  • Recent power industries are to be progressed as moving into horizontal markets and expanding of competitive systems through promoting SmartGrid. In these environments, the information on power consumers leads to establish a part of power markets through active and real-time participations instead of participating it as a passive manner presented by a vertical integration. Also, such information should be established as a way that effectively reflects changes and market behaviors occurred in power market participants. Therefore, in this study, a method that develops consumer information models, performs integrated managements, implements registration and distribution, and forms integrated management centers is presented to commonly use the consumer information according to the change in the environment of power industries.

  • Recently, the smart grid (SG) has been introduced to solve the serious network issues caused by the increasing electrical demand and the complex nonlinear nature of the electric power distribution network. The SG, regarded as the next generation power grid, can transmit power in more efficient ways by building an automatic and distributed energy delivery network. In this paper, we first assess how various existing networking technologies, such as IEEE 802.11 (WiFi) and IEEE 802.15.4 (ZigBee), meet the requirements of the SG communication protocols. Specifically, we classify the existing network protocols into three categories: WSN-based networking, WiFi-based networking, and wireline-based networking. We then survey the security issues regarding the SG. Finally, we propose an agile SG networking architecture and show the effectiveness of different adopted networking technologies and, as a result, present a candidate solution to implement agile networking in SGs.

  • As Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle and Electric Vehicle (PHEV/EV) take a greater share in the personal automobile market, their high penetration levels may bring potential challenges to electric utility especially at the distribution level. Thus, there is a need for the flexible charging management strategy to compromise the benefits of both PHEV/EV owners and power grid side. There are many different management methods that depend on the objective function and the constraints caused by the system. In this paper, the schema and dispatching schedule of centralized PHEV/EV charging spot network are analyzed. Also, we proposed and compared three power allocation strategies for centralized charging spot. The first strategy aims to maximize state of vehicles at plug-out time, the rest methods are equalized allocation and prioritized allocation based on vehicles SoC. The simulation results show that each run of the optimized algorithms can produce the satisfactory solutions to response properly the requirement from PHEV/EV customers.

  • Recently, protection coordination issues can occur due to increased fault current in power system when power system being changed radial power system to grid system such as loop power system, micro grid and smart grid. This paper analyzed Recloser-Fuse coordination in loop power distribution system with Superconducting Fault Current Limiters(SFCLs) when single line ground fault occur in loop power distribution system with SFCLs. We analyzed Recloser-Fuse Coordination in radial power distribution system and changed coordination caused by increased Fault current because of loop system when single line ground fault occur in power distribution system. This paper simulated to improve changed coordination using SFCLs in loop power distribution system. Power distribution system, SFCLs and protective devices are modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • Electronic watt hour meters(WHM) for high pressure running in domestic were installed to the digital type meter and ones for low pressure are expected to complete within several years. Domestic power metering technology is being beyond a simple framework with an electronic type and is rapidly evolving to intelligent smart metering systems in conjunction with promotion of a national smart grid project. Major policy outlook of the world's major power company regarding Intelligent metering is the application of the fare structure diversification and is the improvement of level of service to customers. In addition, electric power companies should focus on the cost reduction and the improvement of management efficiency through an efficient operation of distribution facility. In this paper, we are about to make an observation of the additional services technology development trend of the overseas smart meter and to have a view of value-added services(VAS) system of smart meter suitable for the domestic environment based on the technology development of VAS utilizing electronic watt hour meter performed by recent research projects.

  • In this paper, a power facility communication control device was designed to autonomously determine and separate the fault section through communication between power facilities in the smart grid distribution system. In the power facility communication control device, the control module was designed as a DSP to measure three-phase voltage and current, and the communication module was designed as an embedded-based Raspberry Pi to determine the fault section and realize the fault section separation through communication between power facilities. Communication between DSP and Raspberry Pi was designed by SPI communication, and communication between Raspberry Pi was designed based on Wi-Fi. Finally, a performance evaluation system based on three power facility communication control devices was built, and simulation verification was conducted for various fault events that may occur on the distribution line. As a result of the test evaluation, it was possible to confirm the effectiveness of the design methodology of the communication control device by showing the required response of the communication control device to all test cases.

  • In this paper, a communication methodology for the digital FRTU(: Feeder Remote Terminal Unit) required by the smart grid distribution system was studied. The digital FRTU consists of a fault handling unit and a communication unit. The fault handling unit transmits fault information to the communication unit in case of a failure, and the communication unit is designed to autonomously determine the fault section through two-way communication between surrounding digital FRTUs. For performance verification, a performance verification system consisting of 3 line sections based on 3 digital FRTUs was constructed to enable fault simulation for various failure scenarios. Various fault cases including one phase ground fault, line-to-line short-circuit fault, and three-phase short-circuit fault were experimentally simulated on the established performance verification system, and the validity of the developed methodology was confirmed by proving the accurate fault section inference results for each fault simulation case.

  • In this paper, a fault determination methodology based on an artificial neural network was proposed to protect the system from faults on the lines in the smart grid distribution system. In the proposed methodology, first, it was designed to determine whether there is a low impedance line fault (LIF) based on the magnitude of the current RMS value, and if it is determined to be a normal current, it was designed to determine whether a high impedance ground fault (HIF) is present using Normal/HIF classifier based on artificial neural network. Among repetitive DSP module-based algorithm verification tests, the normal/HIF classifier recognized the current waveform as normal and did not show reclosing operation for the cases of normal state current waveform simulation test where the RMS value was smaller than the minimum operating current value. On the other hand, for the cases of LIF where RMS value is greater than the minimum operating current value, the validity of the proposed methodology could be confirmed by immediately recognizing it as a fault state and showing reclosing operation according to the prescribed procedure.
