The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of child/family allowance on total fertility rate by period. For this purpose, it formed pooled-time series data from 1980 to 2015 targeting 19 OECD countries that adopted the child allowance policies, and made a close inquiry into a variable-based relationship through the pooled-time series cross-section analysis. The results were as follows. The child allowance appeared to have a significant impact on fertility rate even after controlling for other variables. Such impact was shown to be more noticeable in countries that introduced a fertility encouragement mechanism within its child allowance program. Based on the results, this study suggested the necessity of stepping up a benefit for multi-child families by additionally adopting a fertility encouragement mechanism within the child allowance program, in order for the child allowance program in Korea to function as well as the fertility rate promotion down the road.
The purpose of this study was to explore the concepts of health among people with mobility disabilities in order to develop a new holistic model of health and to identify implications for social work practice. A qualitative study based on face-to-face interviews with people with mobility disabilities was conducted. Nine consumers and nine social workers with mobility disabilities participated in the study. Social constructionism, heuristic paradigm, empowerment paradigm, and strength perspectives were used to form conceptual foundations to guide the study. Study participants' holistic descriptions of the concept of health encompassed five domains: biological/physical, mental/emotional, financial, relationships with others, and spiritual. Participants described health as harmony among these five domains. Harmony indicates that all five domains contribute to the concept of health, and that each domain is related to the others. Participants also viewed disability and health as an interconnected whole, not separate concept. The conceptual model developed in this study expands on the existing concepts of health by considering multiple factors at the personal and environmental levels, as well as interactions among the factors and between the levels. The personal level has five domains: biological/physical, mental/emotional, spiritual, financial, and relationships with others. The environmental level has also five domains: relationship with others, financial, social programs, social attitudes toward peoplewith disabilities, and physical environment. All factors under the personal and environmental levels also affect each other. The holistic concept of health for people with disabilities is not solely a part of the person, but rather is a function of the interaction between the person and their environment. The study demonstrated that people with disabilities have strength and resiliency, and health is an attainable goal for them, particularly when environmental and cultural barriers are addressed. The focus of social work practice should be the removal of those barriers encountered by their consumers with disabilities, as well as, the enhancement of internal factors that facilitate well-being.
This study investigated the general characteristics of mobility disadvantaged persons with disabilities, and to suggest implications to ensure personal mobility with the greatest possible independence for the physically disabled in community. The survey questionnaire included the categories as follows: the general characteristics of the participants, the status of outing and mobility, usage of low-floor buses & taxi for the disabled, service improvement, and mobile support center. Data collected from 219 with physical disabilities were analyzed for this purpose by using descriptive statistics. The study results showed that 54.6% of the total tended to go out everyday, and 17.0% rarely. 53.4% could go out without any assistance, and the major obstacles not to go out were stairs and inconvenience of public transportation. 26.9% used low-floor buses, and 71.1% preferred to use taxi for the disabled. The average waiting time for the usage of low-flow buses and taxi was 66.57 minute and 42.65 minute, separately. 78.7% insisted that the function of mobile support center in the community should be expanded, whereas only 49.8% recognized the role of mobile support center. Based on the study results, the researchers suggested to facilitate access by persons with disabilities to mobility aids, and to improve the actual state of pedestrian environment. In addition, the function of mobile support center should be expanded to help the mobility disadvantaged persons live independently in community, thereby contributing to the promotion of their quality of life.

Objective: If non-surgical treatment fails, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) is recommended, and ARCR considers graft augmentation in consideration of size, direction, and re-tear. It is reported to have potential benefits by improving the healing rate as it can fill the gaps that have been left behind. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of structural changes observed after ARCR on muscle action through magnetic resonance imaging and to investigate the effect of appropriate physical therapy required for graft augmentation in the general ARCR rehabilitation protocol. Case presentation: A 47-year-old male hospitalized for postoperative rehabilitation following ARCR participated in a 5-week physical therapy intervention. The postoperative day was 6 months, but due to shooting pain and shoulder dysfunction, and the movement of the shoulder was compensatory motion, not normal motion. Physical agents, manual therapy, and supervised exercise for 110 minutes per session were performed 3 times a week, and pain intensity, range of motion, function, and strength were evaluated. Results: As a result of the study, the patient showed positive improvement in pain intensity, range of motion, function, and strength. In addition, normal scapulohumeral rhythm movement was observed. Conclusions: According to the results of this case, appropriate physical therapy according to the compensatory motion shown in the structural changes after ARCR can positively improve the pain intensity, range of motion, function, and strength of ARCR patients.
Purpose: This study focused on the health conditions and satisfaction in day-to-day life of elders using welfare facilities where there is no charge, and thus provides basic data for development of quality services required for health enhancement and a variety of demands from these elders. Method: The participants in the study were 140 elders selected at random from facilities for elders in Taegu. The tools for the study were the Korean Health Status Measure for the Elderly (Shin, H. C., 2002), and Yoon's "Criteria of Older Adults Life Satisfaction"(1982). Results: Differences in life satisfaction were found according to general characteristics of the elders, and that a lack of caretaker professionalism and relationships with other elders, but not the program were scored lower. In the correlation between health status and life satisfaction, it was found that emotional, social function and physical pain showed correlations with life satisfaction. PURPOSE: Stoke is one of most common disabling conditions and it is still lacking of measuring patient's functioning level. The aim of the study was to develop Korean language version of stroke impact scale 3.0. METHODS: Korean version of stroke impact scale 3.0 was developed in idiomatic modern Korean with a standard protocol of multiple forward and backward translations and an expert reviews to achieve equivalence with the original English version. Interviews with clinicians who were currently managing patients with stroke were also conducted for language evaluation. A reliability test was performed to make final adaptation using a pre-final version. To assess the reliability of the translated questionnaire, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated for each domain of the scale. RESULTS: Thirty subjects (16 male, 14 female) aged from 20 to 75 years old participated to review the translated questionnaire. Reliability of each domain of the questionnaire was found to be good in strength (ICC=0.74), ADL (ICC=0.81), mobility (ICC=0.90), hand function (ICC=0.80) and social participation (ICC=0.79), communication (ICC=0.77) with total (ICC=0.76). However, domains of memory and thinking (ICC=0.66), and emotion (ICC=0.27) and showed poor reliability. CONCLUSION: This study indicates that the Korean version of SIS 3.0 was successfully developed. Future study needed for obtaining the validity of the Korean version of SIS 3.0.
