Chromium(III) recovery from tanning wastewater by means of adsorption on activated carbon and elution with sulfuric acid was studied. Tests were carried out at laboratory scale on an effluent of industrial origin. Initially, proteinaceous materials and fats were separated via sieving followed by ultrafiltration. The chemical composition of the sample thus precleansed was (in g/L): 1.09 chromium(III); 10.36 sulfate; 11.10 sodium; 9.57 chloride; 0.40 proteinaceous materials; and 0.20 fats. Adsorptions were made at 20, 30, and $40^{\circ}C$, establishing what temperature favored chromium(III) uptake. At $40^{\circ}C$, the maximum cation fixation was 40.2 mg/g, and the lowest content in an equilibrium solution was 3.9 mg/L. As regards sodium, chloride, and sulfate, the concentrations before and after the treatment were similar. Likewise, it was found that protons were also retained, modifying the pH of the liquid medium. Adsorption isotherms were analyzed using the Langmuir, Temkin, and Freundlich models. Finally, the extraction of the adsorbed tanning agent with sulfuric acid was evaluated. A recovery of 96.5% was achieved with 0.9 N at $70^{\circ}C$ (13.23 g/L $Cr^{3+}$; 42.98 g/L sulfate; and 0.40 g/L NaCl).
Corynebacterium glutamicum is one of the well-studied industrial strain that is used for the production of nucleotides and amino acids. Recently, it has also been studied as a possible producer of organic acids such as succinic acid, based on its ability to produce organic acids under an oxygen deprivation condition. In this study, we conducted the optimization of medium components for improved succinate production from C. glutamicum under an oxygen deprivation condition by Plackett-Burman design and applied a response surface methodology. A Plackett-Burman design for ten factors such as glucose, ammonium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, potassium phosphate ($K_2HPO_4$ and $KH_2PO_4$), iron sulfate, manganese sulfate, biotin, thiamine, and sodium bicarbonate was applied to evaluate the effects on succinate production. Glucose, ammonium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, and dipotassium phosphate were found to have significant influence on succinate production, and the optimal concentrations of these four factors were sequentially investigated by the response surface methodology using a Box-Behnken design. The optimal medium components obtained for achieving maximum concentration of succinic acid were as follows: glucose 10 g/l, magnesium sulfate 0.5 g/l, dipotassium phosphate ($K_2HPO_4$) 0.75 g/l, potassium dihydrogen phosphate ($KH_2PO_4$) 0.5 g/l, iron sulfate 6 mg/l, manganese sulfate 4.2 mg/l, biotin 0.2 mg/l, thiamine 0.2 mg/l, and sodium bicarbonate 100 mM. The parameters that differed from a normal BT medium were glucose changed from 40 g/l to 10 g/l, dipotassium phosphate ($K_2HPO_4$) 0.5 g/l changed to 0.75 g/l, and ammonium sulfate ($(NH_4)_2SO_4$) 7 g/l changed to 0 g/l. Under these conditions, the final succinic acid concentration was 16.3 mM, which is about 1.46 fold higher than the original medium (11.1 mM) at 24 h. This work showed the improvement of succinate production by a simple change of media components deduced from sequential optimization.

The influence of operation time on electrokinetic restoration was investigated to remove salts from sulfate-accumulated greenhouse soil. Operation time is directly related to the process cost, therefore, we determined the relationship between operation time and removal of salts. Nitrate and sodium were removed almost completely within 2 weeks, chloride and calcium was removed in proportion to the operation time. Sulfate was accumulated at the center of anode and cathode. The soil electrical conductivity (EC), an indicator for soil salinity, showed similar shape with the residual sulfate after electrokinetic treatment. The soil EC was not changed after 2 weeks, however, the energy consumption increased with operation time. Based on the experimental results, most salts except sulfate were removed within 2 weeks, but sulfate was not removed during same time period. For the further removal of sulfate, longer operation time is in need.

The present study evaluates the resistance to sulfate attack of cement matrix with or without silica fume. The main variable was the replacement levels of silica fume. In order to introduce sulfate attack to cement matrix, mortars and pastes was exposed to sodium sulfate solution for 510 days. Visual examination, expansion and compressive strength loss of mortars in addition to characteristics of pore for the paste samples were regularly investigated. From the test results, it was clearly observed that the cement matrix with silica fume was very resistant to sulfate attack irrespective of the replacement levels of silica fume. However, the severe deterioration due to sulfate attack was found in cement matrix without silica fume.
Micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) was used to remove cadmium from an aqueous solution using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a surfactant. Operational parameters such as initial permeate flux, retentate pressure, initial cadmium concentration, pH solution, molecular weight cut-off (MWCO), and molar ratio of cadmium to SDS were investigated. Removal efficiency of cadmium from an aqueous solution increased with an increase of retentate pressure, pH solution and molar ratio of cadmium to SDS, and decreased with an increase of initial permeate flux. Higher removal efficiency of cadmium from the aqueous solution was achieved using lower MWCO (smaller membrane pore size). Under optimized experimental condition, cadmium removal efficiency reached 74.6 % within an hour. Using MEUF-ACF hybrid process the removal efficiency of both cadmium and SDS was found to be over 90%.
Electrochemical behaviors of bovine hemoglobin (Hb) at an acetylene black paste electrode based on the enhancement effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were investigated. In the optimal conditions, a very weak reduction peak was observed at an acetylene black paste electrode for hemoglobin in the absence of SDS. However, the reduction peak current increased remarkably after the addition of 4.0 × 10?4 mol L?1 SDS, suggesting that SDS exhibits obvious enhancement effect to the determination of hemoglobin. All the experimental parameters, such as pH value, concentration of SDS, accumulation time and accumulation potential were optimized for hemoglobin analysis. The proposed method possesses high sensitivity (detection limit is 3.0 × 10?9 mol L?1), wide linearity (6.0 × 10?9 to 6.0 × 10?7 mol L?1), rapid response and low cost. Finally, the method was successfully employed to determine hemoglobin in a spiked sample.
The effects of salts which was used as a catalysis in formation of $\alpha$-calciumusulfate hemihydrate from dicalcium sulfate hydrate were investigated on the hydration of $\alpha$-calciumsulfate hemihydrate. The hydration of $\alpha$-calciumsulfate hemihydrate was studied by the measurements of crystalline water, heat evolution. Also the hydrates were analyzed by XRD, DSC and SEM. The promotive effect each salts on the hydration was as follows: NaCl>NH4Cl>NaNO3>NH4NO3, and the hydration rate was accelerated with concentration of salts. The effect of Al2(SO4)3 and potassium sodium tartrate on the hydration was slmilar to water, whereas sodium succinate and gelatin retarded the hydration in comparision with water. These salts affected the hydration time but total heat evoution was similar.
The optimum conditions was synthesized for the formation of Magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) by air bubbling with the suspensions obtained by mixing Ferrous sulfate ($FeSO_4\cdot 7H_2O$) and Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution in various values equivalent ratio($R=2NaOH/FeSO_4$) were studied. The changes of the structure were measured with XRD, $EM and BET. Equivalent ratio R: 0.65 was synthesized Goethite ($\alpha$-FeOOH), which becomes Maghemite ($\gamma=Fe_2O_3$) by dehydration, reduction and oxidation process. At the equivalent ratio over 1 (R>1), Magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) was synthesized directly. The oxygen-deficient Magnetite ($Fe_3O_{4-\delta}$), which is obtained by flowing $H_2$ gas(100 ml/min) through the synthesis Magnetite at 350$\circ$C for 4 hr. By using it, was researched the decomposition reaction of $CO_2$. $CO_2$ was decomposed nearly 100% in 45 minutes by the oxygen-deficient Magnetite.

The microcapsules containing ethanol in a water-soluble polymer shell could be formed by the spray-drying technique. A mixed solution of ethanol, water and a water-soluble polymer is spray-dried at the lowest possible temperature to obtain a powder product in which the water is substantially removed and the ethanol is encapsulated in water-soluble polymer shell because of the hydrophillic property of polymer and permeability difference between ethanol and water. In this study, the effect of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) on the ethanol content, ethanol encapsulation efficiency and yield were investigated to maximize the microencapsulation of ethanol.

The interaction between anion and zwitterionic surfactants was investigated by means of surface tension, NMR spectroscopy, and fluorescence studies. These systems are N-tetradecyloxymethyl-N,N-dimethyl betaine ($C_{14}$, TDB), N-octadecyloxymethyl-N,Ndimethyl betaine ($C_{18}$, ODB), and sodium dodecylethoxy sulfate (SDE). These systems show a composition dependency in micellar properties. When the molar fraction of TDB and ODB was about 0.6, the cmc values of these systems showed minima, whereas the solubilized amount of a water insoluble dye, NMR line width showed maxima. These changes comes from the intramolecular complexes formed in the mixed micelles. The complexes are due to the electrostatic interaction of oppositely charged head groups of betaine and sodium dodecylethoxy sulfate. A comparison of betaine and SDE alkyl methylene group line widths to those of n-methyl group indicates that the interior of the micelle in the restricted region is more immobile than the head group.
