Brittle materials are very weak for impact because of typical characteristics which happen to be easily fractured with low fracture toughness and crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact due to small spheres, high contact pressure is occurred to impact surface and then local damage on specimen is developed, since there are little plastic deformations due to contact pressure compared to metals. This local damage is a dangerous factor which gives rise to final fracture of structures. In this research, the crack propagation process of soda lime glass by impact of small sphere is explained and the effects of the constraint conditions of impact spheres and materials for the material damage were studied by using soda-lime glass. that is the effects for the materials and sizes of impact ball, thickness of specimen and residual strength. Especially, this research has focused on the damage behavior of ring crack, cone crack and several kinds of cracks.
The recent progress in multimedia signal processing and transmission technologies has contributed to the extensive use of multimedia devices to watch sports games with small LCD panel. However, the most of video sequences are captured for normal viewing on standard TV or HDTV, for cost reasons, merely resized and delivered without additional editing. This may give the small-display-viewers uncomfortable experiences in understanding what is happening in a scene. For instance, in a soccer video sequence taken by a long-shot camera techniques, the tiny objects (e.g., soccer ball and players) may not be clearly viewed on the small LCD panel. Moreover, it is also difficult to recognize the contents of the scorebox which contains the elapsed time and scores. This renuires intelligent display technique to provide small-display-viewers with better experience. To this end, one of the key technologies is to determine region of interest (ROI) and display the magnified ROI on the screen, where ROI is a part of the scene that viewers pay more attention to than other regions. Examples include a region surrounding a ball in long-shot and a scorebox located in the comer of each frame. In this paper, we propose a scheme for raising viewing experiences of multimedia mobile device users. Instead of taking generic approaches utilizing visually salient features for extraction of ROI in a scene, we take domain-specific approach to exploit unique attributes of the soccer video. The proposed scheme consists of two modules: ROI determination and scorebox extraction. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme offers useful tools for intelligent video display on multimedia mobile devices.

It is very important to verify generated setup errors in cancer therapy by using a high energy radiation and to perform the precise radiation therapy. Specially, the verification of treatment position is very crucial in special therapies like fractionated stereotatic radiotherapy (FSRT). The FSRT uses normally high-dose, small field size for treating small intracranial lesions. To estimate the developed FSRT system, the isocenter accuracy of gantry, couch and collimator were performed and a total of inaccuracy was less than ${\pm}1mm$. Precise beam targeting is crucial when using high-dose, small field size FSRT for treating small intracranial lesions. The EPID image of the 3mm lead ball mounted on the isocenter with a 25mm collimator cone was acquired and detected to the extent of one pixel (0.76mm) after comparing the difference between the center of a 25mm collimator cone and a 3 mm ball after processing the EPID image. The powder core, conventionally fabricated from iron particles coated with insulator, showed large eddy current loss under high frequency, because of small specific resistance. To overcome the eddy current loss, the increase in the specific resistance of powder cores was needed. In this study, copper oxide coating onto electrically conductive iron particles was performed using a planetary ball mill to increase the specific resistance. Coating factors were optimized by the Response surface methodology. The independent variables were the CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, coating time, ball size, ball mass and sample mass. The response variable was the specific resistance. The optimization of six factors by the fractional factorial design indicated that CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, and coating time were the key factors. The levels of these three factors were selected by the three-factors full factorial design and steepest ascent method. The steepest ascent method was used to approach the optimum range for maximum specific resistance. The Box-Behnken design was finally used to analyze the response surfaces of the screened factors for further optimization. The results of the Box-Behnken design showed that the CuO mass fraction and mill revolution number were the main factors affecting the efficiency of coating process. As the CuO mass fraction increased, the specific resistance increased. In contrast, the specific resistance increased with decreasing mill revolution number. The process optimization results revealed a high agreement between the experimental and the predicted data ($Adj-R^2=0.944$). The optimized CuO mass fraction, mill revolution number, and coating time were 0.4, 200 rpm, and 15 min, respectively. The measured value of the specific resistance of the coated pellet under the optimized conditions of the maximum specific resistance was $530k{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$.

The Geyoungju Ca-bentonite with dry density of 1.6 g/$cm^3$ has been considered as a standard buffer material for the disposal of high level waste in KAERI disposal system design. But it had relatively lower thermal conductivity compared with other surrounding materials, that was one of key parameters to limit the increase of the disposal density in the disposal system. In this study, various additives were selected and mixed with the Ca-bentonite in different mixing methods in order to increase the thermal conductivity from 0.8 W/mK to 1.0 W/mK. As an additive, CNT (Cabon Nano Tube), graphite, alumina, CuO, and $Fe_2O_3$ were selected, which are chemically stable and have good thermal conductivity. As mixing methods, dry hand-mixer mixing, wet milling and dry ball mill mixing were applied for the mixing. Above all, the ball mill mixing was proved to be most effective since the produced mixture was most homogeneous and showed higher increase in the thermal conductivity. From this study, it was confirmed that the thermal conductivity for the Geyoungju Ca-bentonite could be improved by adding small amount of highly thermal conductive material to 1.0 W/mk. In conclusion, it was believed that the experimental results will be valuable in the disposal system design if the additive effects on the swelling and permeability on the compact bentonite are also approved in further studies.
In the fabrication process of Fe-based amorphous alloy powder cores by pulverization of the melt-spun ribbons and cold compaction, the effects of powder preparation method on the magnetic & electric properties, powder shapes and microstructure of cores have been investigated. The powder cores made by using rotor mill showed low effective permeability as compared to the cores prepared by ball milling. However the frequency dependence and quality factor properties were superior in the case of rotor-milling. Further the powders prepared by rotor mill had homogeneous and round shapes through strong shearing in the sieve ring, while the ball milled powders were inhomogeneous and relatively small. The lower permeability of the powder cores fabricated with rotor mill was considered to be due to the high internal stress occurred by very intensive shearing. Moreover the powder cores produced by rotor-milling showed lower core loss and good frequency dependence of effective permeability possibly due to the higher electrical insulation between magnetic particles. The dc bias property of the powder cores made by rotor-milling was better than the one by ball-milling.
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was crosslinked in the melt state to enhance wear resistance, Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and triallyl cyanurate (TAC) was used as a crosslinking agent and a promoter, respectively. With increasing amount of DCP and TAC used, gel content of crosslinked UHMWPE (XUMPE) increased, while the melting temperature, crystallizaiton temperature, crystallinity, and tensile properties decreased. The results of pin-on-disk wear test and ball-on-disk test with small applied load showed reduced wear volumes of XUMPE from that of the unmodified UHMWPE. As the wear mechanism effected in the experimental condition of this study was thought to be deformation rather than adhesion or fatigue, a new parameter, the ratio of maximum contact stress to yield stress, was proposed to correlate well with observed wear resistance. In ball-on-disk wear test with larger applied load, XUMPE showed higher wear volumes than that of the unmodified UHMWPE which were accompanied with increased friction coefficients and surface roughness of the wear tracks. When contact stress was well above yield stress, the failure of XUMPE, as well as deformation, was thought to be much accelerated.
In this study, a new check valve was studied to improve the load pressure of a brake system with a small piezoelectric-hydraulic pump. During the pressurization process, the steady-state pressure at the load is affected by the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the check valve the chamber pressure and load pressure. Since the flow path cover of the check valve is made wider than the cross-sectional area of the output flow to prevent backflow, a method of reducing the area ratio is proposed for a higher load pressure by mounting an additional mass to a thin plate spring type check valve. To identify the effect of mounting an additional mass to the existing check valve on the load pressure, a simple brake system with a small piezoelectric-hydraulic pump was modeled using a commercial code AMESim. The AMESim modeling was verified by comparing the simulation results with the experimental results of the pump the existing check valve. The additional mass was added to the verified AMESim modeling and higher load pressure was able to be obtained through simulation. The 35% performance improvement in load pressure identified by carrying out pressurization test of the brake system after adopting the new check valve the small piezoelectric-hydraulic pump.
To know the proper setup posture for the various clubs, changes of setup variables according to the change of golf club length was investigated. Swing motions of three male low handicappers including a professional were taken using two high-speed videocameras. Four clubs iron 7, iron 5, iron 3 and driver (wood 1) were selected for this experiment. Three dimensional motion analysis techniques were used to get the kinematical variables. Mathcad and Kwon3D motion analysis program were used to analyze the position, distance and angle data in three dimensions. The variables divided into three categories 1) position and width of anterior-posterior direction 2) position and width of lateral direction 3) angles and evaluated based on the theories of many good golf teachers. Major findings of this study were as follows. 1.The stance (distance between ankle joints) was increased as the length of the club increased but the increasing width was not large. It ranges from 5cm to 10cm and professional player showed small changes. 2. Forward lean angle of trunk was decreased (more erected) as the length of the club increased. It ranges from 30 degrees for iron7 to 25 degrees for driver. 3. Angle between horizontal and right shoulder were increased as the length of the club increased. It ranges from 10 degrees to 20 degrees and professional player showed small changes. 4. Anterior-posterior position of the shoulders were located in front of the foot for all clubs and the difference between the shoulder and knee position was decreased as the length of the club increased. 5. Anterior-posterior position of grip (hand) was located almost beneath the shoulders (2.5cm front) for iron7, but it increased to 10cm for the driver. This grip adjustment makes the height of the posture increased only 5cm from iron7 to driver. 6. Lateral position of grip located at 5cm left for the face of iron7, but it located at the right side (behind) for the face of driver. 7. Lateral position of the ball located at the 40%(15cm) of stance from left ankle for iron7 and located at the 10% (5cm) of stance for driver. 8. Head always located at the right side of the stance and the midpoint of the eyes located at the 37% of stance from the right ankle for all clubs. This means that the axis of swing always maintained consistently for all clubs. 9. Left foot opened to the target for all subject and clubs. The maximum open angle was 25 degrees. Overall result shows that the changes of the setup variables vary only small ranges from iron7 to driver. Paradoxically it could be concluded that the failure of swing result from the excessive changes of setup not from the incorrect changes. These findings will be useful for evaluating the setup motion of golf swing and helpful to most golfers.

In the last 50 years, lead-contained solder materials have been the most popular interconnect materials used in the electronics industry. Recently, lead-free solders are about to replace lead-contained solders for preventing environmental pollutions. However, the reliability of lead-free solders is not yet satisfactory. Several researchers reported that lead-contained solders have a good fatigue property. The others published that the lead-free solders have a longer thermal fatigue life. In this paper, the reason for the contradictory results published on the estimation of fatigue life of lead-free solder is investigated. In the present study, fatigue behavior of 63Sn37Pb, and two types of lead-free solder joints were compared using pseudo-power cycling testing method, which provides more realistic load cycling than chamber cycling method does. Pseudo-power cycling test was performed in various temperature ranges to evaluating the shear strain effect. A nonlinear finite element model was used to simulate the thermally induced visco-plastic deformation of solder ball joint in BGA packages. It was found that lead-free solder joints have a good fatigue property in the small temperature range condition. That condition induce small strain amplitude. However in the large temperature range condition, lead-contained solder joints have a longer fatigue life.
