In case of tunnel fire, one of the most effective facilities to save lives is the smoke control system. In this study, two different smoke extraction schemes of transversely ventilated tunnel were compared. One is the smoke extraction using the fixed exhaust ports on the false ceiling to achieve the uniform and distributed smoke extraction (uniform exhaust). The other is that using the remote controlled smoke extraction where only vents close to the fire is opened whereas the others are closed to enhance the limitation of the smoke spread (localized exhaust). A number of numerical simulations were performed to find out the optimal smoke extraction rate at each smoke extraction scheme to allow the tunnel users to escape to the safe area without endangering their lives by smoke.
To evaluate the smoke control systems, the large eddy simulation turbulence model based Fire Dynamics Simulate was applied to a 2m $\times$ 2m $\times$ 2.4m room with an opening. The smoke removal rate was investigated for three different smoke control systems: ventilation, extraction and pressurization. When the opening was closed, the smoke removal rates of the smoke control systems were almost the same as expected. The pressurization system showed a lower smoke removal rate compared with the other two smoke control systems for the room with the opening, and hence the pressurization system might not be efficient for a place with large openings. It was shown that the lower extraction flowrate is, the longer time the ventilation system requires to remove smoke. From these results, the ventilation system is recommended for subway stations where several large openings exist.
The objective of this study is to analyze the smoke extraction efficiency using by the partial extraction system with CFD simulation for case of tunnel fire. The Comparison of CFD results with the preceding scaled model test results, it is equal to the smoke extraction efficiency and smoke stratification in tunnel by the partial smoke extraction system (distributed damper). It shows that the smoke extraction efficiency is increased about 7% by the distributed damper which is opened near fire, compare with the distributed damper which is all opened. The case of the fire occurs on a traffic jam in a tunnel, it is proposed that the operating method of partial smoke extraction system for the escaping passengers.
The purpose of this research is focussed on the numerical predictions of the heat and smoke propagations for a passenger train fire in an underground subway tunnel for different air supply and extraction flowrates. The analysis is performed for one of the stations on subway line #5 in Seoul under the emergency operation mode for different air supply and extraction flowrates. Five different the air supply and extraction flowrates are considered for the numerical analyses. The numerical results show that the air supply and extraction flowrates affect the smoke control performance significantly by improving the smoke removal performance for the balanced control of air supply and smoke extraction and for the unbalanced control with lager smoke extraction than air supply.

The objective of this study is to analyze the smoke movement and the smoke extraction efficiency using by the partial extraction system for case of tunnel fire. Based on Froude modeling and isothermal model, the 1/20 scaled model tunnel (12m long) was constructed. In the case of the upper critical velocity in the main tunnel, the smoke extraction efficiency shows almost same between group damper and distributed damper. Finally, if the fire occurs on a traffic Jam in a tunnel, it is proposed that the open dampers in partial gallery extract smoke from the main tunnel without jet fan operation. Then, after the passengers have escaped the tunnel, the jet fans work on. On the other hand, If the traffic is uncongested in the tunnel, the jet fans (smoke control system) and partial extraction system (smoke exhaust system) are operated at once in tunnel fire.
In Part II, the temperature and smoke particle distributions of the extraction system, which yielded the best smoke removal performance among the three smoke control systems in Part I, for extraction flowrates of 0.6∼2.4 ㎥/s and two fire sizes of 200 ㎾ and 2 ㎿ were presented. The same numerical method was utilized to the same computational domain and configurations as Part I. It was shown that the extraction flowrate affects the smoke control performance significantly, and that a similar trend in improving the smoke removal performance with the increasing extraction flowrate between the two fire sizes. An extraction flowrate of 2.4 ㎥/s or higher was required for the temperature in the escape route less than $^{\circ}C$ for the given situations.

In order to resolve traffic problems in urban areas and to increase the area of green spaces, tunnels in downtown areas are being increased. Additionally, the application of large port smoke extraction ventilation systems is increasing as a countermeasure to smoke extraction ventilation for tunnels with high potential for traffic congestion. It is known that the smoke extraction performance of the large port smoke extraction system is influenced not only by the amount of the extraction flow rate, but also by various factors such as the shape of the extraction port (damper) and the extraction air velocity through a damper. Therefore, in this study, the design standards and installation status of each country were investigated. When the extraction air flow rate was the same, the smoke extraction performance according to the size of the damper was numerically simulated in terms of smoke propagation distance, compared and evaluated, and the following results were obtained. As the cross-sectional area of the smoke damper increases, the extraction flow rate is concentrated in the damper close to the extraction fan, and the smoke extraction rate of the damper in downstream decreases, thereby increasing the smoke propagation distance on the downstream side. In order to prevent such a phenomenon, it is necessary to reduce the cross-sectional area of the smoke damper and increase the velocity of passing air through the damper so that the pressure loss passing through the damper increases, thereby reducing the non-uniformity of smoke extraction flow rate in the extraction section. In this analysis, it was found that when the interval distance of the extraction damper was 50 m, the air velocity passing through damper was 4.4 m/s or more, and when the interval distance of the extraction dampers was 100 m, the air velocity passing through damper was greater than 4.84 m/s, it was found to be advantageous to ensure smoke extraction performance.
The large eddy simulation based Fire Dynamics Simulator was utilized to investigate the effects of the size of an opening on smoke removal performance for the three smoke control systems-ventilation purge, and extraction. Three different opening sizes, $r_A$=1, 2, and 3 were investigated while the flow rate remained 0.75 $m^3/s$ at the inlet or outlet depending on the systems. Increase of the opening size did not give a significant difference in the smoke removal rate for the three smoke control systems, though the increasing opening size slightly improved smoke removal. The extraction system was shown the best smoke control system, and the purge system yielded low performance compared to the other two systems for all the different opening sizes.
Medium and high-resolution optical satellites have proven their effectiveness in detecting wildfire areas. However, smoke plumes generated by wildfire scatter visible light incidents on the surface, thereby interrupting accurate monitoring of the area where wildfire occurs. Therefore, a technology to extract smoke in advance is required. Deep learning technology is expected to improve the accuracy of smoke extraction, but the lack of training datasets limits the application. However, for clouds, which have a similar property of scattering visible light, a large amount of training datasets has been accumulated. The purpose of this study is to develop a smoke extraction technique using deep learning, and the limits due to the lack of datasets were overcome by using a cloud dataset on transfer learning. To check the effectiveness of transfer learning, a small-scale smoke extraction training set was made, and the smoke extraction performance was compared before and after applying transfer learning using a public cloud dataset. As a result, not only the performance in the visible light wavelength band was enhanced but also in the near infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR). Through the results of this study, it is expected that the lack of datasets, which is a critical limit for using deep learning on smoke extraction, can be solved, and therefore, through the advancement of smoke extraction technology, it will be possible to present an advantage in monitoring wildfires.
Experiments were carried out to investigate smoke movement in platform of a subway station which currently is in service in Pusan, the second largest city in Korea. The recently constructed underground station of the "bank type" (two platforms on both sides of track) which is the popular layout of platforms in Korea, is chosen in Pusan. The smoke generator and heater are used for simulating the smoke movement at the fire break in the platform located in the 2nd basement of the station. Video recordings were used to monitor smoke lowering. In this study, the movements of smoke in the underground station are investigated under various smoke-control operating modes. Three tests wire conducted according to its operating mode of the ventilation systems in the platform: no operation of any ventilation systems, smoke extraction mode in occurrence of fire (presently running mode) and full capacity of smoke extraction where all vents are activated in the platform. The results can be used for comparing with the numerical prediction results of fire subway stations.
