  • Purpose: The purpose of the study is to develop and to evaluate a internet-based social support program for the mothers of congenitally abnormal children. The theoretical basis of the study is the moderating effect model of social support theory (Cobb, 1976). Methods: In first phase, an internet support program was developed according to the practical web development stages proposed by Boling and Frick (2002). In the second phase, the internet support program was provided and evaluated to 18 mothers who reared congenitally abnormal children from March to May 2008. Results: In the first stage, demands of the program were collected from interviews of eighteen mothers of congenitally abnormal children of ages one to three. At the same time, literature review and validity of the contents were also examined. In the second stage, the correspondence of the program contents to the social support needed was also examined. In the third and fourth stages, prototype of the social program was prepared in documents and that of computer program was prepared. In the final stage, an internet-based web site was constructed. The social support provided by the web site were composed of informational support, emotional support and appraisal support including bulletin board system and chatting service. After program development, pre-tests and post-test were performed to investigate the effect of the program on maternal confidence and mood. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed rank test. The analysis showed that maternal confidence of post-test was improved than that of pre-test with statistically meaningful figure (Z=-2.54, p<.05). The positive mood of post-test was also improved than that of pre-test and the result was statistically supported (Z=-2.20, p<.05). Conclusion: It is suggestive that the internet based social support programs is accessible and appropriate service to congenitally abnormal children's mother. It is necessary to develop and use the internet based social support programs in public health system.

  • This study was conducted in order to identify factors that influence the will of self-reliance among workers participating in self-support programs. For this purpose, data were collected from self-support program participants in 2012 (1,301 participants in self-supporting labor programs and 128 in self-support community programs). Input variables analyzed as factors influencing the will of self-reliance were socio-demographic variables, self-esteem, and social capital. According to the results, first, self-supporting labor program participants' self-esteem was 2.328 out of 4 (S.M= .402) and it was somewhat lower than 2.406 (S.M=.404) in self-support community participants, but the difference was not significant. Self-supporting labor program participants' social capital was 2.980 out of 5 (S.M=.844), significantly lower than 3.356 (S.M=.815) in self-support community program participants. Self-supporting labor program participants' will of self-support was 4.150 out of 5 (S.M=.602), lower than 4.314 (S.M=.521) in self-support community program participants. Second, according to the results of regression analysis on self-support program participants' will of self-reliance, age (B=-.198, p<.001), self-esteem (B=.236, p<.001), and social capital (B=.166, p<.001) were found to have a significant effect. That is, the will of self-support was higher when age was young, when self-esteem was high, and when social capital was high. Based on these findings, this study suggested self-support policies, education systems, differentiated programs, etc. for enhancing self-support program participants' will of self-reliance.

The program duration was 8 weeks and consisted of two parts: parent education on understanding parent-child relationship, communication skill improvement, techniques of problem solving, non-punitive child rearing techniques; and the recognition and use of existing social support network including networking of the neighborhood resources. The pre-post test control group design was employed. The results are: the program is effective on bringing some positive changes on an three variables: parental attitudes toward their children, parenting satisfaction and attitudes toward the use of corporal punishment. Increased social support was found to have significant positive effect on the above variables except the attitudes toward corporal punishment. To decrease the risk factors as well as to increase the protective factors of child abuse, well designed parent education and social support program is recommended on every community level.
