Casualties due to toxic smoke products have been reported as major fire damage. There are various tests in order to evaluate toxic smoke from a fire at home and abroad, and KS F 2271 as a test of the gas hazard of building finish materials has been conducted in Korea. The current test of the gas hazard exposes rodent, laboratory rat, to smoke gases to evaluate combustion gas toxicity by measuring acting time of that. this study performed a test of the gas hazard for combustible polymer material, Urethane and rubber flooring, and determined gases with the FT-IR. Quantitative results compared with standard value defined in BS6853 and toxicity index (R) was calculated. Using relative comparison with animal test and the toxicity index, We tried a variety of toxicity evaluation by correlation analysis of two tests.

In this paper, The experimental materials of painted fire resistant paint on substrate, FRP, PVC, AL and stainless steel that fire resistant paint developed newly were evaluated as the hazard elements : the fire resistibility of the materials, fire spread test of flame, the oxygen index, flammability, the smoke density. the toxicity index from it when it burned. As a result of the experiments, the AL and the stainless steel were passed of fire resistant class 1, the FRP, the AL, and the stainless steel were ignited of fire spread test of flame, all the experimental materials showed about $50\%$ of oxygen index, V-0 of flammability, and 43-338 of maximum smoke density at flaming mode used smoke density chamber. Also, they showed that the toxicity index of combustion products were 0.57-1.12.
This study is on the fire resistance evaluation method, expecially on the toxicity of smoke gases generated from the fire, of materials for railway car and structures. Until now, Although international standard related to the quantifying evaluation method of smoke gas is provided but the specific procedure is not contained. On this reason, Test results of toxicity show deviation with the different technique being applied. For now, In advanced railway country, various instrument, like ion chromatography and etc., is used but FT-IR is recommended due to its lots of advantages. while FT-IR has a lot of strong points but still has some problems like water vapor interferences. In this paper, To improve credibility and repeatability of FT-IR it contains some technical solutions in quantifying the 8 toxic components.
The absorption characteristics of hazardous materials onto human body and defense mechanism differ from each other region within the respiratory tracts, thus adverse health effects of inhaled smokes are associated with not only the concentration but also the location of the particles deposited. In this work, the deposition fraction per surface area and the deposition sites of the smoke particles in human respiratory tracts for each rest and light exercise conditions together with oral and nasal breathing were calculated by using segmental volume tracking method. The results would be used for deriving the amount of absorption of hazardous materials onto human body, thus contribute to the health risk assessments of inhaled fire smokes.
The aim of the research is to estimate the effect of smoke and combustion gases on humane body indirectly through measuring the toxicity of those. For this purpose, the toxic index of smoke and combustion gases was investigated by smoke hazard test and analysis of smoke which were conducted by KS F 2271 and NES 713 method respectively. It i s proved by KS F 2271 method that PASCON trough is suitable to the testing standard of interior material and construction of building. In addition, it is identified by NES 713 method that combustion gases occurring in PASCON product were only carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, and the smoke index of those was 0.944. This value means that the hazard effect of smoke gases on humane ! body can possibly happens when exposed to the smoke gases for more than 30 min. In aspect of the domestic situation that have not regulated the hazard estimation and the emissions of smoke when the flame retarding ability of the products have been requested, the toxic indexes of PASCON products are comparatively low.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of nitrogen compounds such as protein on the chemical composition and toxicity of cigarette mainstream smoke. BSA protein was treated into the tobacco leaf of original 2R4F cigarette at 1~4 % level. The studies were performed which included a bacterial mutagenicity assay and a mammalian cell cytotoxicity assay for total particulate matter(TPM), and glutathione(GSH) consumption assay for gas/vapor phase(GVP) and determination of smoke chemical constitute. Cigarettes treated with protein were observed dose-dependent increase in yield of volatiles, semi-volatiles and aromatic amines compared with control cigarette. However, carbonyl compounds such as acrolein was lower than that of control cigarette when calculated on an equal TPM basis. The cytotoxicity of TPM obtained from the protein-added cigarettes was not different from that of control cigarette. However, the mutagenicity of the TPM from protein-treated cigarettes(1~4 %) was up to 10-27 % higher than that of control. On the other hand, toxicity of GVP from protein-treated cigarette(4 %) was significantly decreased compared with control cigarette. An overall assessment of our data suggests that nitrogen compounds such as protein should be important for the chemical composition and biological activity of cigarette mainstream smoke.
Nitric oxide(nitrogen monoxide, NO) plays important physiological roles, but excessive generation can be toxic. NO is present in cigarette smoke at up to 1,000 ppm, and probably represents one of the greatest exogenous sources of NO to which humans are exposed. We investigated whether cigarette smoking reduces the production of endogenous NO and whether it influences the action of lipopolysaccharide(LPS) to induce nitric oxide synthase activity in mouse brain. Mice(C57BL6/J) were exposed to cigarette smoke for 8 weeks. LPS was injected intraperitoneally in single or combination with the exposure to cigarette smoke. Six hours after the injection of LPS, mice were sacrificed and sera and brains were collected. Serum concentrations of nitrate and nitrite were not charged by 4-week smoke exposure, but were significantly increased by 6 and 8 weeks of smoke exposure. Interestingly, cigarette smoke reduced the elevation in serum nitrate and nitrite concentrations produced by LPS after 4-week smoking exposure. NO synthase(NOS) activity in brain was upregulated by LPS-administration. However, cigarette smoke exposure remarkably and consistently decreased the LPS-induced activity in mouse brain. This result suggests that cigarette smoking may affect against overproduction of the endogenous NO by LPS through the inhibition of NOS activity induced by LPS in brain or by modulation of the LPS action for the induction of NOS activity. We also suggest the possibility that the exogenous NO evolved in cigarette smoke enables feedback inhibition of NOS activity or other possibility that it attenuates the toxicity of endotoxin LPS in vivo by unknown mechanisms, which should be further studied.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) on toxification/detoxification metabolic pathway in primary cultured rat hepatocytes. We measured the activities of cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYP450s) and UDP-glucuronyltransferase, sulfotransferase and glutathione-S-transferase in CSC-treated rat hepatocytes. CSC significantly increased the activities of hepatic CYP4501A1 and CYP4501A2 to 7.5 fold and 1.6 fold respectively, compared with control level. However, CSC did not affect the activities of conjugation enzymes. We a1so examined if treatment of CSC could change thc cytotoxicity of acetaminophen (AA) through modulation of metabolizing enzymes. In rat hepatocytes, pretreatment with CSC potentiated the cytotoxicity of AA. This result indicates that potentiation of AA toxicity by CSC pretreatment may be related to induction of CYP4501A1 and CYP4501A2.
This study was conducted to identify problems in domestic flame-retardant performance specifications. Currently, the domestic wallcovering anti-inflammatory regulations are not prepared for damage caused by smoke, with the carbonized area as the main function. In particular, given that smoke is the main cause of human casualties and injuries in a fire, it is reasonable that the flame density and toxicity of the wallcovering should also be the main performance indicators. The scope and method of research in this study were as follows. First, a prior study related to fire on various wallcoverings was considered. Second, it raised questions about the effects of smoke in the event of a fire and domestic anti-inflammatory performance tests. Third, textile wallcovering samples were manufactured with viscose rayon for experimental verification of the problems and tested by Korean and EU standards without flame retardant processing to analyze the differences between each regulation. Fourth, the performance of flame retardant wallcovering according to Korean standards was evaluated using smoke density and harmful gas testing methods. The results of each test were as follows. Non-fire retardant wallcovering was rejected by Korea standards. However, B-s1.d0 in Europe. Smoke density testing and harmful gas by domestic combustion processing on the same sample showed that the smoke density increased about 4.3 times more than before, and the harmful gas test showed that the suspension of the post-processing sample slowed earlier than the non-processed sample.
