  • Cervicofacial subcutaneous emphysema is a rare complication mainly resulting from dental procedures. The majority of cases are self-limiting and benign in clinical nature. However, although entry sites may be quite small and superficial, it can result in potential respiratory difficulties, such as pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum. We present the first case in which facial subcutaneous emphysema developed in a 6-year-old boy following use of a fish cake skewer while eating.

  • The goal of this study is to develop a biomarker used in monitoring abnormal behaviors of Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) as a model organism caused by hazardous chemicals. Japanese medaka was treated under appropriate sublethal concentrations of copper and the fish were subjected to copper treatment after starvation for 48 hr. The untreated individuals showed common behavioral characteristics (i.e., smooth and linear movements with small curvatures) in the movement behaviors.

  • A technology of ultrasonic biotelemetry for tracking fish behavior is investigated. The ultrasonic biotelemetry system is constituted by a transmitter and a receiving system. Because a pinger was mainly used for the transmitter, the capability for pinger to possess was investigated and the efficient usage for pinger was examined. A source pressure level and a frequency were synthetically examined so that pinger could realize small size, a light weight, and a long life time. The receiving system is divided roughly into directional hydrophone systems and acoustic positioning systems by the receiving method. The directional hydrophone system is divided into single beam and multiple beam with the number of hydrophone, and the acoustic positioning systems is divided into LBL (Long Base Line), SBL (Short Base Line), and SSBL (Super Short Base Line) on the basis of base line. The present situation, the merits and demerits, and the principle of each receiving method were investigated in detail, and the efficient usage for each receiving method were examined.

  • Pampus echinogaster was a carnivore and its major food items were crustaceans, hydromedusae, salps, Sagitta, and fish. Larvae and small juveniles preyed heavily on copepods. However, the portion of the diet attributable to copepods was decreased with increasing size, and this decrease was paralleled by an increased consumption of hydromedusae, salps, Sagitta, and fish.

  • We studied the feeding habits of Sebastes thompsoni based on 421 specimens obtained in monthly collections between January and December 2005 in the coastal waters off Busan, Korea. S. thompsoni was a crustacean feeder, and consumed mainly shrimp and euphausiids. Its diet also included small quantities of amphipods, cephalopods, and fish. It showed distinct ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Smaller individuals (14-17 cm standard length (SL)), mainly consumed euphausiids. The portion of these prey items decreased with increasing fish size, and larger individuals (>20 cm SL) consumed mainly shrimp such as Leptochela sydniensis.

  • Red scabream, Pagrus major , is a valuable aquaculture species in Korea , but spontaneous eye abnormality occurred in cultured individuals . The incidence of eye abnormality was 4% in the group of cultured red scebream. The abnormality was characterized by unilateral and bilateral exophthalmos, opacity and lens pathology. Lense prolapse was found in two cases. Lenses in diseased fishes was considerably small in diameter and eyes were deformed as a whole. In the group of induced hybrid red scabream Pagrus major (♀) x black seabrearn Acanthopagrus schlegeli (♂), the incidence of eye abnormality wa~ the same 4%, but only opacity was registered. Opacity was also found in two of sixteen examined Wild-caught red seabrcam. Histopathological changes of lenses in cultured red seabreem included vecuolated cytoplasm of lens fibers, necrosis of fibers in central part of lens, folding and increase in thickness of lens capsule, and epithelial proliferation beneath the anterior lens capsule. In affected eyes no parasites or gas bubbles were found.

  • In mammals light input resets the central clock of the suprachiasmatic nucleus by inducing secretion of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) from retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). We previously showed that thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1), a homeodomain-containing transcription factor, specifically regulates PACAP gene expression in the rat hypothalamus. In the present study we examined the expression of TTF-1 in PACAP-synthesizing retinal cells. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) showed that it is abundantly expressed in RGCs of the superior region of the retina, but in only a small subset of RGCs in the inferior region. Double FISH experiments revealed that TTF-1 is exclusively expressed in PACAP-producing RGCs. These results suggest that TTF-1 plays a regulatory role in PACAP-expressing retinal ganglion cells.

  • Feeding habits of Acentrogobius pellidebilis collected from in an eelgrass(Zostera marina) bed from January to December 2006 were studied. A. pellidebilis ranged form 1.6 to 6.9 cm in standard length were determined. A. pellidebilis was a carnivore which consumed mainly copepods, polychaetes, and amphipods. Its diets included small quantities of isopods, seaweeds, nematods, and gastropods. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Smaller individuals (<2.0cm SL) fed mainly on copepods. While the consumption of copepods decreased with increasing fish size, the consumption of polychaetes and amphipods were increased. Dietary breadth index was varied with fish size.

  • The definitive identification of ciliate species by morphological characteristics relies on time-consuming and laborious staining techniques. Therefore, in this study, we discriminated 3 scuticociliatosis causing species - Pseudocohnilembus persalinus, Uronema marinum and Philasterides dicentrarchi - in cultured olive flounder by multiplex PCR. The multiplex PCR based on the species-specific amplification of small subunit ribosomal RNA (SS rRNA) gene sequence enabled us to distinguish the 3 scuticociliate species in a simple and rapid manner, even in the sample containing the three species simultaneously. These data suggest that the multiplex PCR strategy would make it possible to avoid the cumbersome and time-consuming procedures of morphological analysis for the definitive identification of scuticociliates.

  • The fish behavior survey in the main-net of a large scale-net was carried out in relation to the catching function of the set-net. at Kishihata set-net in Japan during the period from January 29th to February 22th 1992. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The greatest number of schools observation in the main-net occurred between 17 : 00hrs and 18 : 00hrs. after which the schools suddenly disappeared. This result show that the schools did not stay in the main-net. but immediately moved through into the bag-net or left the main-net. 2. The course of movement of the small schools of sardine in the main-net was in a straight line to the slope-net. However. upon arrived at the slope-net the school turned around. away from the slope-net and went directly towards the playground. 3. The majority of small schools of sardine in the main-net were estimated to move with the mode velocity 25cm/sec. however the maximum velocity were recorded 80cm/sec.
