  • The purpose of the present study is to develop conceptual design of a railway vehicle simulator based on a scaled model. Although the scaled simulator is limited in its ability to manipulate the full dynamics of a full-size railway vehicle, it has been known to have an advantage in that it could provide means of testing the fundamental dynamic behavior within a limited laboratory space and at low operation cost. The present study proposes a design strategy for a simulator so that a small scaled roller rig could be fabricated and operated in laboratory setting based on the design philosophy. The data obtained from experimental testing using a scale model can be used to verify and interpret the dynamic performance of full-scale railway vehicle by applying appropriate non-dimensional analysis.

  • The elevator rope is easy to oscillate and continue vibrating because the rope structure is flexible and inner damping is small. The vibration of elevator rope is caused by the building vibration excited by external disturbances such as winds and earthquake. This paper is concerned with the experimental verification of the elevator rope vibrations using a small-scale simulator. The elevator rope vibration coupled with the building vibration was modelled using the energy method in the previous study. In this study, the natural frequencies of the elevator rope were computed using the theoretical model and compared to experimental results. Also, the time-responses of the rope vibration during the cage motion were measured by laser sensors and compared to the theoretical predictions. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

  • Small-scale reactors have recently attracted attention as a potential power generation source for the future. The Regional Energy Research Institute for Next Generation is currently developing a small-scale reactor called Regional Energy rX 10 MVA (REX-10). The current paper deals with a power system to be used with small-scale reactors for multi-purpose regional energy systems. This small nuclear system can supply electric and thermal energy like a co-generation system. The electrical model of the REX-10 has been developed as a part of the SCADA system. REX-10's dynamic and electromagnetic performance on the power system is analyzed. Simulations are carried out on a test system based on Ulleung Island's power system to validate REX-10 availability on a power system. RSCAD/RTDS and PSS/E software tools are used for the simulation.

  • The study is to develop a foundation design for a railway vehicle simulator using a scaled model. Although a scaled simulator is limited to manipulate the dynamics of a full-size railway vehicle, it has been known to have an advantage, since a scaled model could provide the fundamental dynamic behavior within a limited space of a laboratory facility and with a low operation cost while an experiment is conducted. This study is to propose a design strategy for a simulator so that a small scaled roller rig could be fabricated in a laboratory based on the design philosophy. The data obtained from the scale model is also experimentally investigated in conjunction with appropriate non-dimensional analysis so that the output results should be interpreted to the railway vehicle.

  • This paper investigates the performance of IEEE 802.11p wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) system in small-scale fading models reported by Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). We redesign the small-scale fading models to be applied to the computer simulation and develop the IEEE 802.11p WAVE physical layer simulator to provide the bit error rate and packet error rate performances. Moreover, a new channel estimator using decision directed channel estimation and linear minimum mean square error smoothing is proposed in order to improve the performance of the conventional least square channel estimator using two identical long training symbols. The simulation results are satisfactorily coincident with the scenarios of Georgia Tech report, and the proposed channel estimator significantly outperforms the conventional channel estimator.

  • The main steam line break accident is an essential initiating event of the pressurized water reactor. In present work, the fuzzy set theory and the signal-based fault detection method has been used to detect the occurrence and diagnosis of the location and break area for the small scale MSLB. The models are validated by the AP1000 accident simulator based on MAAP5. From the test results it can be seen that the proposed approach has a rapid and proper response on accident detection and location diagnosis. The method proposed to evaluate the break area shows good performances for small scale MSLB with the relative deviation within ±3%.

  • This paper introduce the real time digital simulator which is located in Korea Electric Power Research Institute. This paper also describes the methodology for the performance test of the PSS using KEPS. This test is to get a high degree of the confidence of the developed PSS before it is installed into the real power system. This has been performed in the form of closed-loop tests in which Simulator and PSS are connected and signals come and back interactively. Many tests have successfully done using KEPS which consists of 26 RTDS racks, under the large-scale power system. The simulated reduced KEPCO power system contains 88 generators and 295 buses. Through the AVR step, three phase fault and active power variation test, the effectiveness of developed PSS has been proved. This paper also presents the overview of KEPS and hardware of protype PSS.

  • This study proposes a new approach to implimentation of robust control and torque control response analysis based on monitoring simulator for smart factory. According to the physical properties of a flexible manipulator, a two time-scale approach, namely, singular perturbation ap proach, is further utilized for thorough analysis and general controller design. It is shown that asymptotic motional tracking can be effectively achieved, whereas the force regulation errors can be made arbitrarily small. For demonstration of the proposed technology performance, experiments of a eight joint flexible manipulator are performed for the proposed control method, and the reliability of proposed control results are illustrated based on monitoring simulator.
