  • As the internet has been used widely, many online communities have been appeared. Initially, many users used online communities for communication and information sharing. Recently, users start using online communities for building, maintaining, and extending social networks which they did in offline environments previously. The importance of online community is considered by many scholars and also companies to use it strategically. Therefore many studies have focused on exploring characteristics of online communities. Most of them have emphasized the importance of online community. Few study focuses on dynamics within online community. By using social network analysis (SNA), this study tries to explore dynamics of online community. Specially, By measuring the centrality of online community and tracing its changes, this study investigates how the relationships among participants in online communities have been changed over the time. Findings of this study indicate that, as participants has joined in an online community over the time, an opinion leader is appeared, and her/his power is changed.

  • After its inception in 1994, the Journal of the Microelectronics and Packaging Society has continued to make significant strides in the number and quality of publications within its field. The interest in the microelectronics and packaging research has become more critical as consumer electronic products continue its increasing trend towards thinner and lighter devices that tests the boundaries of electronic devices. This study utilizes social network analysis of all published literature in the Journal for the past 22 years. Using the keywords and abstracts available within each individual article, the publications within the Journal has focused on major topics covering (1) flip chip, (2) reliability, (3) Cu, (4) IMC (intermetallic compounds), and (5) thin film. Using the social network relationship between keywords within articles, flip chip was closely associated with reliability, BGA (ball grid array), contact resistance, electromigration in many of the published research works within the Journal. From the centrality analysis, it was found that flip chip, reliability, Cu, thin film, IMC, and RF (radio frequency) to have a high degree of centrality suggesting these key areas of research have relatively high connectivity with other research topics within the Journal and is central to many of the research fields within the micro-electronics and packaging area. The cohesiveness analysis showed research clustering of five major cohesive sub-groups and was mapped to better understand the major area of research within this field. Research within the field of micro-electronics and packaging converges many disciplines of science and engineering. The continued evolution within this field requires an understanding of the rapidly changing industry environment and the consumer needs.

  • This study aims to analyze and compare centrality and brokerage measures of journal citation network focusing on textmining research. The analytic sample was 193 academic articles collected from 136 KCI journals published in 2018. The journal citation network was constructed based on citation relations. The characteristics, centralities, and brokerages of network was analyzed. The journal citation network consisted 136 nodes and 413 links with directed and weight. According to the five types of centrality(out-degree, in-degree, out-closeness, in-closeness, betweenness), journals of social sciences, engineering, and interdisciplinary research showed higher centrality. Social sciences, engineering and interdisciplinary research journals also showed higher brokerages as a result of brokerage analysis which identify five types of brokerage roles(coordinator, gatekeeper, representative, consultant, liaison). The centralities and brokerages of journals are positively correlated. This study suggested how to construct journal citation network from the articles focusing on certain topics. This was meaningful study in terms of conducting brokerage analysis and comparing it with centrality in the journal citation network.

  • In the context of knowledge sharing, network position has been a controversial subject. A central position in the network provides access to non-redundant knowledge, leading to more opportunities of knowledge sharing. On the other hand, as "bridging" relationships, its characteristics as a "weak tie" suggest innate lack of trust and reciprocity which is considered an impediment to share knowledge. This paper attempts to enlighten the underlying dynamic by examining the interaction between network centrality, motivation and ability in knowledge sharing. Furthermore, this paper examines the concept of knowledge sharing ability in depth by operationalizing the construct into three aspects: extensive and diverse knowledge, social media utilization ability and self-efficacy. The results show a partially supported three-way interaction, where the highest level of knowledge provision is reported when the employee has low network centrality, high autonomous motivation and high knowledge sharing ability, i.e. extensive and diverse prior knowledge. Though all models indicate strong associations between network centrality and knowledge sharing, this suggests an even greater power of motivation and ability that gives the strength to overcome unfavorable environments of peripheral position. Therefore, this paper offers an alternative explanation to the existing debate whether network centrality positively or negatively influences knowledge sharing.

  • The robustness of a supply chain (i.e., the ability to cope with external and internal disruptions and disturbances) becomes more critical in ensuring the success of a construction project because the supply chain of today's construction project includes more and diverse suppliers. Previous studies indicate that topological features of the supply chain critically affect its robustness, but there is still a great challenge in characterizing and quantifying the impact of network topological features on its robustness. In this context, this study aims to identify network measures that characterize topological features of the supply chain and evaluate their impact on the robustness of the supply chain. Network centrality measures that are commonly used in assessing topological features in social network analysis are identified. Their validity in capturing the impact on the robustness of the supply chain was evaluated through an experiment using randomly generated networks and their simulations. Among those network centrality measures, the PageRank centrality and its standard deviation are found to have the strongest association with the robustness of the network, with a positive correlation coefficient of 0.6 at the node level and 0.74 at the network level. The findings in this study allows for the evaluation of the supply chain network's robustness based only on its topological design, thereby enabling practitioners to better design a robust supply chain and easily identify vulnerable links in their supply chains.

  • We construct product networks from the retail transaction dataset of an off-line department store. In the product networks, nodes are products, and an edge connecting two products represents the existence of co-purchases by a customer. We measure the quantities frequently used for characterizing network structures, such as the degree centrality, the closeness centrality, the betweenness centrality and the centralization. Using the quantities, gender, age, seasonal, and regional differences of the product networks were analyzed and network characteristics of each product category containing each product node were derived. Lastly, we analyze the correlations among the three centrality quantities and draw a marketing strategy for the cross-selling.

  • The task network which is formed of different individuals can be recognized as a social network. Therefore, the way to communicate with people inside or outside the network has considerable influence on their outcome. Moreover, the position on which a member stands in a network shows the different effects of the information systems supporting communication with others. In this paper, it is to be studied how personal CMC (computer-mediated communication) tools affect the mission that those who work for a network perform through diverse task networks. Especially, we focused on synchronicity of CMC. On this score, the perspective of Media Synchronicity Theory was taken that had been suggested by criticizing Media Richness Theory. It is the objective, from this perspective, to find which characteristics of networks make the value of IT supporting synchronicity high. In the research trends of social networks, there have been two traditional perspectives to explain the effect of network: embeddedness and diversity ones. These differ from the aspect which type of social network can provide much more economic benefits. As similar studies have been reported by various researchers, these are also divided into the bonding and bridging views which are based on internal and external tie, respectively, Size, density, and centrality were measured as the characteristics of personal task networks. Size means the level of relationship between members. It is the total number of other colleagues who work with a specific member for a certain project. It means, the larger the size of task network, the more the number of coworkers who interact each other through the job. Density is the ratio of the number of relationships arranged actually to the total number of available ones. In an ego-centered network, it is defined as the ratio of the number of relationship made really to the total number of possible ones between members who are actually involved each other. The higher the level of density, the larger the number of projects on which the members collaborate. Centrality means that his/her position is on the exact center of whole network. There are several methods to measure it. In this research, betweenness centrality was adopted among them. It is measured by the position on which one member stands between others in a network. The determinant to raise its level is the shortest geodesic that represents the shortest distance between members. Centrality also indicates the level of role as a broker among others. To verify the hypotheses, we interviewed and surveyed a group of employees of a nationwide financial organization in which a groupware system is used. They were questioned about two CMC applications: MSN with a higher level of synchronicity and email with a lower one. As a result, the larger the size of his/her own task network, the smaller its density and the higher the level of his/her centrality, the higher the level of the effect using the task network with CMC tools. Above all, this positive effect is verified to be much more produced while using CMC applications with higher-level synchronicity. Among the a variety of situations under which the use of CMC gives more benefits, this research is considered as one of rare cases regarding the characteristics of task network as moderators by focusing ITs for the operation of his/her own task network. It is another contribution of this research to prove empirically that the values of information system depend on the social, or comparative, characteristic of time. Though the same amount of time is shared, the social characteristics of users change its value. In addition, it is significant to examine empirically that the ITs with higher-level synchronicity have the positive effect on productivity. Many businesses are worried about the negative effect of synchronous ITs, for their employees are likely to use them for personal social activities. However. this research can help to dismiss the concern against CMC tools.
