  • Present electric grids are advanced to integrate smart grids, distributed resources, high-speed sensing and control, and other advanced metering technologies. Cybersecurity is one of the challenges of the smart grid and nuclear plant digital system. It affects the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), for grid data communication and controls the information in real-time. The research article is emphasized solving the nuclear and smart grid hardware security issues with the integration of field programmable gate array (FPGA), and implementing the latest Time Authenticated Cryptographic Identity Transmission (TACIT) cryptographic algorithm in the chip. The cryptographic-based encryption and decryption approach can be used for a smart grid distribution system embedding with FPGA hardware. The chip design is carried in Xilinx ISE 14.7 and synthesized on Virtex-5 FPGA hardware. The state of the art of work is that the algorithm is implemented on FPGA hardware that provides the scalable design with different key sizes, and its integration enhances the grid hardware security and switching. It has been reported by similar state-of-the-art approaches, that the algorithm was limited in software, not implemented in a hardware chip. The main finding of the research work is that the design predicts the utilization of hardware parameters such as slices, LUTs, flip-flops, memory, input/output blocks, and timing information for Virtex-5 FPGA synthesis before the chip fabrication. The information is extracted for 8-bit to 128-bit key and grid data with initial parameters. TACIT security chip supports 400 MHz frequency for 128-bit key. The research work is an effort to provide the solution for the industries working towards embedded hardware security for the smart grid, power plants, and nuclear applications.

  • To solve the energy problem and finding new growth engines, interest for the smart grid is increasing and related technologies are making great efforts to secure in the world. AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) Among them is the first to be constructed and getting attention as a key component of smart grid. A fusion of various technologies in technology development and demonstration is underway on Jeju Island Smart Grid Demonstration Complex in Korea, and focusing on broadband power line communication technology infrastructure is actively underway in Korea Electric Power Corporation. AMI system using power line communication technology without building a separate communication lines are available for power supply lines, but communication is impossible in occurs because admission to the power company or the ideal infrastructure for communication is not considered. In this paper, we analyze the requirements to build AMI system using Binary CDMA and powerline communications technology, and design the basic communication protocol based on Binary CDMA, implement network management and relay feature. By doing so, ways to apply Ad-hoc Binary CDMA indigenous technology to the AMI system were derived, and could build a system to make use of Wired (PLC) and wireless (Binary CDMA) simultaneously.

  • With the growth of Smart Grid technologies, security and privacy will become the most important issues and more attention should be paid. There are some existing solutions about anonymization of smart meters, however, they still have some potential threats. In this paper, we describe an enhanced method to protect the privacy of consumer data. When metering data are required by a utility or the electrical energy distribution center for operational reasons, data are delivered not with the real IDs but with temporary IDs. In addition, these temporary IDs are changed randomly to prevent the attackers from analyzing the energy usage patterns. We also describe secure data transmission method for securing data delivered. In this way, we can enhance the privacy of Smart Grid System with low overhead.

  • In this paper, geographic information system(GIS) for an intelligent power distribution network was implemented with location informations acquired from automatic meter reading system, where the location informations of power line communication(PLC) modems installed at customer side were collected at data concentration units(DCUs) of headend equipment via PLC and then were transmitted to front end processor server. By displaying the connection status of the power distribution network on GIS map, operation of advanced metering infrastructure(AMI) or management of power grid system could be performed intuitionally and in real time, because the configuration state of the power grid could be easily monitored. The feasibility of the proposed system was confirmed with the especially constructed laboratory-level test bed and the verification test of the system will be carried out for a real power distribution network.

  • Recently, a lot of research for the smart grid technology have been carried out to achieve energy efficiency for the electronic products. In order to practically apply this study, smart instruments which are capable of the AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) and DR (Demand Response) function are necessary. However, it is difficult to apply the function of the smart grid to the electronic product that cannot support the smart grid. Accordingly, the efficient use of electric energy is impossible. In order to solve this problem, the electronic product has to be changed into the exclusive electronic product supporting smart grid technology or the smart controller has to be attached the outside of the device. In this study, we developed the smart controller for connecting the electric appliances to the smart grid system. It can be attached to the illumination and the smart grid-based lamp control system at home. We additionally designed the message frame and the protocol to operate the smart controller with the AMI based EMS (Energy Management Server). We developed an experimental system to practically verify functions of the smart controller which is attached to the lighting device. From the system, we showed that the electric source of the illumination can be controlled according to the load change and saved energy effectively. We also confirmed the structural benefit and the energy-efficient effect through the verification of the smart controller.

  • Recently, smart home environments which provide complex services through smart appliances are becoming realized, due to the advances in connected devices and network technologies. Current smart home environments are mostly restricted, because of difficultly of integration of heterogeneous smart appliances. Therefore radical service integration is impracticable. In this paper, we analyze and implement Machine-to-Machine (M2M) standards which are established by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for integrating heterogeneous devices and services. Smart Home is one of the areas covered by ETSI M2M standards, however these standards are just standardized, so adaption and assessment in smart home are not proved yet. Therefore, this paper analyze ETSI M2M standards by focusing the data transport model and evaluate by selecting the most commonly used smart home scenarios and by implementing ETSI M2M standards compatible smart metering system. In some points ETSI M2M standards are not efficient because of its complexity of structure, however ETSI M2M provides sophisticated features for integrating M2M which are appropriate to adopt diverse smart home environments.

  • The installation rate of AMI(: Advanced Metering Infrastructure) capable of automatic electricity measurement is less than 43% nationwide and 10.5% in rural areas, which is very poor. Therefore, for the smart grid, automatic information recording of the watt-hour meter is required. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop a system capable of remote meter reading and use control by improving the existing watt-hour meter. In this paper, in order to enable the AMI function of the existing electricity meter, the remote meter reading and control technology of the existing electricity meter for AMI, the core of the smart grid, was developed using IoT and AI. The main research content was to recognize numbers using Tensorflow and Open-cv to convert it into a power meter sensing device for SG. We confirmed and checked the performance using the protyope system.
