The Effect of Cooled EGR and Oxygenate Fuel(EGBE) on the Diesel Engine Performance and Emissions (함산소연료(EGBE)와 Cooled EGR이 디젤기관의 성능과 배기배출물에 미치는 영향)

  • In this paper, the effect of oxygen component in fuel on the exhaust emissions has been investigated fur direct injection diesel engine. It was tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the commercial diesel fuel and oxygenated blended fuel which has seven kinds of mixed ratio. And, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission have been investigated. Ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether(EGBE) contains oxygen component 27% in itself, and it is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel of mono-ether group that the smoke emission and unburned hydrocarbons of EGBE is reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficiently at higher loads and speeds in diesel engine. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with oxygenated fuel and cooled EGR method.

  • Our environment is faced with serious problems related to the air pollution from automobiles in these days. In particular, the exhaust emissions of diesel engine are recognized main cause which influenced environment strong. In this study, the potential possibility of biodiesel fuel was investigated as an alternative fuel for a naturally aspirated common rail diesel engine. The smoke emission of biodiesel fuel 30vol-%(max. content) was reduced in comparison with diesel fuel, that is, it was reduced approximately 60% at 4000rpm, full load. But, power, torque and brake specific energy consumption didn't have no large differences. But, NOx emission of biodiesel fuel was increased compared with commercial diesel fuel.

  • Many research works have been carried out to investigate the factors governing the performance of diesel engine. The area of the study has been focused on reducing both of NOx and smoke because of many difficulties to reduce them simultaneously in diesel engines. One of the efforts is an application of EGR technology to reduce NOx emission, which is very effective, but increases other emissions and makes fuel economy worse. In order to solve the problem, EGR is employed with water emulsified fuel and tested in this paper. Emulsified fuel is produced by centrifugal mixer and the amount of water is controlled by water injector and pulse generator, and EGR rate is controlled with 6-step control valve. The chamber pressure, fuel consumption and emissions are measured with various values of both EGR and water mixing rate, The results show that NOx emission is reduced much rather and smoke is also reduced simultaneously.

  • This study is to consider that the helical intake port flow and fuel injection system have effects on the characteristics of engine performance and emissions in a turbocharged DI diesel engine of the displacement 9.4L. The swirl ratio for ports was modified by hand-working and measured by impulse torque swirl meter, For the effects on performance and emission, the brake torque, BSFC were measured by engine dynamometer and NOx, smoke were by gas analyzer and smoke meter. As a result of steady flow test, when the valve eccentricity ratio are closed to cylinder wall, the flow coefficient and swirl intensity are increased, And as the swirl is increased, the mean flow coefficient is decreasing, whereas the gulf factor is increasing. Also, through engine test its can be expected to meet performance and emission by the following applied parameter; the swirl ratio is 2.43, injection timing is BTDC $13^{\circ}$CA and compression is 15.5.

  • Improvements of fuel properties have become essential for exhaust emission reduction as well as for optimization of directly-related design factors and exhaust gas aftertreatment. In this study, the potential possibility of oxygenated fuel such as ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether(EGBE) was investigated for the sake of smoke reduction from diesel engine. Because EGBE include oxygen content approximately 27%, it is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel that the smoke emission of EGBE is reduced remarkably in comparison with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficient at high load and speed in diesel engine. And, it was tried to analyze the quantities of the low and high boiling point hydrocarbon among the exhaust emissions in diesel engine. It have been investigated by the quantitative analysis of the hydrocarbon $C_1$~ $C_{6}$ using the gas chromatography. This study was carried out by comparing the chromatogram with diesel fuel and diesel fuel blended EGBE 20vo1-%. The results of this study show that the hydrocarbon $C_1$~C$_{6}$ among the exhaust emission of the mixed fuels are exhausted lower than those of the diesel fuel at the all load and speed. In particular, high boiling point hydrocarbons such as $C_{5}$ and $C_{6}$ were reduced remarkably at high speed and load.d.

Combustion Characteristics Analysis of a Non-class 1E Cable for Nuclear Power Plants according to Aging Period (경년열화 기간에 따른 원자력발전소용 비안전등급 케이블의 연소특성 분석)

  • In this study, combustion and smoke release characteristics of a non-class 1E cable for nuclear power plants were investigated according to aging period. The aging was reproduced through an accelerated aging method for interval of 10 years :10, 20, 30 and 40 year, which was applied the Arrhenius equation. The cable was subjected to accelerated aging. In order to understand combustion and smoke release characteristics, the cone calorimeter test was performed according to the standard code of KS F ISO 5660-1. Heat release rate, mass loss rate, average rate of heat emission and smoke production rate were examined through cone calorimeter test. Fire performance index, fire growth index and smoke factor were derived from test results for the comparison of quantitative fire risk. When comparing the fire performance index and the fire growth index, the early fire risk tends to decrease as aging progresses, which might be attributed from the fact that the volatile substances of cables were evaporated. However, when comparing the heat release rate, average rate of heat emission and mass loss rate, which represent the mid and late periods of the fire risk, the values of accelerated aging cables were much higher than those of non-aged cable, which signifies the unstable formation of the char layer resulted in the change in the performance of flame retardants. In addition, the results from the smoke characteristics show that the accelerated aging cables were lager than the non-aged cables in terms of overall fire risk. These results can be used as baseline data when assessing fire risk of cables and establishing fire safety code for nuclear power plants.

  • Over the past years, many research works have been carried out to investigate the factors which govern the performance of diesel engine. The air pollutant emission from the diesel engine is still a significant environmental concern in many countries. In the present study, new system of smoke filtration of diesel engine is proposed. This new system is using vacuum equipment and filter for capture smoke. To verification new system experiments are performed at diesel vehicle and engine dynamometer. As a result it is founded that smoke is decreased of 67% at vehicle test and decrease of 45.2% at full load condition of engine dynamometer test.

  • Smoke evolved from burning cellulose insulation treated with boric acid-borax-alum as combustion retardants has been studied using a light absorption method. It has been shown that the quantity of smoke are decreased with the increase of oxygen concentration. Applied fire retardants did not increase smoke generation from investigated cellulose insulation in range of themal degradation without flaming. These same fire retardants increased from in the range of flaming combustion. The results of this work have been analysed using imperical equation, which correlated the smoke density at oxygen content of combustion transition. This equation may be. $\sigma$=$\sigma$$_{T}$ exp{-7.24$\times$10$^{-7}$ ( $O_2$ $O_{2.T}$)}Where $O_2$is the concentration of oxygen in the oxidizing gas, and $O_{2.T}$ refers to oxygen concentration of combustion transition.n.n.n.
