Implementation of Smoke-free Legislation in Malaysia: Are Adolescents Protected from Respiratory Health Effects?

  • Background: This study aimed to examine the relationship between respiratory health of Malaysian adolescents with secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and smoke-free legislation (SFL) implementation. Materials and Methods: A total of 898 students from 21 schools across comprehensive- and partial-SFL states were recruited. SHS exposures and respiratory symptoms were assessed via questionnaire. Prenatal and postnatal SHS exposure information was obtained from parental-completed questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of respiratory symptoms was: 11.9% ever wheeze, 5.6% current wheeze, 22.3% exercise-induced wheeze, 12.4% nocturnal cough, and 13.1% self-reported asthma. SHS exposure was most frequently reported in restaurants. Hierarchical logistic regression indicates living in a comprehensive-SFL state was not associated with a lower risk of reporting asthma symptoms. SHS exposure in public transport was linked to increased risk for wheeze (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) 16.6; 95%confidence interval (CI), 2.69-101.7) and current wheezing (AOR 24.6; 95%CI, 3.53-171.8). Conclusions: Adolescents continue to be exposed to SHS in a range of public venues in both comprehensive- and partial-SFL states. Respiratory symptoms are common among those reporting SHS exposure on public transportation. Non-compliance with SFL appears to be frequent in many venues across Malaysia and enforcement should be given priority in order to reduce exposure.

환경담배연기로 인한 실내공기 중 PM2.5 및 미량성분 오염 특성 (Indoor Air Quality Pollution of PM2.5 and Associated Trace Elements Affected by Environmental Tobacco Smoke)

  • 본 연구는 흡연기작을 모사한 시료채취장비를 이용하여 환경담배연기를 주류연기와 비주류연기로 구분하여 채취하고, 환경담배연기 중의 미량원소성분을 중성자방사화분석을 이용하여 분석하였다. 또한, 실내공기 중 PM2.5를 집중적으로 채취하고 인체 영향이 큰 As, Cr, Mn, Se, V, Zn를 비롯한 약 20종의 미량원소를 분석하여 그 화학적 특성을 파악하며 환경담배연기가 실내공기질에 미치는 영향을 평가하고자 하였다. 담배개피 당 미량원소 발생량은 Cl, K, Na 등을 제외한 대부분의 원소에서 비주류연기에서 더 높게 나타났고, K, Cl, Na, Al의 발생량은 개피 당 $1{\mu}g$ 이상으로 가장 많았고, Br, Fe, Zn도 높은 배출량을 보여 외부오염원과 독립적으로 실내 환경에서의 Br, Cl, Fe, K, Zn의 농도 증가에 환경담배연기가 기여하는 것으로 판단된다. PM2.5의 농도는 흡연 사무실은 $58.7{\pm}18.1{\mu}g/m^3$인 반면, 비흡연 사무실은 $38.6{\pm}12.7{\mu}g/m^3$를 보여 ETS에 의해 흡연 사무실에서 1.5배 정도 높게 나타났고, 미량원소의 농도비는 Cu (1.0)를 제외한 모든 원소에서 농도비의 평균값이 1.1~6.0으로 흡연 사무실의 원소 농도가 비흡연 사무실의 원소 농도보다 높게 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 환경담배연기가 실내 공기 중 PM2.5와 미량원소의 농도 증가의 한 원인인 것을 보여주고 있다.

연기선과 미세 수적을 이용한 두 가지 가시화 기법과 와류에의 적용 (Two Visualization Techniques Using Smoke-wire and Micro Water-droplets and Their Applications to Vortex Flows)

  • 두 가지의 비표면 가시화 기법과 이들 기법의 와류 적용 예를 기술한다. 두 가지 가시화 기법 중 하나는 전통적인 연기선 기법이고, 또 다른 하나는 가정용 초음파 가습기에서 발생하는 미세 수적을 사용하는 기법이다. 연기선 기법은 공기 흐름 속도에 제한이 있으며(0.07 mm 지름의 연기선의 경우 약 5 m/sec), 오염의 문제점이 있지만 매우 정교하고 선명한 연기 유맥선 시트를 발생시킬 수 있다. 이 기법은 3차원 날개의 날개 끝 와류의 가시화에 적용되었다. 초음파 가습기 미세 수적 기법은 연기선 기법에 비하여 공기 흐름 속도를 보다 크게 할 수 있으며(10 m/sec 이상), 독성과 오염의 문제를 해결할 수 있다. 초음파 가습기 미세 수적 기법은 정점 스트레이크를 가지는 이중 삼각날개에서 발생하는 복잡한 와류 시스템의 가시화에 성공적으로 적용되었다.

비 포괄적인 금연정책을 시행한 호프집의 면적에 따른 실내 PM2.5 농도 (Indoor PM2.5 Concentrations in Different Sizes of Pubs with Non-comprehensive Smoke-free Regulation)

  • Objectives: The Korean government implemented a smoke-free regulation for pubs with a net indoor area of ${\geq}100m^2$ on January 1, 2014. The purpose of this study was to determine the indoor levels of concentrations of particulate matter smaller than $2.5{\mu}m$ ($PM_{2.5}$) in implemented and non-implemented pubs in Seoul and Changwon. Methods: $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations in fifty-two $100-150m^2$ (implemented) and fifty-seven < $100m^2$ (non-implemented) pubs were measured. A real-time aerosol monitor was used to measure $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations. Field technicians recorded characteristics of the pubs including net indoor area, indoor volume and presence of smoking rooms and counted the number of burning cigarettes, patrons and vents. Results: Differences between indoor and outdoor $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations in $100-150m^2$ and < $100m^2$ pubs were not significantly different in each city. Smoking was observed in 33% of $100-150m^2$ pubs and 51% of < $100m^2$ pubs. Average differences between indoor and outdoor $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations in the $100-150m^2$ and < $100m^2$ pubs were $79.2{\mu}g/m^3$ and $155.6{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. When smokers were not observed, differences between indoor and outdoor $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations ware $12.4{\mu}g/m^3$ in $100-150m^2$ pubs and $24.5{\mu}g/m^3$ in < $100m^2$ pubs. Conclusion: Although the regulation was implemented only in ${\geq}100m^2$ pubs, a higher difference between indoor and outdoor $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations was observed in implemented and non-implemented pubs with smokers. Strict implementation of the regulation in all pubs is needed for better indoor air quality.

DME와 디젤 단기통 엔진의 연소 및 배출가스 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Combustion and Exhaust Gas Characteristics of Single Cylinder Engine for DME and Diesel)

  • In order to confront the increasing air pollution and the tightening emission restrictions, this research developed a diesel engine using DME, the advanced smoke-free alternative fuel. By numerical analysis, flow field, spray, and combustion phenomenon of the DME engine was presented. Using an experimental method, the configuration of the fuel supply system and operation/power performance was tested with the current plunger pump. Most emission performance, especially smoke performance was significantly improved. The possibility of conversion from the current diesel engine into the DME engine was affirmed in this research. However, it was found that the increase of engine RPM and fuel amount need to be properly adjusted through matching the characteristics of fuel and injector for further improvement.

  • To ensure the safety and functionality of a railroad bridge, maintaining the integrity of the bridge via continuous structural health monitoring is important. However, most structural integrity monitoring methods proposed to date are based on modal responses which require the extracting process and have limited availability. In this paper, the applicability of the existing damage identification method based on free-vibration reponses to time-domain deflection shapes due to moving train load is investigated. Since the proposed method directly utilizes the time-domain responses of the structure due to the moving vehicles, the extracting process for modal responses can be avoided, and the applicability of structural health evaluation can be enhanced. The feasibility of the presented method is verified via a numerical example of a simple plate girder bridge.

성인남성 근로자들의 호기중 일산화질소 (Exhaled Nitric Oxide(NO) Among Adult Male Workers)

  • Nitric Oxide(NO) is produced in many organs of the body, including the lung and airways, and it is detectable in the exhaled air. The measurement of exhaled NO(eNO) provides a simple non-invasive means for measuring airway inflammation, such as asthma. We measured eNO among adult male workers to examine the distribution of eNO in healthy people and to find factors affecting eNO. We measured eNO in a sample of 921 adult workers who also performed lung function test and skin prick test. Exhaled NO was measured in a sitting posture without using a nose clip and NO free gas. NO was measured at three expiratory rates(l8; 42; 71 $m\ell$/sec) and the flow rate of 71 $m\ell$/sec was used in analysis. The average eNO concentration was 5.29 $\pm$ 2.98 ppb. The level increased with age but not significantly(P=0.0529). Exhaled NO showed positive relations to the height(P=0.0001), pollen 1 (P=0.0124), asthma history(P=0.0212), allergic rhinitis symptom(P=0.0302). Exhaled NO Concentration of smokers( 4.62 ppb) was significantly lower than that of nonsmokers(5.99 ppb; P<0.0001).

絹織物 Wash and Wear 加工硏究 (Studies on Silk Textile Wash and Wear Finishing)

  • 絹織物加工을 實需要者의 利用度를 增加시키기 爲해 多年間 여러 사람에 의하여 硏究되어 왔으나 天然織維이기 때문에 加工方式으로 性質을 變化시키기는 어려워서 滿足스러운 精度로 이루어지지 못하고 있는 實情에 있다. 絹織物加工은 勿論 그 缺點을 補强하는 同時에 商品的價値도 向上시키는데 目的이 있는데 때로는 有名商標가 品質以上으로 販賣를 左右하는 例도 많다. 特히 絹制品은 歡迎을 받지 못하고 있는 實情에 있다. 이러한 問題點을 解決하기 爲해 筆者는 多年間 硏究를 持績하여 왔든바 一般絹織物의 浸潤後 乾燥時間보다 半減된 時間에 乾燥되는 所謂 Wash and Wear絹加工方法의 開發을 하기에 이르렀다. 그리고 그 加工費用이 極히 經濟性인 탓으로 아무런 부담감 없이 加工處理할 수 있는 特徵을 갖이고 있었다. 1. 繭絲는 吐絲營繭曲線이 S字型으로 되어 있어 浸潤時에는 原狀復舊의 性質이 있어 屈曲狀態를 이룩하게 되어 本加工絹織物이 Wash and Wear이기는 하나 가벼운 다림질이 必要하였다. 2. 이러한 加工은 絹絲蛋白質의 變性을 加工過程에서 1% D.I.S.溶液에 3時間 處理하여 變性誘發시킴으로서 可能하였다. 3. 加工絹의 防皺度, 剛乾度를 洗濯回數를 反復하면서 調査하여 본 結果 未處理絹보다 惡化되지 않았다. 4. 未加工絹도 水洗, 乾燥를 反復하게되면 스스로 變性되는 事實을 알았다. 5. 處理絹과 未處理絹의 强力伸度面의 差異가 없었다.
