Extinction Coefficient of Ag Nanofluids Manufactured by Chemical Reduction Method (화학적 환원법으로 제작한 은나노유체의 흡광계수)

  • In this study, we prepare the Ag nanofluids synthesized by the chemical reduction method and measure the extinction coefficient of those nanofluids at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The Ag nanofluids are synthesized by the chemical reduction method using silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) and sodium borohydride ($NaBH_4$) in water and ethylene glycol (EG). For stable dispersion of Ag particles in the base liquids, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) is added as a surfactant. The extinction coefficient of manufactured Ag nanofluids is measured by an in-house developed measurement system at the wavelength of 632.8 nm. The results show that the extinction coefficient of water-based and EG-based Ag nanofluids is linearly increased with respect to the particle loadings. Moreover, it is shown that the extinction coefficient of EG-based Ag nanofludis is higher than that of water-based Ag nanofluids. Finally we compare the experimental results with both the Maxwell-Garnett model and Rayleigh scattering approximation model, and they demonstrate that the Rayleigh scattering approximation model is reasonably predict the extinction coefficient of Ag nanofluids using hydraulic diameter of silver nanoparticle.

  • A 100 W fuel cell system using chemical storage method has been applied for a propulsion system of the SUAV(Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). A fuel cell and battery have been combined for both the small/light hydrogen generation control system and the hybrid power supply system. A small hydrogen generation device was implemented to utilize NaBH4 aqueous solution and dead-end type PEMFC system, which were evaluated on the ground and by the flight tests. The system pressurized at a 45kpa stably operates and get higher fuel efficiency. The pressure inside of the hydrogen generation control system was maintained at between 45 kPa and 55 kPa. The 100W fuel cell system satisfies the required weight and power consumption rate as well as the propulsion system, and the fuel cell system performance was demonstrated through flight test.

  • Hollow Sn and Pb nanoparticles have been prepared by a rapid injection of an aqueous solution of $SnCl_2$- poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP, surfactant) and $Pb(OAc)_2${\cdot}$3H_2O-PVP$ into an aqueous solution of sodium borohydride (reducing agent) in simple, one-pot reaction at room temperature under an argon atmosphere, respectively. The two hollow nanoparticles have been fully characterized by TEM, HRTEM, SAED, XRD, and EDX analyses. Upon exposure to air, the black Pb hollow nanoparticles are gradually transformed into a mixture of Pb, litharge (tetragonal PbO), massicot (orthorhombic PbO), and $Pb_5O_8$. The order and speed of mixing of the reactants between the metal precursor-PVP and the reductant solutions and stoichiometry of all the reactants are crucial factors for the formation of the two hollow nanocrystals. The Sn and Pb hollow nanoparticles were produced only when 1:(1.5-2) and 1:3 ratios of the Sn and Pb precursors to $NaBH_4$ were employed with a rapid injection, respectively.

  • 6-[1-(4-Ribitylanilino)ethyl]-1,3,7-trimethyllumazine (2), which is related to pteridine moiety of methanopterin, was synthesized. 4-Ribitylaniline derivative was prepared from D-ribose and N-benzoyl-4-bromoaniline (7) as the starting materials through several steps. 6-Acetyl-1,3,7-trimethyllumazine (4) was obtained from the reaction of 4-amino-1,3-dimethyI-5-nitrosouracil (3) with 2,4-pentanedione by Timmis reaction. Compound 4 was converted to 6-(1-chloroethyl)-1,3,7-trimethyllumazin (6) by the reduction with sodium borohydride and followed by chlorination with thionyl chloride. The nucleophilic displacement reaction of compound 6 with 4-(2,3:4,5-di-O-iso-propylidene-D-ribityl)aniline (13) in anhydrous DMF yielded 6-[1-{4-(2,3:4,5-di-O-isopropylidene-D-ribityl)anilino}ethyl]-1,3,7-trimethyllumazine (14). The target molecule 2 was obtained by the hydrolysis of compound 14 in the presence of an acid catalyst.

The Electrochemical Characteristics of MEA with Pt/Cross-Linked SPEEK-HPA Composite Membranes/Pt-Ru for Water Electrolysis (수전해용 Pt/공유가교 SPEEK-HPA 복합막/Pt-Ru MEA의 전기화학적 특성)

  • The e1ectrocatalytic properties of heteropolyacids(HPAs) entrapped in covalently cross-linked sulfonated polyetheretherketone(CL-SPEEK/HPA) membranes have been studied for water electrolysis. The HPAs, including tungstophosphoric acid(TPA), molybdophosphoric acid(MoPA), and tungstosilicic acid(TSiA) were used as additives in the composite membranes. The MEA was prepared by a non-equilibrium impregnation-reduction(I-R) method, using reducing agent, sodium borohydride(NaBH4) and tetraamineplatinum(II) chloride(pt(NH$_3$)$_4$Cl$_2$). The electrocatalytic properties of composite membranes such as the cell voltage were in the order of magnitude CL-SPEEKlMoPA40 (wt%) > /TPA30 > /TSiA40. In the optimum cell applications for water electrolysis, the cell voltage of PtlPEM/Pt-Ru MEA with CL-SPEEKlTPA30 membrane was 1.75 V at 80$^{\circ}$C and I A/cm$^2$ and this voltage carried lower than that of 1.81 V of Nafion 117. Consequently, in regards of electrochemical and mechanical characteristics and oxidation durability, the newly developed CL-SPEEKITPA30 composite membrane exhibited a better performance than the others, but CLSPEEKlMoPA40 showed the best electrocatalytic activity (1.71 Vat 80$^{\circ}$C and 1 A/cm$^2$) among the composite membranes.

  • Hepatotoxic cyanobacteria, Microcystis species, were collected from the Nakdong River and we could isolate hepatotoxins, microcystin-LR and microcystin-RR, which are also strong inhibitors of protein phosphatase 1 and 2A. From the microcystins, several microcystin derivatives were synthesized and tested on the mouse toxicity in order to establish the structure-activity relationship. Esterification od carboxyl groups of Glu and MeAsp residue produced nontoxic compounds. However, when we reduced the Mdha residue with sodium borohydride into Ala residue, toxicity was still maintained. Also, the change of guanidyl moiety of Arg residue in microcystin-LR into dimethylpyrimidyl moiety did not change the toxicity of microcystins as well. Thus the carboxyl groups seem to play important roles in binding with protein phosphatase 1 and 2A, whereas Mdha residue and the guanidyl moiety of Arg residue do not.

Efficiency of a Direct Absorption Solar Collector using Ag Nanofluids Synthesized by Chemical Reduction Method (화학적 환원법으로 제조된 은나노유체를 사용한 직접흡수식 태양열 집열기의 효율)

  • In this paper, the water-based Ag nanofluids are synthesized by the chemical reduction method and their extinction coefficients are measured by an in-house developed measurement device. The Ag nanofluids are manufactured by the chemical reduction method with the mixing of silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) and sodium borohydride ($NaBH_4$) in an aqueous solution of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). The extinction coefficients of Ag nanofluids are measured by means of the in-house developed apparatus at a wavelength of 632.8nm according to the particle volume fractions. The results show that the extinction coefficient of water-based Ag nanofluids increases with the increase of nanoparticle concentrations. Finally, the temperature field and efficiency of direct absorption solar collector (DASC) are analytically estimated based on the measured extinction coefficient of water-based Ag nanofluids. The results indicate that the direct absorption solar collectors using nanofluids have the feasibility to improve the efficiency of conventional flat-plate solar collectors without using an absorber plate.

  • For environmental remediation of a contaminated groundwater plume, the use of zero-valent metal represents one of the latest innovative technologies. In this study, the effects of denitrification by zero-valent iron adsorbed in mesoporous silicas have been studied for groundwater contaminant degradation. The mesoporous silica was functionalized with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS) ligands and the zero-valent iron precipitated in the mesopore of granular silica was made by $FeCl_2$ and $NaBH_4$. Hydrogen was exchanged with $Fe^{2+}$ ions in the granular silicas. And then the ions were reduced by sodium borohydride in the mesoporous silicas. The surface area of the silica determined via the BET method ranged from 858 to $1275m^2/g$. The reductive reaction of nitrate-nitrogen indicated that the degradation of nitrate-nitrogen appeared to be pseudo first-order with the observed reaction rate constant kobs ($0.1619h^{-1}$) and to be directly proportional to the specific surface area. Therefore, the mesoporous silica with nano zero-valent iron proposed as a novel treatment strategy for contaminated groundwater was successfully implemented herein for the removal of nitrate-nitrogen.

  • Carotenoid pigments from muscle of mussel, Mytilus coruscus, and blue mussel edulis, were separated by thin layer and column chromatography. The isolated carotenoids were identified by comparative test with reference carotenoids, reduction with sodium borohydride, isomerization with iodine and absorption spectrophotometry. The carotenoid content in the muscle of mussel were 0.4mg% in male and 2.7mg% in female, and the carotenoids were composed of 23.4%, 33.4% mytiloxanthin, 26.3%, 22.5% 3, 4, 3'-trihydroxy-7', $8'-didehydro-{\beta}-carotene$, 24.8%, 22.8% pectenoxanthin, 14.0%, 9.9% pectenolone and 5.1%, 6.1% diatoxanthin in male and female, respectively. While, the carotenoid contents in the muscle of blue mussel were 1.1mg% in male and 3.2mg% in female, and the carotenoids were composed of 33.8%, 35.6% mytiloxanthin, 28.4%, 44.7% pectenoxanthin, 18.1%, 5.0% diatoxanthin, 9.7%, 8.7% pectenolone and 5.5%, 3.1%, 3, 4, 3'-trihydroxy-7', $8'-didehydro-{\beta}-carotene$ in male and female, respectively.

  • The studies on the carotenoids in the viscera of abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) have been-carried out. The pigments were extracted with acetone-methanol mixture (4 : 1) from the viscera of abalones which were caught around the coastal water of Korea from March to August. The individual carotenoid in the extracts was separated and purified by the silica gel TLC, $Mg(OH)_2$ impregnated paper chromatography and $Mg_2(OH)_2CO_3$ TLC. The isolated eleven carotenoids were investigated and identified by epoxide test, partition test, reduction with sodium borohydride, alkaline hydrolysis, co-chromatography and comparative test with reference carotenoids and electronic and IR absorption spectrophotometry. ${\alpha}$-Carotene, ${\beta}$-carotene. lutein, zeaxanthin, siponaxanthin, siponein, fucoxanthin, loroxan-thin-like and fucoxanthinol-like have been identified among the eleven carotenoids isolated. It has been found that fucoxanthin, on alkaline treatment, was transformed to the product of which chromophore was the same one as fucochrome and semifucoxanthol. Among the identified nein carotenoids siphonaxanthin, siponein, fucoxanthin, loroxanthin-like and fucoxanthinol-like have not been reported previously to be contained in the shellfish.
