Corporate Social Responsibility and Information Asymmetry in the Korean Market: Implications of Chaebol Affiliates

  • This paper examines how corporate social responsibility is related to the degree of asymmetric information in the Korean financial market. Recent theory argues that there is a negative relationship between a firm's corporate social responsibility and its information asymmetry. To test this hypothesis, we use the environment, social and governance (ESG) score, published by the Korean Corporate Governance Service, to proxy a firm's management practices toward socially responsible activities. In the entire sample of the Korean firms, we find contrasting results; the ESG score shows negative relationships with the price impact measure but statistically insignificant relationships with the dispersion of analyst forecasts. However, the ESG score shows negative relationships with both measures when we exclude chaebol affiliates from the sample. These findings are robust when we examine environmental, social and corporate governance scores separately. This set of results argues for the extant theory, expecting a negative relationship between a firm's engagement in corporate social responsibility and asymmetric information. It further argues for the importance of firm characteristics in determining the influence of socially responsible activities.

Social Adjustment of Adolescent Cancer Survivors: A Concept Analysis

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the attributes of social adjustment among adolescent cancer survivors using concept analysis and to propose a definition of the concept. Methods: In accordance with the hybrid model of concept analysis, this study employed a three-phase circular process comprising theoretical, fieldwork, and final analysis phases. A thorough literature review was conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, and Korean databases, followed by qualitative fieldwork with seven participants. The results derived from the theoretical and fieldwork phases were integrated into the final analysis phase. Results: Four attributes of social adjustment were found in adolescent cancer survivors: having harmonious relationships with friends, having harmonious relationships with boy/girlfriends, fulfilling their present roles, and planning for and expecting future roles. The following definition of social adjustment of adolescent cancer survivors is proposed: "the conquering of difficulties arising from the continuum of childhood cancer and the achievement of the developmental tasks of typical adolescents." Conclusion: Social adjustment of childhood cancer survivors is crucial for integrating them into society. The findings of this study provide a basis for developing an instrument to measure the social adjustment of adolescent cancer survivors and for developing of interventions that target this group.

The Effects of Self-leadership and Nursing Professionalism on Social Responsibility in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 셀프리더십과 간호전문직관이 사회적 책임에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of self-leadership and nursing professionalism on social responsibility in nursing students and verify the mediating effects of nursing professionalism on the relationships between self-leadership and social responsibility. The subjects of this study consisted of 250 nursing students. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires. The results were as follows: Self-leadership and nursing professionalism had a positive effect on social responsibility. Nursing professionalism had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between self-leadership and social responsibility. Conclusively, this results of study is meaningful to provide evidence to improve the self-leadership and maximize nursing professionalism to increase social responsibility in nursing students.

A Conceptualization of Social Media Fatigue and Its Dimensions

  • Purpose - This study aims to conceptualize the construct of social media (SM) fatigue. Design/methodology/approach - A qualitative approach is employed to understand how SM users currently perceive (or interpret) the goals of SM usage and to conceptualize SM fatigue and its dimensions. We collected data through in-depth interviews of three SM users and group discussions among eighty SM users. Findings - we draw a definition of SM fatigue from a resource view that excessive SM use might lead to SM fatigue by depleting the internal resources of SM users. Further, through the analysis of the qualitative data from interviews and group discussions, we find the multi-dimensional nature of SM fatigue and identify five dimensions of SM fatigue-fatigue from the social obligation to interact with people, the importance of self-appearance, the quality of information, the quantity of information, and undesirable events-and common sources of fatigue in each dimension. Research implications or Originality - The conceptualization of SM fatigue elaborated in this study could enable scientific exploration of the role of SM fatigue in users' attitudes or behavior formation and change. On a practical front, this study would be valuable to companies by facilitating systematic investigations of their customers' fatigue through the lens of the SM fatigue dimensions.

A STUDY OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF-IMAGE AND SOCIAL SENSITIVITY IN ADOLESCENTS : THE STRUCTURAL RELATION AMONG SELF-IMAGE, DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, AND SOCIAL SENSITIVITY (청소년의 자아상과 사회적 민감성간의 관계에 대한 연구: 자아상-우울-불안-사회적 민감성간의 구조적 관계분석)

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate empirically the relationship among self-image, depression, anxiety, and social sensitivity in adolescents. 1602 normal adolescents(697 males and 905 females) responded to self report scales-Offer Self-Image Questionnaire-Revised, 3 subscales of Symptom Checklist-90-Revised. The data were analyzed with ANOVA and LISREL to examine the effect of self-image on depression, anxiety, and social sensitivity, and to test the relationship among the above 4 variables. Adolescents with low self-image showed significantly higher scores in the scales of depression, anxiety, and social sensitivity than did adolescents with high self-image. The result of LISREL showed that the low self-image leads to the emotional state of depression and anxiety, and those of depression and anxiety lead to the increase of social sensitivity, suggesting that self-image has a direct effect on depression and anxiety, and has a direct effect on social sensitivity in adolescent. These results were discussed in terms of implications for the prevention and treatment of adolescent social phobia.

A Study on the actual condition and perception of the social service activity of nurses for social service system construction (간호사의 사회봉사활동 체계 구축을 위한 실태 및 인식 조사)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual condition and recognition about social service activity(SSA) of nurses. Methods : This is a descriptive study. The data were collected by a structured questionare from July 15 to 31, 2002. The questionares were sent to 711 nurses of 38 hospitals, and 664 cases were returned. The answer rate is 93.4%. The data were analyzed by SPSS 11.0. Results : 1. 71.0% nurses had a SSA experience during university, but only 14.2% nurses are participated in SSA now. 2. In the case of having an experience, 56.0% nurses participated in SSA under 1 year, 69.5% nurses didn't support the service costs. 3. In the case of not having experience, the main reason why they didn't participate in is to lack of opportunity. 4. 91.1% nurses recognize the necessity of SSA and 99.5% nurses agree with the necessity of operation system. 82.9% nurses approve the cooperation system among the regions. 87.2% nurses have an intension to participate in SSA when the cooperation system is set up. Conclusion : It need to set up the social service operating system among the regions, and encourage nurse to participate in the SSA.

  • Using existing tunnel for section enlargement and remodeling is being considered as an optimal alternative in order to solve traffic jam in tunnel. The existing method has been performed while blocking the traffic flow. Recently, New enlargement method was developed which can maintain traffic flow during the construction by using protector. It can minimize social loss due to keeping traffic flow. On the other hand, installing and operating protector can cause economic disadvantages. So, social cost estimation considering traffic flow should be considered for relevant economic evaluation of tunnel section enlargement methods. This paper presents the social cost estimation method of tunnel section enlargement methods considering traffic flow. In addition, to compare economic efficiency existing method with new method, suggested method was applied to Maebong Tunnel.

  • The user experience of the game contents refers to the overall experience which players feel in the game play. As this experience increases, the immersion and satisfaction level extend. Therefore, the user experience is an important factor in determining success of the game. This study has the purpose for presenting importance of user experience about SNG (Social Network Game), which is the focal point recently. For this purpose, this study analyzes features of successful SNG game by comparing essential elements of user experience, such as user interface, usability, and interaction design elements. And then, this study discusses the user experience elements for enhancing the possibility of success of SNG game. This study can provide the information which is beneficial to the game immersion of SNG game players and user experience.

Identifying Influential Users of College Sports Teams' Social Media Accounts (대학스포츠팀 SNS의 영향력 있는 사용자의 분석)

  • This study tried to identify the influential users of college sports teams' Twitter accounts and categorize them into three groups including an official account, media account, and layperson account. A total of 14 Twitter accounts at NCAA Division 1 universities were selected through convenience sampling method. In men's sports, the greatest number of influential users was layperson account followed by media account and official account. In women's sports, the greatest number of influential users was layperson account followed by official account and media account. The results provided the insight of college sports online social network and will expand the growing literature on social media in sport and offer practical data for marketers to use social media more effectively.

  • In this study, 'poverty', which we think in our daily life, started from something. In particular, this study typified the perception of poverty by using the 'Q methodology', a subjective research method, to examine individual subjective opinions. The results of the analysis are as follows. is a "Retraction type", and poverty is a problem of 'Retention', 'Individual Effort Problem', 'Social Structure Problem', 'Low Status' and 'Laziness'. is a "Individual Problem type", and emphasizes 'Individual Effort Problem', 'Laziness', 'Incompetence', 'Starvation' and so on. is a "Basic Problem type", and emphasizes the basic element of life such as 'The Food and Shelter problem', 'Starvation', 'Laziness', and 'No Money'. is a "Resource Distribution Problem Type" that emphasizes the problem of resource allocation according to social structural problems. This study typifies the perception of poverty using subjectivity research method on 21st century and expects converging extension study to empirical studies for generalization.
