  • It is characterized and classified as the type of red brown glass beads to compare the chemical composition and manufacturing technique on the 141 samples in 12 sites of the Three Kingdom Period analyzed until now. It can be divided into three types according to the chemical composition of stabilizers(CaO & $Al_2O_3$) and soda raw materials(MgO & $K_2O$) on the red brown glass beads except one sample. Type I of high alumina glass is identified as the most common types that is 78.6 % of the distribution ratio at analytical samples and is excavated the most from ruin sites. In contrast, type II, 13.6 % of distribution ratio at analytical samples, is about 5 % CaO and $Al_2O_3$, MgO and $K_2O$ at around 1.5 % is similar to the composition of plant ash glass. Type III is that the content of CaO is higher than $Al_2O_3$ and the content of MgO and $K_2O$ is below 1.5 %. It is the same as the composition of natron glass and its share is the lowest as 7.9 %. Of these, type III is divided into two types according to the content of MgO and $K_2O$. It is identified that manufacturing technique of type I and II is drawing and type III is casting method with microscopic investigations. Type II and III is estimated that raw materials is different because is confirmed in the majority of ruins in spite of the fact that distribution ratio is very low. So, red brown glass beads distributed in Korea Peninsula are divided into three types of glass culture.

  • In this study, glass beads from Osan Sucheong were classified according to color into 10 groups. Among these groups, reddish brown, bluish green, and purplish blue were identified as the main colors of glass beads based on their large quantities in Osan Sucheong. The glass beads of these main colors were then classified according to their chemical compositions and and looked at the changing process. Based on the results, reddish brown and bluish green glass beads can both be divided into five types, and purplish blue glass beads can be divided into four types. Furthermore, according to continuity of type, it was identified as the main attributes that the reddish brown beads belong to two types, whereas the bluish green and purplish blue each belong to one type. Based on a review of primary attributes, beads of these three colors were identified as soda glass and high-alumina glass. The results indicate that these beads came from a single, consistent route of origin into the region. However, it is possible that glass beads came through various routes into Osan Sucheong in the $4^{th}$ century, because many types of chemical compositions have been detected for beads from this time.

  • ZnO thin films were deposited on a Si wafer and a soda lime glass using atomic layer deposition(ALD). The substrate temperature were between $130^{\circ}C{\sim}150^{\circ}C$. The deposition rate of the ZnO film was measured to be $2.72{\AA}$ per cycle. The films were analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM), X-ray diffractometer(XRD), and Auger electron spectroscopy(AES). Impurity-free ZnO thin films were obtained and the crystallinity was found to be dependant upon the substrate temperature.

  • In order to investigate the possibility of punching process of brittle material by ball impact, the effects of sealing materials about impact damage of soda-lime glass by small spheres were evaluated experimentally. The using of sealing materials in the development of perfect cone crack was more effective than no using of sealing materials. At the sealing materials condition, in the case of 5mm-thick specimen, Copper and PMMA sealing were more effective in producing a perfect cone formation than the other sealing materials. And in the case of 8mm-thick specimen, Aluminum sealing was most effective in producing a perfect cone formation. The impact velocity range over which perfect cones were formed was influenced by both the thickness of specimen and sealing materials. By a proper selection of sealing materials, the application fur industrial technology for hole (or nozzle) punching process of brittle materials is expected.

  • Brittle materials are very weak for impact because of typical characteristics which happen to be easily fractured with low fracture toughness and crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact due to small spheres, high contact pressure is occurred to impact surface and then local damage on specimen is developed, since there are little plastic deformations due to contact pressure compared to metals. This local damage is a dangerous factor which gives rise to final fracture of structures. In this research, the crack propagation process of soda lime glass by impact of small sphere is explained and the effects of the constraint conditions of impact spheres and materials for the material damage were studied by using soda-lime glass. that is the effects for the materials and sizes of impact ball, thickness of specimen and residual strength. Especially, this research has focused on the damage behavior of ring crack, cone crack and several kinds of cracks.

  • Ultrasonic machining (USM) is suitable for machining hard, brittle and non-conductive materials such as silicon, glass and ceramics. Usually, when micro holes are machined on glass by USM, roundness of hole entrance is poor and cracks appear around the hole exit. In this paper the machining characteristics were studied for roundness improvement and exit crack prevention. From experiments, the tool bending and the shape of tool tip affect hole roundness. When the tool tip is hemispherical, good roundness of holes was obtained. The feedrate and the rotational speed of the tool affect the exit crack. With the machining conditions of 150 rpm in spindle speed and $0.5\;{\mu}m/s$ in feedrate, micro holes with less than $100\;{\mu}m$ in diameter were machined without an exit crack.

  • The influence of spindle immersion depth on the determination of glass melt viscosity was examined in rotating cylinder method. The exact adjustment of spindle immersion depth into soda lime silicate standard glass melts could be peformed by self-constructed electric system. The results showed a slight dependence of viscosity value on the immersion depth change of spindle shaft. The viscosity error per unit length of spindle was 0.4%/mm under the present cylinder dimension.

  • Polishing Processes are widely used in the glass, optical, die and semiconductor industry and are conventionally carried out using abrasive slurry and a polishing pad. But abrasive slurry process has a weak point that is high cost of handling of used slurry and hard controllability of slurry. Recently, some researches have attempted to solve these problems and one method is the development of a fixed abrasive pad. FAP has a couple of advantages including clean environment, lower CoC, easy controllability and higher form accuracy. But FAP also has a weak point that is need of dressing because of glazing and loading. The paper introduces the basic concept and fabrication technique of FAP using hydrophilic polymers with swelling characteristics in water and explains the self-conditioning phenomenon. Experimental results demonstrate to achieve nano surface roughness of soda lime glass for optical application

  • The carbon nanotube emitters for field emission displays were fabricated by screen printing techniques. The pastes for screen printing are composed of organic binders, carbon nanotubes, and some additive materials. Then the pastes were printed on Cr-coated/Ag-printed soda-lime glass substrates. From the I-V characteristics, the turn-on field of SWNT was lower than that of MWNT. The decrease in the mesh size of screen masks resulted in decreasing the turn-on field and increasing the electron emission current. When the carbon nanotubes were mixed with glass frit, glass frit appeared to contribute to the vertically aligning of carbon nanotubes on glass.

  • The relative electrical conductivity of vacuum deposited Al films on a soda-lime(2947) and an alumino boro silicate(7809) glass was investigated with the variation of the relative humidity, temperature and film thickness. The structure and microstructure of Al films before and after exposure to the humidity wereexamined by the X-ray Diffractormenter(XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). As the relative humidity increased, the electrical conductivity of Al films on both glasses was decreased. However, the Al films on 7809 glass showed higher conductivity than that of 2947 glass under the same testing conditions. The decreasing of electrical conductivity was caused by the formation of Aluminum hydroxide which was made by the reaction between the aluminum films and water vapor.
