Social Support and COVID-19 Stress Among Immigrants in South Korea

  • Individuals have been under more stress since the COVID-19 pandemic began than they were before the pandemic. While social support is a known stress buffer among the general population, its impact on stress among vulnerable populations, such as immigrants and those living in rural areas, has received little attention in the context of South Korea. Accordingly, we examined the relationship between different types of social support and COVID-19 stress among young adult immigrants based on where they live (rural vs. urban). We conducted a survey of 300 young adult immigrants aged 25-34 years and analyzed the results. The dependent variable was COVID-19 stress, and the independent variables were four types of social support: emotional, appraisal, instrumental, and informational. We discovered that young adult immigrants in rural areas perceived higher-level social supportin all aspects compared with those in urban areas. Furthermore, social support was not related to COVID-19 stress in urban areas, while appraisal support was positively and informational support was negatively related to COVID-19 stress in rural areas. Our findings suggest that a contextualized understanding of social support is critical to understanding COVID-related stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

문화적응스트레스 및 정서조절이 다문화가정 아동의 우울/불안에 미치는 영향 : 사회적 지지 매개효과를 중심으로 (Effects of Acculturative Stress and Emotional Control on Depression/Anxiety in Children from Multicultural Families: Mediating Effects of Social Support)

  • This study examines the mediating effects of social support on 1) the relationships between acculturative stress and depression/anxiety and 2) the relationships between emotional control and depression/anxiety in children from multicultural families. Pearson's correlations between variables were analyzed, and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to identify direct and indirect effects of acculturative stress, emotional control, and social support on children's depression/anxiety. The sample included a total of 199 primary school students in grades 3 to 6 who lived in the Gwangju or Chonnam regions of Korea. First, there were positive correlations between acculturative stress and depression/anxiety and negative correlations between emotional control and social support. Second, social support from both peers and teachers partially mediated the relationships between acculturative stress and depression/anxiety. Third, social support from peers fully mediated the relationships between emotional control and depression/anxiety, and that from teachers partially mediated these relationships. The results suggest that social support from peers and teachers may reduce depression/anxiety in multicultural children as a mediating variable.

자활사업 참여자의 사회적 자본이 삶의 질에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 - 직무만족의 매개효과를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Effects of Self-support Program Participants' Social Capital on Their Quality of Life - Focusing on the mediating effect of job satisfaction -)

  • 본 연구는 자활사업 참여자들의 사회적 자본과 삶의 질의 관계를 살펴보고, 사회적 자본과 삶의 질의 관계에서 직무만족이 미치는 매개효과를 규명하고자 하는데 목적이 있다. 조사연구를 실시하기 위해 전국에 위치하고 있는 지역자활센터를 대상으로 센터의 유형과 지역유형을 구분한 후 비례할당 표집을 실시하였고, 1,185부를 최종 분석에서 사용하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 자활사업 참여자의 사회적 자본과 삶의 질의 관계를 살펴보면, 네트워크와 규범이 삶의 질에 중요한 영향을 미치고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 인간관계로부터 형성되는 비물질적인 사회적 자본이 삶의 질에 직접적 영향을 미친다는 선행연구 결과를 지지하는 것이다. 둘째, 자활사업 참여자의 사회적 자본과 직무만족의 관계를 살펴보면, 사회적 자본이 직무만족에 부적영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 참여자의 사회적 자본 수준이 높아질수록 자활사업에 대한 만족이 낮아진다는 것을 의미한다. 이는 자활사업 참여에 대한 부정적 인식으로 인하여 여타의 임금노동시장에서 긍정적으로 작용했던 사회적 자본이 그 효과를 발휘하지 못한다는 결과를 제시한다. 셋째, 자활사업 참여자의 사회적 자본과 삶의 질의 관계에서 직무만족의 매개효과는 정적 영향을 나타내고 있는데, 이는 직무만족과 삶의 질의 관계와 관련한 가설 중 전이모델(spillover model)을 지지하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 즉, 자신의 직무에 만족하는 사람은 일반적인 삶에서도 만족감을 느끼게 된다는 것이다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 자활사업 참여자들의 삶의 질을 향상시키기고, 사회적 자본의 순기능적인 측면을 보완하기 위한 실천적·정책적 함의를 제시하고 있다.

뇌성마비 환아 어머니의 사회적 지지와 부담감 (Burden and Social Support of Mothers with Cerebral Palsy Children)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the level of burden and social support of mothers with Cerebral Palsy (CP) children, and to determine whether providing social support is an effective strategy to relieve the burden of those mothers. Method: From October to November 2007, the data were collected from 63 mothers with CP children who were admitted and treated for CP at Y rehabilitation center in Seoul. The data were analyzed with t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, and Stepwise Multiple Regression using SPSS 12.0. Results: Burden of mothers was related to the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) of the CP children. Social support was negatively correlated and GMFCS was positively correlated with burden of mothers. Social support and GMFCS was statistically significantly related with burden of mothers with CP children by multiple regression analysis. Conclusion: There was a significantly negative correlation between social support and burden. It demonstrated that social support, an important factor relating to burden imposed on mothers of CP children, can be considered as an intervening variable which can contribute to decrease of burden. In addition, applying developmental screening measures are needed to decrease disability severity.

보험심사간호사가 지각한 사회적 지지가 소진에 미치는 직접효과 및 완충효과 (The Main & Buffering Effects of Perceived Social Support on Burnout of Insurance Review Nurses)

  • Purpose: The purposes were to survey the level of work stress, social support, burnout of insurance review nurses and to measure the main & buffering effect of perceived social support on burnout. Method: The samples were 285 insurance review nurses who were registered in Review Nurses Association of Korea at the period of 25 July and 12 August in 2005. Data were analyzed by using of t-test, Pearson's correlation, stepwise multiple regression, two-way ANOVA. Results: There were significant differences of burnout according to the work experience, position, and work satisfaction of insurance review nurses. Among the variables explaining the level of burnout of review nurses, the most significant variable was work stress, followed by current work satisfaction, social support, position and total variance explained was 40.8%. For the analysis of the buffering effects of perceived social support on work stress and burnout, the interaction between work stress and social support was not significant. Conclusions: It is necessary to construct the social support system and to reduce the work stress in order to reduce the level of the burnout of insurance review nurses.

청소년의 게임중독성이 학교적응에 미치는 영향: 사회적 지지의 매개효과를 중심으로 (Impact of Adolescent Game Addiction on School Adaption: Focused on the Mediating Effects of Social-support)

  • 본 연구는 청소년의 게임중독성과 학교적응의 관계에서 사회적 지지의 매개효과를 탐색하는 것이 목적이다. 이를 위해 서부경남지역 중학생을 활용하였으며, 분석대상은 353명 이었다. 매개변인과 준거변인에 유의미한 상관이 있는 가외변인을 공변인으로 설정하고 회귀분석과 SPSS Macro 및 부트스트래핑(bootstrapping) 방법을 적용하여 청소년 게임중독성과 학교적응에 있어 사회적 지지의 매개효과를 검증하였다. 분석결과 게임중독성이 높은 청소년일수록 학교적응이 낮게 나타났지만, 사회적 지지(매개변인)는 청소년 게임중독성(예측변인)과 학교적응(준거변인)에 미치는 영향을 완전매개하고 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 이를 바탕으로 청소년의 게임중독성을 감소시키고 매개변인인 사회적 지지를 증가시켜 학교적응을 높이기 위한 실천적 함의와 제한점을 제시하였다.

일 대도시지역 택시 기사의 직무스트레스, 사회적 지지 및 직무만족도의 관계 : 사회적 지지의 매개효과 (A Study on The Relationships Between Job Stress, Social Support and Job Satisfaction of Taxi Drivers)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate the relationships between job stress or social support and job satisfaction, and the function of social support, theoretically considered to mediate the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction. Methods: After obtaining informed consent from participants, data were collected from 122 taxi drivers. Gamma was used for testing of the first and second hypotheses. Partial Gamma was used to test the third hypothesis. Patterns of elaboration described by Babbie (1986) were selected for interpretation of the relationship among the three variable analyses. Results: First, a negative relationship was observed between job stress and job satisfaction (Gamma=-.543, p=.001) and a positive relationship was observed between social support and job satisfaction (Gamma=.741, p<.001). Second, when controlling for social support, the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction showed a decrease under conditions of both low and high social support. As for the mediating effect of social support, job stress was found to affect social support and social support was found to affect job satisfaction. Conclusion: The results showed that social support had a mediating effect between job stress and job satisfaction. Therefore, development and implementation of appropriate social support interventions is needed in order to reduce job stress and promote job satisfaction.

손자녀 양육 조부모의 지각된 건강상태, 양육 스트레스 및 사회적 지지가 삶의 질에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Perceived Health, Parental Stress, and Social Support on Quality of Life in Grandparent Caregivers)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among perceived health, parental stress, social support, and quality of life of grandparent caregivers and to identify the factors influencing quality of their life. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was used. The data were collected by questionnaires from a convenience sample of 130 participants taking care of their grandchildren from ten children's daycare centers in Seoul, Korea from August to September, 2013. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation efficients, and multiple regressions. Results: Perceived health, parental stress and social support were correlated significantly with quality of life. As a result of the multiple regression analysis, education level, age of grandchildren, perceived health, parental stress and social support accounted for 48% of the variance in quality of life. Perceived health, parental stress, and social support were identified as factors influencing quality of life and the variable that most affected quality of life was perceived health. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that health of people taking care of their grandchildren must be promoted while relieving their parental stress with appropriate social support in order to improve quality of life.

Empowering Poor-Households Women on Productive Economy Businesses in Indonesia

  • Self-efficacy has been extensively evaluated, but no studies have investigated the effect of self-efficacy on the self-reliance of women in poor-households economic productivity. This study analyzes self-efficacy as a personal factor, learning processes, and social support as an environmental factor towards the achievement of self-reliance in women from poor-households in productive economy businesses. Despite the dominant logic of this scheme, there is a need for field-based data regarding whether the variable really supports the sustainable empowerment of poor-households women. This study used the quantitative method through the survey technique. The samples of this study included 250 people collected from five regencies in Indonesia by using a multiple-stage random sampling. The data were analyzed with structural equation modeling. The results show that social support has a significant positive impact on the learning process; social support has a direct negative impact on self-efficacy. The learning process has a direct positive influence on self-efficacy, while social support has a non-significant impact on self-reliance. The learning process has a direct influence on self-reliance. Social support and the learning process both have significant positive impact on self-efficacy. Social support, learning process, and self-efficacy simultaneously have a positive impact on self-reliance in productive economic activities.

유아교육기관 교사의 지각된 자아효능감과 사회적 지지가 조직 몰입에 미치는 영향 (The Influence of the Self-Efficacy and the Social Support on the Organizational Commitment of Kindergarten and Child Care Teachers)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship with self-efficacy and social support and organizational commitment of kindergarten and child care teachers. The subjects were 257 kindergarten and child care teachers. The data were analyzed by Path Analysis, Multiple Regression(using SPSS 15.0 and Amos 6.0). Major findings were as follows: (1) The self-efficacy was significantly associated with organizational commitment of kindergarten and child care teachers. And social support was significantly associated with organizational commitment of kindergarten and child care teachers. (2) The self-efficacy was significantly associated with social support of kindergarten and child care teachers (3) The self-efficacy was not significantly associated with organizational commitment of kindergarten and child care teachers, controlled by social support. That result showed the social support was more important variable affecting organizational commitment of kindergarten and child care teachers than the self-efficacy.
