  • In this paper, we propose a framework for improving the performance of semantic segmentation of agricultural multispectral image using feature fusion techniques. Most of the semantic segmentation models being studied in the field of smart farms are trained on RGB images and focus on increasing the depth and complexity of the model to improve performance. In this study, we go beyond the conventional approach and optimize and design a model with multispectral and attention mechanisms. The proposed method fuses features from multiple channels collected from a UAV along with a single RGB image to increase feature extraction performance and recognize complementary features to increase the learning effect. We study the model structure to focus on feature fusion and compare its performance with other models by experimenting with favorable channels and combinations for crop images. The experimental results show that the model combining RGB and NDVI performs better than combinations with other channels.

  • In this paper, we study on aerial objects detection and position estimation algorithm for the safety of UAV that flight in BVLOS. We use the vision sensor and LiDAR to detect objects. We use YOLOv2 architecture based on CNN to detect objects on a 2D image. Additionally we use a clustering method to detect objects on point cloud data acquired from LiDAR. When a single sensor used, detection rate can be degraded in a specific situation depending on the characteristics of sensor. If the result of the detection algorithm using a single sensor is absent or false, we need to complement the detection accuracy. In order to complement the accuracy of detection algorithm based on a single sensor, we use the Kalman filter. And we fused the results of a single sensor to improve detection accuracy. We estimate the 3D position of the object using the pixel position of the object and distance measured to LiDAR. We verified the performance of proposed fusion algorithm by performing the simulation using the Gazebo simulator.

  • The developing Smart UAV in KARI supposes high speed flight as like a conventional plane, as well as vertical takeoff and landing as like a helicopter. Therefore, the air intake system should be designed to provide the sufficient air flow to the engine and the maximum possible total pressure recovery at the engine intake screen over a wide range of flight conditions. For this purpose, we designed the intake system using a pitor type intake model and plenum chamber. In this paper, we designed the intake model and analyzed the performance of designed intake system using the general-purpose commercial CFD code, CFD-ACE+. The analysis results of the total pressure variation and the velocity distribution were illustrated in this paper. The pressure recovery and distortion coefficient at a plane coincident with the compressor inlet were calculated and streamline variation through the intake system was investigated at the worst flight condition as well as the standard flight condition.

  • There will come someday when UAUs can fly into the airspace of manned aircraft in the near future because of the increasing number of operational UAUs together with technologies development. Since pilots of UAVs are on the gound, the equipment for sensing and avoiding obstacles in front is indispensable. In this paper, we analyze functions and interfaces of TCAS II, a collision avoidance device for manned aircraft, then find out whether it is suitable for the collision avoidance device for UAV and problems associated with it, if any. It turns out to be that the onboard directional antenna of TCAS II does not provide a precise directional information, and that the TCAS II is not assumed to be installed alone, but used as supplementary with other device which provides the better precision.

  • The purpose of the present study is to develop lightweight and simple smart actuators in order to replace conventional hydraulic/pneumatic actuators, and to apply the developed actuators to the actuation systems of a small unmanned air vehicle. This research describes the procedures of design, manufacturing of the piezo-composite actuator, and the performance evaluation. From the test results of the developed devices, we found the possibility of piezo-composite actuator could be used as a control surface of a small UAV system. We have designed and manufactured two kinds of piezo-composite actuators, unimorph actuator and bimorph actuator. The manufactured actuators were evaluated through the performance testes. It was found that the bimorph type actuator showed more linear angle change for the same excitation voltage variation than unimorph type. It is expected that piezo-composite actuator has a possibility to be used not only as a control surface of small unmanned flying vehicle but also as a control surface actuator of a guided missile fin through the miniaturization of power supply and control system.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a network system for UAV for multiple clients that enables long-range operation based on a commercial mobile network. A prototype data modem is developed with a commercial embedded M2M module in order to provide an access to the mobile network. A central server with a database is constructed to record all of real-time flight and video data and communicate with a ground control system. A GCS is developed for the central control, the single UAV and the smart phone version to be used for different purposes. Performance tests were progressed for data delay, video frame rate and state of clients. Flight tests were also performed to verify the reliability of the modem with respect to altitude.

  • The author tried to propose the orthographic and DTM (digital terrain model) creation and evaluate the accuracy for an university campus using UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) system. Most previous studies used GPS-based data, but in this paper, the observations of triangulation level measurements was used for comparison of accuracy. Accuracy analysis results showed that the operational requirements for aerial photographic standards are satisfied in all scenaries. The author confirmed availability in aviation photo measurements and applications using UAV (Drone). In order to create a sophisticated DTM and contour, we need to eliminate interference from building, trees, and artificial objects. The results of this study are expected to be used as the basis for future studies in the creation of DTM and the accuracy assessments using Drone.

  • The high temperature occurs due to the combustion gas from engine in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The high temperature may cause serious damages in UAV structure. The Functionally Graded Material (FGM) is chosen as a candidate material of the engine duct structure. A functionally graded material (FGM) is a two- component mixture composed by compositional gradient materials from one material to the other. In contrast, traditional composite materials are homogeneous mixtures, and involve compositions between the desirable properties of the component materials. Since significant proportions of an FGM contain the pure form of each material, the need for compromise is eliminated. The properties of both components can be fully utilized. Thermal stress analysis of FGM layers (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100) is performed in this paper. In addition, the creep behavior of FGM applied in duct structure of an engine is analyzed for better understanding of FGM characteristics.

  • Shape memory alloys (SMAs) find many applications in smart composite structural systems as the active components. Their ability to provide a high force and large displacement makes them an excellent candidate for an actuator for controlling the shape of smart structures. In this paper, using a macroscopic model that captures the thermo-mechanical behaviors and the two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) of SMAs smart morphing polymeric composite shell structures like shape-changeable UAV wings is demonstrated and analyzed numerically and experimentally when subjected to various kinds of pressure loads. The controllable shapes of the morphing shells to that thin SMA strip actuator are attached are investigated depending on various phase transformation temperatures. SMA strips start to transform from the martensitic into the austenitic state upon actuation through resistive heating, simultaneously recover the prestrain, and thus cause the shell structures to deform three dimensionally. The behaviors of composite shells attached with SMA strip actuators are analyzed using the finite element methods and 3-D constitutive equations of SMAs. Several morphing composite shell structures are fabricated and their experimental shape changes depending on temperatures are compared to the numerical results. That two results show good correlations indicates the finite element analysis and 3-D constitutive equations are accurate enough to utilize them for the design of smart composite shell structures for various applications.

  • Matrix dominant properties of composites are largely degraded under harmful environments such as temperature and humidity. Therefore we should consider the harmful environmental factors in the design of an UAV integral fuel tank subjected to high temperature and high humidity. The harmful environment experiment was performed for carbon/epoxy composites made of a unidirectional prepreg USN175B, and a plain woven fabric prepreg WSN3. The immersion experiment was performed under $90^{\circ}C$. The specimens were tested when the weight gam of specimen was saturated. The specimens were tested under $74^{\circ}C$ to obtain tensile and inplane shear properties. The results showed that the matrix dominant properties were extremely degraded by hygrothermal environment. To consider the variability of load, the anti-optimization method was applied. By using this method, the worst load case was found by comparing the load convex model and stability boundary. The stability boundary was obtained by analysis of the integral wing fuel tank of UAV using degraded properties. To do this, it was known that the worst load case of the integral wing fuel tank was the hovering mode load case.
