  • South Korea's smart factory drive is at a very important point. While large-scale funds and manpower are invested to secure international competitiveness and revitalize manufacturing, software investments that are only approached by IT suppliers may end up creating systems that do not meet the actual conditions of the field. As a result, there are problems in the manufacturing sector that can cause consumers to feel the fatigue of innovation in the manufacturing sector. SMEs should check from scratch and establish a gradual integration system so that they can reduce failures in IT investments and implement OT-oriented smart factories that are well utilized in the field. To this end, a process visualization solution was proposed and a step-by-step innovation was proposed at the basic level and the ICT unapplied level.

  • Smart card data is widely used in the public transportation field. Despite the inevitability of various errors occur during the data collection and storage; however, smart card data errors have not been extensively studied. This paper investigates inherent errors in boarding and alighting station information in smart card data. A comparison smart card data and bus boarding and alighting survey data for the same time frame shows that boarding station names differ by 6.2% between the two data sets. This indicates that the error rate of smart card data is 6.2% in terms of boarding station information, given that bus boarding and alighting survey data can be considered as ground truth. This paper propose 6-step algorithm for correcting errors in smart card boarding station information, linking them to corresponding information in Bus Information System(BIS) Data. Comparing BIS data and bus boarding and alighting survey data for the same time frame reveals that boarding station names correspond by 98.3% between the two data sets, indicating that BIS data can be used as reliable reference for ground truth. To evaluate its performance, applying the 6-step algorithm proposed in this paper to smart card data set shows that the error rate of boarding station information is reduced from 6.2% to 1.0%, resulting in a 5.2%p improvement in the accuracy of smart card data. It is expected that the proposed algorithm will enhance the process of adjusting bus routes and making decisions related to public transportation infrastructure investments.

  • In this paper, the fire extinguisher maintenance system using smart NFC communication and the real-time pressure measurement is proposed. The proposed system consists of three steps in the flow of information. The first step is to identify the fire extinguisher through NFC tagging in the fire extinguisher module using the smart device. The fire extinguisher appearance check and the real-time pressure measurement is performed in the second step, and the last step sends the check status information to the management server. In particular, the actual pressure value is calculated based on the angle of the green area and the indicating needle. Some experiments are conducted so as to verify the proposed system, and as a result, the proposed system shows that the administrator can effectively control the status information of fire safety check.

  • This paper gives a review on three illumination issues of face tracking on smart phones: dark scenes, sudden lighting change and backlit effect. First, we propose a fast and robust face tracking method utilizing continuous adaptive mean shift algorithm (CAMSHIFT) and CbCr skin locus. Initially, the skin locus obtained from training video data. After that, a modified CAMSHIFT version based on the skin locus is accordingly provided. Second, we suggest an enhancement method to increase the chance of detecting faces, an important initialization step for face tracking, under dark illumination. The proposed method works comparably with traditional CAMSHIFT or particle filter, and outperforms these methods when dealing with our public video data with the three illumination issues mentioned above.

  • An advanced angular position detector (APD) for the SMART CEDM (control element drive mechanism) was designed. The APD is required to be small size with high resolution for angular displacement of rotary step motor. Unfortunately the proximity sensors can not be adopted to SMART CEDM because the motor shaft is located in the pressure boundary cylinder filled with the primary coolant under high temperature and pressure. This paper describes the electromagnetic finite element analysis for the design of advanced angular position detector for the SMART CEDM. The electromagnetic properties obtained will be used as Input for the optimization analysis of the APD.

  • We present a fast algorithm for Korean text extraction and segmentation from subway signboards using smart phone sensors in order to minimize computational time and memory usage. The algorithm can be used as preprocessing steps for optical character recognition (OCR): binarization, text location, and segmentation. An image of a signboard captured by smart phone camera while holding smart phone by an arbitrary angle is rotated by the detected angle, as if the image was taken by holding a smart phone horizontally. Binarization is only performed once on the subset of connected components instead of the whole image area, resulting in a large reduction in computational time. Text location is guided by user's marker-line placed over the region of interest in binarized image via smart phone touch screen. Then, text segmentation utilizes the data of connected components received in the binarization step, and cuts the string into individual images for designated characters. The resulting data could be used as OCR input, hence solving the most difficult part of OCR on text area included in natural scene images. The experimental results showed that the binarization algorithm of our method is 3.5 and 3.7 times faster than Niblack and Sauvola adaptive-thresholding algorithms, respectively. In addition, our method achieved better quality than other methods.

  • Smart structural systems are defined as ones that demonstrate the ability to modify their characteristics and/or properties in order to respond favorably to unexpected severe loading conditions. The performance of such a task requires a set of additional components to be integrated within such systems. These components belong to three major categories, sensors, processors and actuators. It is wellknown that all structural systems entail some level of uncertainty, because of their extremely complex nature, lack of complete information, simplifications and modeling. Similarly, sensors, processors and actuators are expected to reflect a similar uncertain behavior. As it is imperative to be able to evaluate the impact of such components on the behavior of the system, it is as important to ensure, or at least evaluate, the reliability of such components. In this paper, a system model for reliability assessment of smart structural systems is outlined. The presented model is considered a necessary first step in the development of a reliability assessment algorithm for smart structural systems. The system model outlines the basic components of the system, in addition to, performance functions and inter-relations among individual components. A fault tree model is developed in order to aggregate the individual underlying component reliabilities into an overall system reliability measure. Identification of appropriate limit states for all underlying components are beyond the scope of this paper. However, it is the objective of this paper to set up the necessary framework for identifying such limit states. A sample model for a three-story single bay smart rigid frame, is developed in order to demonstrate the proposed framework.
