effective in the degradation of phytate, and improve P retention.

  • Ground Calcium Carbonate, among paper coating pigments, will influence less dispersant demand, less binder demand, increase coating solids from 58% to 70%, which means high speed coating, less shrinkage during drying, less energy consumption, more uniform coverage of fibers. The quality point of view of Ground Calcium Carbonate, brightness, particle size, Particle size distribution, hardness, impurities content are important. More important factors of Ground Calcium Carbonate which influence the paper coating process are dispersion mechanisms and their effects. The study was made to investigate the effect of Ground Calcium Carbonate dispersion by sodium salt of polyacrylate dispersant composition and dispersion condition. Basic tests such as physical, optical and chemical were perfumed, and dispersion effects were investigated by different conditions. The results showed that the type of dispersant affected the dispersion effects, and the Ground Calcium Carbonate has critical dispersant demand.

  • Reactions of polyacrylic acid with hydroxyapatite, enamel and dentin were examined using infrared spectroscopy for the detection of $COO^-$ ions bonded to substrates. And also atomic aboscorption spectrophotometry and visible spectrophotometry were used to analyze the concentrations of calcium and phosphorus in the filtered solutions. The results were as follows. 1. Chemical adhesion of poly acrylic acid to hydroxyapatite, enamel and dentin was observed by infrared spectroscopy. 2. More calcium and phosphorus were detected in the filtered solutions of sodium polyacrylate-reacted specimens than in the filtered solutions of deionized Water-reacted specimens. 3. Mechanism of adhesion of polyacrylate to substrates is postulated that the bond is ionic in nature by displacement of $Ca^{2-}$ and ${PO_4}^3$ ions from the surface of substrates.

  • A series of superabsorbents based on acrylic acid (AA), sodium acrylate, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid, N,N'-methylene bis-acrylamide (MBA) were prepared by inverse suspension polymerization. These hydrogels were further crosslinked on the surface with polyethylene glycol-600 (PEG-600). The water absorbency or swelling behaviors for these xerogels in water and 0.9% saline solutions, both under free condition and under load were investigated. Absorption characteristics of these hydrogels were found to depend on nature and concentration of crosslinker in the system. It was also found that the saline absorption was significantly improved as the incorporation of AMPS in the polymer was increased. The surface crosslinking introduced in the polymers was found to improve the absorption under load characteristics without lowering the free water absorption capacities of the polymer to a considerable extent.

  • By considering the storage temperatures of agricultural products, three types of PCMs $(K_1$, $K_2$, $K_3$) were developed to be used in temperature ranges of $0{\sim}5^{\circ}C$, $5{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ and $10{\sim}15^{\circ}C$, $K_1$ PCM for $0{\sim}5^{\circ}C$ was developed by mixture of $C_{14}H_{30}$ and soduim polyacrylate, and $K_2$ PCM for $5{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ and $K_3$ PCM for $10{\sim}15^{\circ}C$ were mixture of $C_{14}H_{30}$, $C_{18}H_{38}$ and soduim polyacrylate with different composition ratio. 'The target temperatures of cold chain system were set at $7^{\circ}C$, $13^{\circ}C$, and $17^{\circ}C$ with $K_{1-3}$, $K_{2-3}$ and $K_{3-1}$ PCMs, respectively. The times to reach the target temperatures in the storage chamber were 21 hours, 18 hours, and 61 hours with $K_1$, $K_2$, and $K_3$ PCMs, respectively. The performances of natural convection type and forced convection of the temperature controlled portable container were analyzed Apples were stored in the portable container of $5^{\circ}C$, and temperatures at surface and center were measured. The initial temperature of the apple was $25^{\circ}C$. The temperatures of apple at the surface and the center were $15^{\circ}C$ and $16^{\circ}C$, respectively, after 5 hours with natural convection type. However, the temperatures at the surface and the center were already reached to $7^{\circ}C$ within 1 hour with forced convection type. The forced convection type showed the better performance and the temperatures of portable container were maintained more than 15 hours.

  • The relationship between texture and rheological properties of mascara(oil-in-water emulsion) was analyzed in this study. The final mascara product and gelling agents(2.0 wt%) used therein, such as hydroxyethylcellulose(HC), carboxymethylcellulose(CMC), hectorite, sodium magnesium silicate (SMS), hydroxyethyl acrylate/sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer(HS), and polyacrylate 13/polyisobutene/polysorbate 20 (PPP), were measured for rheological properties. As a result, HS and PPP showed the highest adhesiveness which were related to the volumizing effect of mascara. The viscosities of HC, SMS, and HS were measured at the stress range of $1{\sim}1,000s^{-1}$. SMS, with the lowest storage modulus range of $100{\sim}1,000s^{-1}$, affected the mascara in terms of smooth texture. The results of this study suggest that the rheology of gelling agents used influences the final texture of the mascara.
