  • B-spline function is generally used for an image interpolation because of its smoothness and continuity, but it accompanies a large amount of blurring effect. In this paper, a space-variant B-spline interpolation function is proposed through deblurring process followed by de-aliasing process. The proposed function has parametric expression and performs smoothing and edge-enhancement adaptively in the interpolation process according to local property of the image. Application of this function to image enlargement, rotation, and curve representation producted good results. Even in the presence of noise, noise smoothing effect as well as edge-enhancement were observed in the image interpolation process.

  • An extension method of data points of Munsell color space is described. A cubic spline method is used for this extension and the charts made by the use of these points are recommended for general use in the textile industry in determining the Munsell notation (H, V, C) of a given color sample when the CIE sepcification (Y, x, y) is known. These data points are used for the analysis of the H-C plane of Munsell color space.

  • Measured bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) data have been used to represent complex interaction between lights and surface materials for photorealistic rendering. However, their massive size makes it hard to adopt them in practical rendering applications. In this paper, we propose an adaptive method for B-spline volume representation of measured BRDF data. It basically performs approximate B-spline volume lofting, which decomposes the problem into three sub-problems of multiple B-spline curve fitting along u-, v-, and w-parametric directions. Especially, it makes the efficient use of knots in the multiple B-spline curve fitting and thereby accomplishes adaptive knot placement along each parametric direction of a resulting B-spline volume. The proposed method is quite useful to realize efficient data reduction while smoothing out the noises and keeping the overall features of BRDF data well. By applying the B-spline volume models of real materials for rendering, we show that the B-spline volume models are effective in preserving the features of material appearance and are suitable for representing BRDF data.

  • We present formula for detecting influential observations on the smoothing parameter in smoothing spline. Further, we express them as functions of basic building blocks such as residuals and leverage, and compare it with the local influence approach by Thomas (1991). An example based on a real data set is given.

  • In order to overcome computational ill-posedness which arises when we solve the least square problems, nonlinear smoothing splines are used. The existence and the convergence on nonlinear smoothing spline are shown with numerical experiments.

  • Semiparametric and nonparametric small area estimations have been studied to overcome a large variance due to a small sample size allocated in a small area. In this study, we investigate semiparametric and nonparametric mixed effect small area estimators using penalized spline and kernel smoothing methods respectively and compare their performances using labor statistics.

  • A FEM-based efficient method is developed for the shape optimization of 2-D structures. The combined SLP and Simplex method are coupled with finite element analysis. Selected set of master nodes on the design boundaries are employed as design variables and assigned to move towards their normal directions. The other nodes along the design boundaries are grouped into the master node. By interpolating the repositioned master nodes, the B-spline curves are formed so that the rest mid-nodes efficiently settle down on the B-spline curves. Mesh smoothing scheme is also applied for the nodes on the design boundary to maintain most finite elements in good quality. Finally, a numerical implementation of optimum design of an automobile torque converter piston subjected to pressure and centrifugal loads is presented. The results shows additional weight up to 13% may be saved after the shape optimization.

  • A study on the gray images morphing using morphology and spline interpolation is realized. The adapted method is that join the 2 broken line together with the dilation of morphology to the morphing image, remove the holes to be a soft edge at the image boundaries and extract the featuring points with the cubic spline interpolation. As a result of experiment the method elicits more smoothing image morphing in detail and speed up the interframe processing.

  • An efficient method is developed for the shape optimization of 2-D structures. The sequential linear programming is used for minimization problems. Selected set of master nodes are employed as design variables and assigned to move towards the normal direction. After adapting the nodes on the design boundary, the B-spline curves and mesh smoothing schemes are used to maintain the finite element in good quality. Finally, a numerical implementation of optimum design of an automobile torque converter piston subjected to pressure and centrifugal loads is presented.
