Retraction: A numerical study on the fire smoke behavior by operating the fire prevention system in tunnel-type structure (논문 취소: 터널형 구조물의 방재시설 가동에 따른 화재연기 거동에 관한 수치 해석적 연구)

  • In this study, behaviors of fire smoke in the operation of disaster prevention facilities (smoke damper, jet fan) in a tunnel-type structure (soundproof tunnel) were investigated numerically and results of the investigation were compared and analyzed. Through the simulation and analysis, it was found that there was a significant change in the patterns of fire smoke between the opening of the ceiling of a fire vehicle and the closing, and it was shown that the critical temperatures of PC and PMMA, main materials of a soundproof tunnel were not exceeded. In addition, the simulation of installation intervals of smoke dampers showed that the maximum temperature of a soundproof tunnel without smoke dampers was $552^{\circ}C$ while it reached $405^{\circ}C$ when smoke dampers were installed at the installation interval of 50 m. The simulation of the operation of a jet fan showed that the maximum temperature of a soundproof tunnel without a jet fan was $549^{\circ}C$ while it reached only $86^{\circ}C$ when a jet fan was operating. Therefore, it is highly expected that they could create a favorable environment for evacuation and protection of soundproofing materials, and it would be necessary to promote basic studies on tunnels serving various functions and purposes.

Psychological Problems and Psychosocial Predictors of Cigarette Smoking Behavior among Undergraduate Students in Malaysia

  • Background: Cigarette smokers have their own motivation and justification to smoke. For example, smoking reduces their stress or enhances their pleasure. This study aimed to identify the (a) prevalence of cigarette smokers among undergraduates in Malaysia, (b) gender differences in nicotine dependence among current smokers, (c) differences in psychological problems (depression, anxiety and stress) based on the status of smoking cigarettes (current, former and non-smokers) and (d) extent to which precipitating factors (tension reduction, addiction, automatism, handling, social interaction, pleasure, and stimulation) predict the smoking behavior among current smokers. Materials and Methods: In this study 780 undergraduate students participated from a private university in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor state in Malaysia. The Depression, Stress and Anxiety Scale, Modified Reason for Smoking Scale and Fagerstrom Nicotine Dependence Test were used to measure psychological problems, predictors of smoking behavior and nicotine dependency among current smokers. Results: The results showed that 14.7%(n=106) of the students were smokers. Current smokers exhibited more psychological problems (depression, anxiety and stress) compared to former and non-smokers. Addiction, tension reduction, pleasure and automatism were predictors of smoking behavior among the current smoking students. Step wise regression analysis showed that smoking behavior was highly predicted by nicotine dependency or addiction. Smoking students were motivated to smoke cigarettes as they believed that it reduced their tension and enhance pleasure. Conclusions: Hence, there is a need for health promotion and anti-tobacco prevention as cigarette smokers experience more psychological problems. Nicotine dependency or addition was one of the major causes for smoking behavior among the student population in Malaysia.

A Numerical Study on the Fire Behavior Phenomena in a Special Fire Protection Compartment (특수 방호공간에서 가상화재의 발생으로 인한 화재거동에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • The objective of the present study is to predict the characteristics of the fire and smoke propagations in a clean room. Numerical calculations have been performed by using the finite volume method to obtain temperature and velocity distributions in the clean room. In odor to account for the turbulent flow characteristics, the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is used. From this study, it was found that the fire propagation could be fully developed only after 150 seconds when the ventilation system in the clean room was off. And the smoke mass fraction showed a similar distribution as the gas temperature. Since the simulated fire was proceeded up to $20{\sim}30%$ of the room within 60 seconds. it could be recommended that the occupants should be evacuated from the room within 30 seconds.

Assessment of Nutritional Status and Factors Related to Smoking in Adolescent Males -II. Psychosocial Factors Influencing Smoking among Male High School Students- (남자 고등학생 흡연자의 영양상태 판정 및 흡연관련 요인분석 -II. 흡연과 관련된 사회심리적 요인에 대한 연구-)

  • The study purpose was to investigate psychosocial factors related to smoking among adolescent boys. The Theory of Planned Behavior provide the basis for the study. Twenty-five attitudinal beliefs, 9 normative beliefs and 20control beliefs were identified through questionnaire development. The data were analyzed using t-test and χ2-test. Thirty-three percent of 300 students were smokers. Most of the beliefs examined were significantly different between smokers(n=92) and nonsmokers(n=92). With respect to attitudinal beliefs, smokers responded less negatively on the items of bad health effects of smoking such as sore throat, headache, chest pain, risk of cancer and bad blood circulation(p<0.001), and decreased physical strength(p<0.05). Smokers believed less negatively on the items that smoking leads to bothering others, bad breath, yellow teeth and making them spend money(p<0.001). In contrast, smokers felt more positively on smoking as a means of stress management, relaxing, helping digestion(P<0.001). Smokers felt less pressure for not smoking from significant others. Especially mother, siblings, friends, girl friends, seniors of school were important sources of influence regarding subject's smoking. Smokers felt less confident in controlling the urge to smoke in several situations including; when they were with friends or asked to smoke by friends; after the meal, or drinking; when they were bored or stressed, upset, and when they felt unstable(p<0.001). Smokers also scored lower on specific skills to quit or control the urge to smoke as well as overall perceived control, compared to nonsmokers(p<0.001). These results suggest that interventions for adolescents incorporate diverse strategies to increase the perceived control over smoking in specific situations as well as overall perceived control, to help them realize and modify attitudinal beliefs, and to elicit support from significant others for not smoking. Simulation of Heat and Smoke Behavior for Wood and Subway Fires by Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS) (FDS에 의한 목재 및 지하철 화재의 열 및 연기 거동 시뮬레이션)

  • In this study, to propose the analysis method of heat and smoke behavior of fire using the CFD-based fire simulator FDS, comparison of the simulation results against the experimental results and the sensitivity of the results to the grid sizes have been investigated. For the wood fire, thermal images captured from the experiments were compared against the FDS simulations, and the maximum temperatures agreed in~4.3 % error, showing the applicability of FDS in the interpretation of the fire phenomena. In the aspect of the sensitivity to the grid size for the subway fire, FDS results of smoke temperature, CO concentration and visibility converged and showed no distinct changes for the grid size < $28(L){\times}28(W){\times}14(H)$, guaranteeing that the FDS fire model set in this research could interpret the fire phenomena successfully.

Gender Differences in the Association between Psycho-social Factors and Smoking, Drinking in Adolescents (성별에 따른 청소년의 흡연, 음주와 심리사회적 요인과의 관계연구)

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the gender difference of relationship between psycho-social factors ana smoking, drinking in adolescents. Method: The stratified cluster sample consisted of 925 adolescents. Data were collected from May to March 2002. The instruments used in this study were Perceived Stress, DES-D, Social Support and Self-Esteem. Results: The results showed that female had more perceived stress, depressed than male. Male had more social support network, smoke than female. Male who smoked cigarettes were more perceived stress, depressed than those who did not smoke. Female who smoked cigarettes were more social support network, and had less self-esteem than those who did not smoke. Also male who drank alcohol were more perceived stress, depressed than those who did not drank. Female who drank alcohol were perceived stress, depressed, social support network, and had less self-esteem than those who did not drank. Conclusion: It is hoped that much more research on gender difference in adolescents who smoked cigarettes, drank alcohol will be implemented in the future. In addition, it is suggested the application of various interventions to deal with drinking and smoking behavior among female and male adolescents.

  • In this study boundary velocity which is one of the important boundary conditions for numerical simulation for subway station on fire are experimentally obtained. The tests were conducted according to its operating mode of the ventilation systems in the platform: smoke extraction ventilation mode in occurrence of fire and normal ventilation mode for air conditioning. Velocities are measured at various points on the platform. To examine smoke extraction and air supply capacity in the platform level, air velocities were checked on opening vents. Numerical analysis under normal ventilation mode without fire is conducted by using measured boundary conditions, and the numerical results are compared with the measured velocities on the platform.

  • In the present study a 1D-3D numerical simulation was performed to analyze the fire safety in a rescue station of a long railroad tunnel equipped with a mechanical ventilation. The behavior of hot air was studied for the emergency operation mode of ventilation system in case of fire in the rescue station. The 1D simulation was carried out for entire tunnel region. Detailed 3D CFD simulation was performed for the rescue station area in the central region of the tunnel by using the result of the 1D simulation as the boundary condition of the 3D simulation. Various type of cross passage installation were evaluated for the prevention of smoke diffusion to suggest the optimized interval of the cross passages in the rescue tunnel.
