  • ${\cdot}$ Recent social policy and labour markets debates in Europe, responding to the difficulties faced by the traditional neo-Keynesian welfare state settlement, stress the value of positive investment alongside de-regulation and greater flexibility as a way of achieving both economic and social goals. ${\cdot}$ Patterns of policy reform are complex and reflect differing national circumstances. A general move towards deregulation, constraints on entitlement to passive benefits, programmes to enhance employment, particularly among high-risk groups such as single parents and young people, targeted subsidies for low earners and casemanagement may be identified. ${\cdot}$ In relation to investment in education, research and development and combined training and benefit programmes to enhance mobility between jobs the picture is less clear. Education standards continue to rise, but research and development spending stagnates and few countries have developed substantial ‘flexi-curity’ programmes to support job mobility. ${\cdot}$ The labour market tradition in much of Europe has been one of conflict between labour and employers. As labour grows weaker, new approaches develop. These tend to stress productivity agreements and greater flexibility in work practices within firms and reforms to passive social security systems more broadly, but movement to support the more challenging investment and flexi-curity policies is slow. ${\cdot}$ In general, social and labour market policies in Europe stress deregulation and negative activation more strongly than social investment and ‘flexi-curity’. The countries with high growth and employment achieve that goal by different routes: Sweden has a closely integrated social democratic corporatism with high spending on benefits and training programmes and the UK a more liberal market-oriented system, with lower spending, highly targeted benefits and less mobility support. ${\cdot}$ Europe has something to learn from Korea in achieving high investment in human capital and R and D, while Korea may have something to learn from Europe in social investment, particularly flexi-curity and equal opportunity policies.

  • This study explored the life of social workers by applying the photo Voice research method. Participants selected three themes through group discussions and shared the daily life of a social worker through photos they prepared in relation to each topic. Through this process, they shared their own experiences on 'difficulties related to work activities,' 'factors that create positive aspects that motivate social workers,' and 'factors that create negative aspects that demotivate social workers.' Using these three themes and 11 sub-themes, the participants shared their own experiences as social workers in the workplace. In order to improve the quality of life of social workers, we proposed amendments to related laws such as the Labor Standards Act, and also proposed legislative and institutional measures such as the enactment of policies related to personal safety threats.

  • It is recognized that one of the major issues in jail management is responding to the needs of a growing number of inmates with mental health problems. The purpose of this study was to assess the nature and severity of mental health problems among inmate population. The mental health status of 1,500 (1,337 responded) inmates of the 30 prisons located in nationwide area was examined using Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). And the scores on MMPI were examined in relation to some offender characteristics such as type of offence, treatment classification, frequence of discipline. The result indicates that the percentage of inmate population with scores over 70 on every sub-categories of the scale is higher than that of general populations reflecting high rate of deviation from average normal mental health. It seems likely that many of inmates are in need of specific mental health treatment services. The nature and severity of mental health problems varies depending on offender characteristics above mentioned. It is also notable that the inmates are heterogeneous in terms of mental health status, and that severe offences such as robbery, assault, and rape or sexual assault are highly related to the scores on 'antisocial' sub category. The study also reveals that there is a relation, if not causal, between mental health problem and frequency of discipline while in prison. Under basis of these findings, this study concludes that a number of inmates in our prison have mental health problems requiring mental health treatment services and suggests five key steps to effectively respond to the prevalence of mental health problems in prison at both the level of the clinical interventions and at the level of system structure and organization. Specially, the importance of collaborative service strategies of the correctional system with mental health systems are underlined.

  • This study suggests a conceptualization model of 'cultural inclusiveness' organically connected to social inclusiveness, by expanding the implications of urban inclusiveness to the domain and relationship. Based on the process of necessity of relation, connection of space, and execution of act, the cultural inclusiveness could be connected to the formation of organic/learning relation, the creation of openness focusing on public space, and the practice of diverse subjects. Concretely, the concept of cultural inclusiveness is applied to the case of 'Hongdae-ap'. The recent Hongdae-ap is showing the value of coexistence such as the establishment of environment that could protect the diversity of individual subjects and groups(artists, residents, government officials, students, cultural activists, citizens, tourists, and etc.), the formation of public space such as 'Hongdae-up playground', 'pedestrian-friendly street', and 'Gyeongui-Line book street', social network service & horizontal network, and access.

  • This paper examines the effect of corporate social responsosibility(CSR) on the firm value. Based on the argument that CSR would play the role of mitigating conflicts between firms and society, I hypothesized that CSR would enhance the firm value. This study used regression analysis with a data set of 733 from 2009 to 2012 using KEJI(Korean Economic Justice Institute) Index. An Index published by KEJI was used as the measure of CSR performance. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, there is a significant positive relation between CSR and firm value. Second, in the seven-rating items consist of the KEJI Index, most items have the positive relationship with the firm value. These results suggest that firm with higher CSR activities exhibit better financial performance as measured by Tobin's Q.
